Economic and Political Impact of the Russia-Ukraine War on Egypt
The launched Russian invasion of Ukraine has had a severe economic and political impact on all over the world. Concerning Egypt, it caused an incredible threat to key wheat imports, some 80% of which have so far come from Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, the ongoing war is the main reason that the world food prices have generally risen to a 10-year high. Because of the war, the tourism, already hard hit by the COVID epidemic, was negatively affected, although it had hoped to make up the shortfall by the return of 300-400 000/ month Russian tourists. The war in Ukraine has also resulted in depletion of foreign currency reserves in Egypt. The balanced foreign policy of Cairo is also in a delicate position and has a particular interest in supporting the development of the domestic economy. The country is in need of investment and loans from the America and Europe and is also engaged in inevitable cooperation with Russia in food import, energy and military affairs.
Egyptian Events in the Hungarian Press 1879 1882
This study examines the portrayal of Egyptian events (1879-1882) in the Hungarian press, with particular focus on the 'Urabi Movement and its political and media resonance in Central Europe. The paper shows that Hungarian newspapers went beyond reporting facts, offering analyses that oscillated between sympathy for Egyptian national demands and alignment with European, particularly British, narratives. The study traces the course of events from the deposition of Khedive Ismail in 1879, through the outbreak of the 'Urabi Revolution, to the British military intervention and suppression of the movement in 1882. Special attention is given to representations of Ahmed 'Urabi, depicted at times as a national hero defending Egyptian dignity and independence, and at other times as a rebel threatening regional stability. The Hungarian stance was largely shaped by broader European discourse, with newspapers often echoing British and French perspectives while still hinting at the legitimacy of popular Egyptian grievances. The research presents examples of press articles from the period, highlighting their rhetorical focus on issues such as \"the Suez Canal crisis\" or \"the threat to European interests,\" reflecting the intertwining of political and economic dimensions. The study concludes that the image of the 'Urabi Movement in the Hungarian press illustrates the political instrumentalization of media in the context of European power struggles over Egypt, while simultaneously showing how Egypt's cause penetrated European awareness even in countries not directly involved in the conflict.
