تناقش هذه الدراسة اعتقاد الغربيين بأن المجتمعات الإسلامية ذات نظرة متخلفة وتعاني القمع بسبب الدين كما أنها تحكم بصورة غير إنسانية وذلك عندما يقارنونها مع ديموقراطيتهم العلمانية المستنيرة غير أن قياس الفجوة الثقافية بين الغرب والإسلام عملية معقدة وهي أضيق مما يعتقدون فالإسلام ليس مجرد ديانة كما أنه بالتأكيد ليس مجرد حركة سياسية أصولية إنه حضارة وأسلوب حياة يختلف من دولة إسلامية إلى أخرى إلا أنه ينشط ويحيا بروح مشتركة أكثر إنسانية مما يعتقد معظم الغربيين.
