بدأ الكاتب بالحديث عن سلسلة من المقدمات لأعماله الكاملة، تحدث فيها حول ظروف كتابة تلك الأعمال وتكونها في ذهنه وهو حين يسردها فهي تشكل في النهاية أيضاً نوعاً من الحياة وأضاف إليها مقالات كان قد كتبها في مناسبات مختلفة عن لمحات من حياته وعن بعض الأماكن المضطربة في العالم والذى وجد نفسه في داخلها بلا مبرر قوى وهكذا يرى الكاتب أن رحلاته ككتاباته كانت طرقاً للهروب، حيث كان يعتبر أن الكتابه شكلا من العلاج النفسي ويتساءل احياناً كيف يمكن لأولئك الذين لا يبدعون أدبا أو رسما أو موسيقى أن يهربوا من الجنون والكآبة والذعر المتأصل والملازم للوضع الإنساني.
