Energy Aware Software Defined Network Model for Communication of Sensors Deployed in Precision Agriculture

A significant technological transformation has recently occurred in the agriculture sector. Precision agriculture is one among those transformations that largely focus on the acquisition of the sensor data, identifying the insights, and summarizing the information for better decision-making that would enhance the resource usage efficiency, crop yield, and substantial quality of the yield resulting in better profitability, and sustainability of agricultural output. For continuous crop monitoring, the farmlands are connected with various sensors that must be robust in data acquisition and processing. The legibility of such sensors is an exceptionally challenging task, which needs energy-efficient models for handling the lifetime of the sensors. In the current study, the energy-aware software-defined network for precisely selecting the cluster head for communication with the base station and the neighboring low-energy sensors. The cluster head is initially chosen according to energy consumption, data transmission consumption, proximity measures, and latency measures. In the subsequent rounds, the node indexes are updated to select the optimal cluster head. The cluster fitness is assessed in each round to retain the cluster in the subsequent rounds. The network model’s performance is assessed against network lifetime, throughput, and network processing latency. The experimental findings presented here show that the model outperforms the alternatives presented in this study.

Domestic violence and women’s health: evidence from NFHS-5 survey data

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of domestic violence on women’s health and their healthcare access. Here, domestic violence includes physical violence, sexual violence, and emotional violence. The study is based on secondary data and the data is taken from the National Family Health Survey, round 5 (2020–21). The data file “Couple recode” is used here which is exclusively for women and their spouses and includes data on their socioeconomic and demographic profiles, women’s health issues, and domestic violence. The sample size is 46,488 of which 7,763 women are found to have experienced at least one kind of violence. The study shows that control issues are the most prominent causes of domestic violence followed by women’s higher education levels and earnings than their spouses. Age differences and drinking alcohol by men are other major reasons for domestic violence. The study further shows that domestic violence creates higher health issues such as anaemia, hypertension, low hemoglobin, heart disease, and respiratory problems among women. Women get afraid of their husbands and hence, they find difficulty in getting permission to go to healthcare facilities. They also face greater monetary problems which prevent them from healthcare access. In the short term, victim women ignore complaining about domestic violence with others, although if violence continues for a longer period, they do not hesitate to complain.

Post-stratification is applied when the subpopulation membership is observed only for sampled values and the goal is to estimate stratum-specific parameters which leads the survey statisticians towards primary goals i.e., classification of non-sampled units into different strata and prediction of the values of the study variables. Regression models, on one side, optimize the prediction of the study variable’s non-sampled values while the classification algorithms, on the other side, look for the classification of non-sampled cases into different strata. Hence, it is crucial to deal with these two goals simultaneously for the estimation of stratum-specific parameters. This study introduces the idea of a double-objective classification and regression trees (CARTs) approach for estimating stratum-specific parameters. Theoretical properties of the total estimator are derived. An application on the estimation of health outcomes in different domains is given to delineate the practical significance as well as the efficiency of the proposed CART-based method. The proposed estimator of population total performs better than the existing stratum-specific estimator in terms of relative efficiency for all choices of parameters. As an ensemble model, the random forest CART outperforms the other competing tree-based models and homogenous population model without using any auxiliary variable.

The two materials combine together to give a new material with higher strength, toughness, stiffness, but also a higher resistance to creep, corrosion, wear or fatigue compared to conventional materials. It is composed primarily of a matrix i.e. a continuous phase which is armoured with secondary discontinues reinforcement phase. Distributed groundwater recharge potentials assessment based on GIS model and its dynamics in the crystalline rocks of South India

Extensive change in land use, climate, and over-exploitation of groundwater has increased pressure on aquifers, especially in the case of crystalline rocks throughout the world. To support sustainability in groundwater management require proper understating of groundwater dynamics and recharge potential. GIS based studies have gained immense popularity in groundwater exploration in recent years because they are fast and provide recent information on the resource for future growth. Thus, the present study utilized a GIS-based Weighted Overlay Index (WOI) model to identify the potential recharge zones and to gain deep knowledge of groundwater dynamics. The in situ infiltration tests have been carried out, which is the key process in groundwater recharge and is neglected in many cases for WOI. In the WOI, ten thematic layers from the parameters influencing and involved in the recharge process are considered to identify potential recharge zones. The results suggested a significant underestimation of recharge potential without considering site-specific infiltration rates that one needs to be considered. The present WOI model considered in situ infiltration information and classified the entire area into four recharge zones, good, moderate, poor, and very poor. The final integrated map compared with the real-time field data like water level fluctuation and infiltration to analyse occurrence and quantification of recharge. The estimated average groundwater draft is 21.9 mcm, while annual renewable recharge is only 5.7 mcm that causing a continuous fall of the groundwater table. The study is useful in selecting regions with more focussed recharge studies and suggested the need of reducing groundwater demand by changing cropping patterns through a predictive decision support tool.

Alginate is a hydrophilic, biocompatible, biodegradable, and relatively economical polymer generally found in marine brown algae. The modification in the alginate molecule after polymerization has shown strong potential in biomedical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications such as wound dressing, drug delivery, dental treatment, in cell culture and tissue engineering. Besides this, alginates have industrial applications too in the paper and food industries as plasticizers and additives.
The few books that have been published on alginates focus more on their biology. This current book focuses on the exploration of alginates and their modification, characterization, derivatives, composites, hydrogels as well as the new and emerging applications.
A novel approach for estimating fertility rates in finite populations using count regression models

Demographic health surveys (DHS) contain in-depth information about the demographic characteristics and the factors affecting them. However, fertility rates which are the important indicators of population growth have been estimated by utilizing the design-based approaches. Model-based approach, on the other hand, facilitates efficient predictive estimates for these rates by utilizing the demographic and other family planning related characters. In this article, we first attempt to observe the effect of various socio-demographic and family planing related factors on births counts by fitting different regression models to Pakistan Demographic Health Survey 2017–2018 data under classical as well as Bayesian frameworks. The births occurred during the time periods of 1-year, 3-years and 5-years are taken as the responses and modeled using different non-linear models. The model-based approach is then used for estimation of the fertility measures including age-specific fertility rates, total fertility rate, general fertility rate, and gross reproduction rate for ever-married women in Pakistan. The performance of the model-based estimators is examined using a bootstrapped sampling algorithm. While the age-specific fertility rates are over-estimated for some age groups and under-estimated for others. The model-based fertility estimates are recommended for estimating the demographic indicators at national and sub-national levels when survey data contains incomplete or missing responses.
