يتتبع هذا الكتاب تاريخ الوجود اليهودي في مصر ويدرس الكثير مما يتعلق بالحياة الخاصة باليهود في مصر على المستوى الاجتماعي والديني والثقافي والاقتصادي والسياسي فيذكر بداية أن اليهود الذين عاشوا في مصر لم يكونوا مصريين وإنما كانوا جالية مختلفة عن المصريين في ديانتها وعاداتها وتقاليدها استطونت في مصر على مر العصور عن طريق الهجرات المتلاحقة فسكنت في ثلاث مدن رئيسية هي الإسكندرية والفسطاط والقاهرة وعاشت في حارات خاصة بها وتشبه الجيتو في أوروبا وكانت الحارة اليهودية تضم بين جوانبها أماكن معيشتهم فضلا عن أماكن إقامة شعائرهم ومن هنا فإن مجرد ذكر أسم معبد يهودي أو كنيسة خاصة باليهود تعنى أنها تقع في حارة خاصة باليهود.
