يشتمل هذا الكتاب على دراسة حالة للهند بتقديم قراءة نقدية لدور الدين في بناء الدولة بالهند وتناقش الدراسة بوجه خاص كيف أن التصور الهندي للعلمانية ويستند إلى عدد من الموروثات الدينية التي تتجلى في المفهوم الغاندي لما يشكل الجماعات الدينية والسياسية وانطلاقا من تلك الصورة العامة تستطلع الدراسة كيفية استخدام القوميين الهندوس مثل هذه الموروثات في فرض ممارساتهم الإقصائية عبر تأسيس هياكل مسيطرة تتألف من الحدود الدينية الفاصلة والممارسات الدينية الصارمة بهدف إبقاء الحركات المناهضة داخل حظيرة الهندوسية.
