A Pragmatic Study of Fallacies in Boris Johnson's Political Speech
A fallacy is a step in the development of an argument that is illogical. In academic writing, an argument is essentially a conclusion or claim that is supported by assumptions or other justifications. For instance, yellow is a bad color because it is associated with disease, is an argument because it states a claim and provides evidence to back it up. Regardless of whether the assertion we make is true or false, we might support it with arguments that lack logic or arguments that lack logic themselves. For someone who associates yellow with pleasure, the aforementioned argument, for instance, might be seen as fallacy. Although fallacies are common in politics, the law, and the media, they also occur frequently in everyday life. Tricksters use fallacies to get their audiences to accept illogical claims because they can make illogical arguments appear logical. But we can avoid being deceitful and falling for others' lies if we can learn to pinpoint fallacies. The current study looks into political fallacies in social media regarding the hijab banning. Fallacy as a derailment of strategic maneuvering can be defined as the process of issuing a defective argument (when subjected to certain criteria) to support and strengthen a previouslyissued one for purposes of persuasion. However, fallacy is a broad topic that has beenapproached from different perspectives.
