يسعى هذا الكتاب لتفهم الأصول الثقافية، الحضارية لظاهرة دولية بدأت حوالي 1800م في شمال وغرب أوروبا (الصناعة والمناجم والمواصلات) فمع إقرار المزيد من المؤرخين بالأهمية المركزية للعلم والتكنولوجيا في تشكّل الثورة الصناعية الأولى، برزت الحاجة إلى تاريخ عام وجيد لإنجازات الثورة العلمية، وكتاب \"الثقافة العلمية وتشكل الغرب الصناعي، يفسر هذه العملية التاريخية بالنظر إلى كيف ولماذا أصبحت المعرفة العلمية هذا الجزء المكمل من التراث الحضاري في أوروبا، وبسعيه لفهم الأصول الثقافية للثورة الصناعية للقرن الثامن عشر.
