هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن سوالف ومرويات شفهية بدأ المؤلف بتسجيلها منذ عام 1982 واستمر عدة سنوات، إذ استطاع أن يجمع مادة غزيرة وصلت إلى مئات الساعات وبلغت آلاف الصفحات لقد تطرق الباحث في كتابه، أيام العرب الأواخر، إلى قبائل لم يسبق أن تطرق إليها أحد قبله، وخصوصا ما يتعلق ببعض قبائل الشمال وهكذا تضافرت الوسائل والجهود، وتواجد الإخباريون الأكفاء الذين لم يترددوا في الإدلاء بما لديهم من سوالف وقصائد ومعلومات، انطوت عليها صفحات كتابنا هذا، بكل ما فيها من توالي الأجيال وحقب التاريخ والتغيرات الثقافية والاجتماعية واللغوية.
