Biogenic Aerosol in the Arctic from Eight Years of MSA Data from Ny Ålesund (Svalbard Islands) and Thule (Greenland)

In remote marine areas, biogenic productivity and atmospheric particulate are coupled through dimethylsulfide (DMS) emission by phytoplankton. Once in the atmosphere, the gaseous DMS is oxidized to produce H2SO4 and methanesulfonic acid (MSA); both species can affect the formation of cloud condensation nuclei. This study analyses eight years of biogenic aerosol evolution and variability at two Arctic sites: Thule (76.5° N, 68.8° W) and Ny Ålesund (78.9° N, 11.9° E). Sea ice plays a key role in determining the MSA concentration in polar regions. At the beginning of the melting season, in April, up to June, the biogenic aerosol concentration appears inversely correlated with sea ice extent and area, and positively correlated with the extent of the ice-free area in the marginal ice zone (IF-MIZ). The upper ocean stratification induced by sea ice melting might have a role in these correlations, since the springtime formation of this surface layer regulates the accumulation of phytoplankton and nutrients, allowing the DMS to escape from the sea to the atmosphere. The multiyear analysis reveals a progressive decrease in MSA concentration in May at Thule and an increase in July August at Ny Ålesund. Therefore, while the MSA seasonal evolution is mainly related with the sea ice retreat in April, May, and June, the IF-MIZ extent appears as the main factor affecting the longer-term behavior of MSA.

Major explosive volcanic eruptions may significantly alter the global atmosphere for about 2–3 years. During that period, volcanic products (mainly H2SO4) with high residence time, stored in the stratosphere or, for shorter times, in the troposphere are gradually deposited onto polar ice caps. Antarctic snow may thus record acidic signals providing a history of past volcanic events. The high resolution sulphate concentration profile along a 197 m long ice core drilled at GV7 (Northern Victoria land) was obtained by Ion Chromatography on around 3500 discrete samples. The relatively high accumulation rate (241 ± 13 mm we yr −1) and the 5-cm sampling resolution allowed a preliminary counted age scale. The obtained stratigraphy covers roughly the last millennium and 24 major volcanic eruptions were identified, dated, and tentatively ascribed to a source volcano. The deposition flux of volcanic sulphate was calculated for each signature and the results were compared with data from other Antarctic ice cores at regional and continental scale. Our results show that the regional variability is of the same order of magnitude as the continental one.

Carbonaceous Aerosol in Polar Areas: First Results and Improvements of the Sampling Strategies

While more and more studies are being conducted on carbonaceous fractions—organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC)—in urban areas, there are still too few studies about these species and their effects in polar areas due to their very low concentrations; further, studies in the literature report only data from intensive campaigns, limited in time. We present here for the first time EC–OC concentration long-time data records from the sea-level sampling site of Ny-Ålesund, in the High Arctic (5 years), and from Dome C, in the East Antarctic Plateau (1 year). Regarding the Arctic, the median (and the interquartile range (IQR)) mass concentrations for the years 2011–2015 are 352 (IQR: 283–475) ng/m3 for OC and 4.8 (IQR: 4.6–17.4) ng/m3 for EC, which is responsible for only 3% of total carbon (TC). From both the concentration data sets and the variation of the average monthly concentrations, the influence of the Arctic haze on EC and OC concentrations is evident. Summer may be interested by high concentration episodes mainly due to long-range transport (e.g., from wide wildfires in the Northern Hemisphere, as happened in 2015). The average ratio of EC/OC for the summer period is 0.05, ranging from 0.02 to 0.10, and indicates a clean environment with prevailing biogenic (or biomass burning) sources, as well as aged, highly oxidized aerosol from long-range transport. Contribution from ship emission is not evident, but this result may be due to the sampling time resolution. In Antarctica, a 1 year-around data set from December 2016 to February 2018 is shown, which does not present a clear seasonal trend. The OC median (and IQR) value is 78 (64–106) ng/m3; for EC, it is 0.9 (0.6–2.4) ng/m3, weighing for 3% on TC values. The EC/OC ratio mean value is 0.20, with a range of 0.06–0.35. Due to the low EC and OC concentrations in polar areas, correction for the blank is far more important than in campaigns carried out in other regions, largely affecting uncertainties in measured concentrations. Through the years, we have thus developed a new sampling strategy that is presented here for the first time: samplers were modified in order to collect a larger amount of particulates on a small surface, enhancing the capability of the analytical method since the thermo-optical analyzer is sensitive to carbonaceous aerosol areal density. Further, we have recently coupled such modified samplers with a sampling strategy that makes a more reliable blank correction of every single sample possible.

The Use of Urea Cream for Hand Eczema and Urea Foam for Seborrheic Dermatitis and Psoriasiform Dermatoses of the Scalp

Purpose: Urea as an ingredient in topical skin applications can aid skin integrity and hydration and have keratolytic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-pruritic effects. Skin conditions that urea-containing formulations have been utilized to treat include hand eczema/ dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasiform dermatoses of the scalp. Two monocentric, simple blind, observational studies were carried out in healthy participants to examine the efficacy and safety of two urea-containing products in these skin conditions. Patients and Methods: Study 1 tested the actions of a commercially available 30% urea topical cream on hand eczema. The product was applied [greater than or equal to]2/day for 28 [+ or -]2 days. Transepidermal water loss, skin redness, skin hydration, and participant ratings of efficacy and qualities were assessed prior to first product application and on days 14 and 29. Study 2 tested the actions of a commercially available foaming product containing 10% urea on seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasiform dermatoses. The product was applied [greater than or equal to]2/day for 28 [+ or -]2 days. Desquamation index and surface occupied by squames, analysis of extracted squames, microscopic assessment of scalp photos and participant ratings of product efficacy and qualities was carried out prior to first product application and on days 14 and 29. Results: In Study 1 (n = 20 females), results showed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in transepidermal water loss, with an increase in hydration level of the upper skin layers, and a decrease in skin redness. In Study 2 (n = 13 females, 7 males), product use led to significant (p < 0.05) decreases in desquamation measures and dryness. In both studies, the majority of participants \"agreed\" or \"slightly agreed\" that the product had good efficacy and was easy to apply. No adverse reactions were reported. Conclusion: These findings point to the utility of urea in topically applied vehicles for hand eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasiform dermatoses. Therapeutic Potential of IL-1 Antagonism in Hidradenitis Suppurativa

The immunopathogenesis of HS is partially understood and exhibits features of an autoinflammatory disease; it is associated with the potential involvement of B cells and the contribution of Th1 or Th17 cell subsets. Recently, the pathogenic role of both innate immunity and IL-1 family cytokines in HS has been deeply investigated. Several agents targeting the IL-1 family pathway at different levels are currently available and under investigation for the treatment of HS. HS is still characterized by unmet clinical needs and represents an expanding field in the current scientific research. The aim of this narrative review is to describe the pathological dysregulation of IL-1 family members in HS and to provide an update on therapeutic strategies targeting IL-1 family cytokine signaling. Further clinical and preclinical data may likely lead to the enrichment of the therapeutic armamentarium of HS with IL-1 family cytokine antagonists.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is considered the early phase of a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and represents one of the most common epithelial skin lesions, with an estimated global prevalence of approximately 14%. An estimated annual risk of progression has been reported with a range from 0 to 0.53%. Although spontaneous regression of individual AK lesions has been described in approximately 23% of cases, the frequent presence of multiple lesions, usually in the broader context of field cancerization, significantly diminishes the likelihood of regression and contributes to a higher cumulative risk of progression to SCC. The aim of the present narrative review was to provide an overview of the current evidence of the most effective available lesion-directed and field-directed treatments for actinic keratoses, on the personalized, combined, or sequential approach, as well as on the emerging therapeutic options.

In our case, however, the patient had been treated for 2 years with an IL-17A inhibitor without ever developing eczematous reactions, which occurred, however, shortly after starting therapy with bimekizumab, an IL-17A, F and A/F inhibitor.

The characterization of the day-to-night changes of the atmospheric particle chemical and optical properties in autumn–winter (AW) and spring–summer (SS) is the main goal of this study to contribute to the characterization and understanding of the particulate matter (PM) impact on the environment and climate at one of the most vulnerable areas of the planet to climate change. To this end, PM10 and PM2.5 samples from 14 January 2016 to 5 January 2017 have been collected in Lecce, a coastal site of South-Eastern Italy (40.33°N, 18.11°E), and day-to-night changes of mass concentrations of both fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM10-PM2.5) particles and corresponding chemical species have been assessed both in AW and in SS. The statistical analysis of local meteorological parameters and their correlations with PM2.5 and chemical species mass concentrations have indicated that the day-to-night changes of temperature (T) and wind speed (WS) likely affected the day-to-night changes of mass concentrations, because of the T and WS impact on the atmospheric turbulence and air particle dispersion. The daily evolution of the anthropogenic activities and the planetary-boundary-layer height likely contributed to the day-to-night changes of the particle chemical composition. The stagnant atmospheric conditions prevailing in SS all over the Mediterranean basin, which favoured the mixing and the accumulation of atmospheric particles from different pollution sources, likely contributed to the changes of the relationships between chemical species and meteorological parameters from AW to SS at daytime and nighttime. The analysis of the aerosol scattering coefficient, scattering Ångström exponent, and scattering Ångström exponent difference, retrieved from nephelometer measurements co-located in space and time with the PM samplings, has allowed characterizing the day-to-night change of the aerosol optical properties. The relationships between the particle chemical and optical properties allowed a good understanding of their changes both in AW and in SS.

Leser-Trélat Sign (LTS) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by the sudden eruption of multiple seborrheic keratoses in patients with internal malignancy, commonly localized in the gastrointestinal tract. We report an 80-year-old female patient showing a rapid increase in the number and size of seborrheic keratosis associated with the diagnosis of a cutaneous nodular melanoma (Breslow thickness: 4.5 mm) located on the right flank. After the excision of melanoma, subsequent staging procedures resulted negative, moreover no evidence of melanoma recurrence and no changes of the seborrheic keratoses was detected after a follow-up of 52 months. Although the association between melanoma and Leser Trelat sign is rare, an accurate skin examination with the aid of dermatoscopy searching for undiagnosed skin cancers, should be suggested in patient with sudden eruption of keratosis seborrheic to early diagnose and treat a possible melanoma.

PM10 variation, composition, and source analysis in Tuscany (Italy) following the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions

To control the spread of COVID-19, exceptional restrictive measures were taken in March 2020 that imposed a radical change on the lifestyle of millions of citizens around the world, albeit for a short period. The national lockdown, which lasted from 10 March to 18 May 2020 in Italy, was a unique opportunity to observe the variation in air quality in urban environments under conditions comprising almost total traffic restriction and a strong reduction in work activities. In this paper, the data from 17 urban monitoring sites in Tuscany are presented, and the PM and NO2 concentrations in the 2 months before the start of the lockdown and the 2 months after lockdown are compared with the corresponding months of the previous 3 years. The results show that the total loads of PM2.5 and PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 and 10 µm, respectively) decreased, but they did not exhibit significant changes compared to previous years, whereas NO2 underwent a drastic reduction. For three of these sites, the chemical composition of the collected samples was measured using thermal–optical techniques, ion chromatography, and particle-induced X-ray emission analysis, and the application of multivariate positive matrix factorization analysis also allowed for PM10 source identification and apportionment. Using these analyses, it was possible to explain the low sensitivity of PM10 to the lockdown effects as being due to different, sometimes inverse, behaviors of the different sources that contribute to PM. The results clearly indicate a decline in pollution levels related to urban traffic and an increase in the concentration of sulfate for all sites during the lockdown period.
