يقدم هذا الكتاب ترجمة شبه دقيقة لأجزاء ثلاثة صدرت عن دار كولهامر في ألمانيا الغربية، بإشراف كلوس كريزر وفارنر ديم وهانس جورج ماير، وبمشاركة عدد كبير من الاساتذة والمستشرقين وفي الاختصاصات المتعددة. والكتاب صدر في أواسط السبعينات مما قد يجعله، ولكننا حاولنا قدر الامكان سد بعض الثغرات في مواضيع بسيطة، كالاحصاءات مثلا قديما للدقة وبهدف متابعة آخر المستجدات في هذه لميادين هذا مع العلم أن الهدف من توخيا الموضوعات ليس إعطاء معلومات معاصرة بقدر ما هو تاريخي، أي التركيز على المتغيرات التاريخية أوالجغرافية عبر الحقبة الاسلامية اممتدة منذ بدء الدعوة والمستمرة في أكثر من موضع وموقع ومجال وحتى يومنا هذا.
