هذا الكتاب يحاول سد الفجوة بين المعرفة التي تتوافر للشخص الشغوف بمراقبة سلوك الحيوانات دون حكم مسبق أو تحيز، والعقلية العلمية التي تأبى أن تغامر بالدخول في تلك المنطقة الانفعالية ويتحدث المؤلف ويقول في هذا الكتاب محاولة لأن أبين أن الحيوانات من جميع الأنواع تحيا حياة إنفعالية معقدة إذ بالرغم من أن كثيرا من العلماء يؤمنون بأن الحيوانات التي لاحظوها لديها عواطف إلا إن القليل منهم هم الذين كتبوا في هذا الموضوع ولهذا السبب قمت أنا وشريكتي في تأليف هذا الكتاب بتنقية قدر ضخم من الكتابات العلمية بحثا عن الدليل غير المعترف به.
