هذا الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة من الدراسات كتبها المؤلف فيما بين 1962 و1969 وقد نشر بعضها في مصر عن طريق المعهد الفرنسي للآثار الشرقية بالمنيرة ونشر بعضها خارج مصر وقد اختار المؤلف الطريق الصعب لإنجاز دراسته تلك فرجع إلى المصادر الرئيسية لتاريخ مصر العثمانية وعانى الكثير في التوفيق بين المعلومات المتباينة والترجيح بين التواريخ والوقائع المتضاربة كما نقب عنه في مظانه الحقيقية في الوثائق المتناثرة والمكدسة بلا تنظيم ولا ترتيب والمبعثرة.
