عمل فردي تفانى فيه القاضي الأكوع بجمع 6217 مثل شعبي يمني، مع شرح الغامض منها. لأمثال اليمن أهمية خاصة من خصوصية لهجاتها المعزولة نسبيا والأمثال تحديدا لها قدرة على البقاء أكثر من غيرها بسبب تركيبها وأحيانا سجعها ويلاحظ القارئ أن بعض الأمثال تثير الشك في كونها بقايا تصورات دينية أو ميثولوجية قديمة وقد لاحظ القاضي ذلك وقال بنفسه : والذي لا شك فيه ولا مراء أن بعضا من هذه الأمثال قديم وربما يرجع تاريخه إلى عصر ما قبل الإسلام لذلك فالكتاب تتعدى أهميته المنشغلين في آداب العربية إلى دارسي الآثار والنقوش والأنثروبولوجي وذكر القاضي أن المستشرقين كانوا أكثر من طالب به.
