Mineral wealth paradox: health challenges and environmental risks in African resource-rich areas
Background Africa is blessed with vast arable land and enriched with valuable natural resources encompassing both renewable (like water, forests, and fisheries) and non-renewable (such as minerals, coal, gas, and oil). Under the right conditions, a natural resource boom should serve as an important driver for growth, development, and the transition from cottage industry to factory output. However, despite its wealth, Africa is often associated with the notion of a resource curse. Negative outcomes are often linked with mineral wealth. This paper investigates the causes of adverse health outcomes in resource-rich regions. The study provides empirical support for the natural resource curse with particular emphasis on the environmental health risks in Africa. We explore the multifaceted connections among mineral deposits, environmental risks, conflict events and population dynamics, shedding light on the complexities of resource-rich areas. Results We amalgamate georeferenced data pertaining to 22 specific mineral deposits with information on the prevalence of reliance on compromised infrastructures at a spatial resolution of 0.5 ∘ × 0 . 5 ∘ for all of Africa between 2000 and 2017. Through comprehensive econometric analysis of environmental health risk factors, including reliance on contaminated water sources, open defecation, unimproved sanitation, particulate matter concentration, and carbon concentration, we uncover the intricate pathways through which mineral deposits impact public health. Our findings revealed the significant role of in-migration in mediating environmental health risks. Moreover, we found that the activities of extractive companies amplify certain environmental risks including reliance on unimproved sanitation and practices and particulate matter concentration. Conflict events emerge as a key mediator across all environmental health risks, underlining the far-reaching consequences of instability and violence on both local communities and the environment. Conclusion The study contributes to the discourse on sustainable development by unraveling the nuanced associations between mineral wealth and health challenges. By drawing attention to the intricate web of factors at play, we provide a foundation for targeted interventions that address the unique environmental and health challenges faced by mineral-rich communities.
Influence of Green Human Resource Management on firm’s environmental performance: Green Employee Empowerment as a mediating factor
This research aimed to investigate the mediating function of Green Employee Empowerment (GEE) in the relationship between Green Human Resource Management practices (GHRM) and the environmental performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana, drawing on the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) theory. This study assessed the hypotheses in the established research model using structural equation modeling based on data collected from 320 participants from small and medium-sized firms in Ghana. The study’s results revealed that GHRM practices were significantly correlated with the firm’s environmental performance. The study found significant GHRM’s indirect consequences on environmental performance through GEE in all models examined. These findings suggest that GEE plays a crucial role in translating the impact of GHRM practices into improved environmental performance. The study overlooked other potential mediators or moderators in the relationship between GHRM practices and environmental performance, focusing on GEE. To better understand the complex dynamics behind GHRM techniques’ environmental performance, future research might examine business culture, leadership style, and employee sustainability attitudes.
Examining the impact of social media usage on start-ups performance: Mediating role of brand image
Social media has emerged as an assertive communication and brand-building tool in the dynamic entrepreneurship landscape. This study explores the influence of social media usage on the performance of start-ups, focusing on the mediating role of brand image. The research employs a quantitative approach, collecting data from 450 start-ups in Ghana through surveys. Data collected was processed and analyzed through PLS-SEM. The findings of the study supported all the formulated hypotheses. The outcome suggests that, social media, brand image and innovation capabilities all have direct and positive linked with startup performance. Additionally, the findings proved a mediating role of brand image between social media usage and startup performance. Understanding the dynamics between social media, brand image, and performance is vital for start-ups seeking to thrive in competitive markets. Based on the outcomes in the findings, the study recommends social media marketing tool for startup businesses in Ghana to stern competition and drive sustenance. This research contributes to academic literature and practical insights, offering nuanced perspectives on leveraging social media as a strategic tool for cultivating a brand image and influencing overall start-up performance. The implications of the study findings serve as guideline for startups and young entrepreneurs’ in developing countries as they develop their marketing strategies.
Assessment of the Knowledge of Chronic Kidney Disease and Anemia Among University Students in Ghana: A Cross‐Sectional Study
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is typically associated with anemia, with both implicated in global mortalities and morbidities. Adequate knowledge about these conditions might help individuals to prevent and/or manage them effectively. This study was aimed at assessing the knowledge of CKD and anemia regarding their causes, risk factors, and preventive practices among undergraduate students. Methods: The study was a cross‐sectional design conducted from July 2023 to September 2023, involving 267 students pursuing either health‐related or nonhealth‐related programs. A structured questionnaire was administered to participants to assess their knowledge of CKD and anemia and was analyzed. Results: An overwhelming majority, 208 (77.9%), demonstrated a good level of general knowledge of CKD, whereas an even higher proportion, 215 (80.5%), had a good level of general knowledge of anemia. Also, the bulk of the participants, 222 (83.1%), showed a good level of knowledge of the relationship between CKD and anemia. There was a significant relationship between a student’s faculty and general CKD knowledge ( p < 0.001). Participants in health‐related faculties and in the third/fourth year significantly had good knowledge of CKD than those in nonhealth‐related faculties and in the first/second year of studies. With regards to anemia, individuals aged 20 years and beyond had good knowledge of anemia than teenage students. There was also a significant relationship between a student’s faculty and general knowledge of anemia ( p < 0.001), such that participants in health‐related faculties were about 99% less likely to have poor knowledge of anemia than those in nonhealth‐related faculties [AOR = 0.01 (0.00, 0.007)]. Conclusion: Students with good knowledge of CKD, anemia, and/or their interrelationships were the majority. However, students in health‐related faculties significantly had good knowledge of both CKD and anemia than their counterparts in nonhealth‐related faculties. Health‐related courses that would enlighten students in nonhealth‐related faculties should be promoted.
The Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme study area in Ghana: results of a household survey prior to the introduction of the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine
Background In 2019, the RTS,S/AS01 E malaria vaccine (RTS,S) was introduced into Ghana’s routine health system as part of the Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP). Household surveys were conducted prior to vaccine introduction and approximately 18 and 30 months post-introduction. We present a description of the area in Ghana based on the baseline household survey including malaria prevalence, malnutrition, wealth, insecticide-treated net (ITN) coverage, other health interventions (deworming, Vitamin A supplementation (VAS)), coverage of Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) vaccines, and health-seeking behaviour for febrile children. Methods The baseline household survey was conducted between 25 February and 18 March 2019 in a representative sample of 6778 households across 66 districts (33 in each of the implementing and comparator areas) in Ghana. Caregivers of children aged 5–48 months were interviewed. For each child, vaccination details were transcribed from the maternal and child health record book, and we measured the mid-upper arm circumference and obtained a malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT). Survey-weighted coverage estimates were obtained using standard survey methods. Survey Poisson regression was used to estimate prevalence ratios. Results Overall, 7768 children were included in the study, and 21% (95% CI 18–23) tested positive for malaria parasitemia by RDT. About 87%, 95%CI (85–89) of all households owned at least one ITN, and 62%, 95%CI (59–64) of children aged 5–48 months slept under an insecticide-treated net (ITN) the night before the survey. Additionally, 22%, 95%CI (21–24) of children reported having fever in the two weeks preceding the survey; among those with reported fever, 72%, 95%CI (69–74) sought advice or treatment, 40%, 95%CI (37–44) were tested for malaria, and 42%, 95%CI (39–46) of those with fever took an antimalarial drug. Additionally, 17%, 95%CI (16–19) had a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) ≤ 13.5 cm, and 1%, 95%CI (0–1) had a (MUAC) ≤ 11.5 cm. The uptake of vitamin A VAS in the 6 months prior to the survey was 36%, based on routine delivery through EPI, and deworming coverage was 29%. Coverage of EPI vaccines was > 90%. Indicators in comparison and implementation areas were comparable. Conclusions The pilot implementation and evaluation of the RTS,S malaria vaccine in Ghana was conducted in an area with substantial malaria transmission and illness, modest health-seeking behaviour and ITN use, and good EPI vaccine coverage. This study has established the baseline comparability between implementation and comparator areas, which serves as the foundation for future feasibility assessments.
Impacts of climate hazards on coastal livelihoods in Ghana: the case of Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra region
Global climate has undergone unprecedented changes due to several natural- and human-induced factors. The present study sought to assess the impacts of climate hazards on coastal livelihoods, specifically in Ningo-Prampram district in the Greater Accra region, Ghana. The research uses participatory rural appraisal (PRA) and the analytic hierarchical process (AHP) tools to ascertain the major climatic and non-climatic events, along with their impacts. Findings revealed coastal inundation and submersion were the major stressors that triggered dysfunctions of residents’ livelihoods. Impacts from these stressors constituted decline in household income, collapse of buildings along the beach, and saltwater intrusion rendering farmlands unproductive causing reduced crop yield. Cabbage and chilli farms that are no longer arable have been sold to estate developers. Sea level rise has resulted in the submersion of coastal lands (1 km–2 km land residual inland). Residents undertake temporal evacuations with financial assistance from local financial institutions. Minor interventions like the growing of mangroves and coconut trees have been initiated to somewhat serve as defence mechanisms. However, residents have continuously harvested these plants along the coast with no plans for afforestation, re-afforestation and other sea defence mechanisms. This leaves the area highly vulnerable, hence, the present study attempted to bridge this paucity of knowledge to inform the decision of relevant stakeholders in prioritizing climate-related issues that affect livelihoods in the area.
Validating local drivers influencing land use cover change in Southwestern Ghana: a mixed-method approach
Addressing undesirable changes associated with the driving forces of land use cover change are critical to sustainable land management, and the future modeling of land use systems in developing countries. The study accentuates local drivers of land use cover change in Southwestern Ghana using a mixed-method approach. The approach aided in identifying key land-use drivers, using different research strategies for comparisons through confidence level analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process. We used expert interviews, existing literature and geostatistical tools to ascertain the driving forces triggering such unprecedented changes. Landsat imagery 5 MSS, 4 and 5 TM, 7 ETM + and 8 OLI/TIRS were acquired from the United States Geological Survey’s website. Land-use analysis revealed a decline in forests (− 82.41%) and areas covered by waterbodies (− 27.39%). A fundamental drift in built-up (+ 1288.36%) and farmlands/shrubs (+ 369.81%) areas were also observed. The contribution rate of change analysis revealed built-environment and increasing population contributed the most to surface temperature and land-use change. A steady increase in surface temperature can be attributed to the undesirable changes associated with land-use systems over the past 50 years. Socio-economic development in Southwestern Ghana is fuelling interest in studies related to land use cover change. Biophysical, cultural and technological factors are considered key drivers despite the “medium-to-very low confidence” in results generated. They could potentially impact climate-sensitive sectors that significantly modify land-use systems from the pessimists’ and optimists’ perspectives. Standpoints established through this study will enrich basic datasets for further studies at the continental level.
Dyke‐Davidoff‐Masson syndrome—A rare cause of recurrent seizures in adulthood
Key Clinical Message It is important to consider DDMS as a differential diagnosis in any patient with early childhood onset of epilepsy. Early diagnosis and optimal management are key to reducing the disabling effect of DDMS.
