هذا الكتاب لأبي منصور الثعالبي من الكتب التي اتسمت بجمال التأليف وتنسيق الأبواب، مع شرف الغاية وكرم المقصد، بناء على ذكر أشياء مضافة ومنسوبة إلى أشياء مختلفة يتمثل بها ويكثر في النظم والنثر وعلي ألسنة الخاصة والعامة استعمالها. كقولهم : غراب نوح، ونار إبراهيم وذئب يوسف وغير ذلك وقد خرجها المؤلف من واحد وستين بابا ينطق كل منها بذكر ما يشتمل عليه أولا ويفصح عن الاستشهاد وسياقة المواد آخرا وما فيها إلا ما يتعلق من المثل بسبب ويوفي من اللغة والشعر على طرف ويضرب في التشبيهات والاستعارات بسهم ويأخذ من الأخبار والأنساب بقسم ويجيل من خصائص البلدان والأماكن قدحا ويجري من أعاجيب الأحاديث شوطا.
