Interactive Comping in the Rhythm Section
2004
Three methods for altering an arrangement that will allow a jazz ensemble's guitarist and pianist to interactively comp are presented. The simplest and most common method is to assign sections during which only one instrument plays. Another method is doubling the melodic line of the brass or woodwinds with the piano or guitar. The third method involves having the guitar and piano comp simultaneously by means of either identical or contrasting rhythms.
