Imperial republics : revolution, war, and territorial expansion from the English Civil War to the French Revolution
\"Republicanism and imperialism are typically understood to be located at opposite ends of the political spectrum. In Imperial Republics, Edward G. Andrew challenges the supposed incompatibility of these theories with regard to seventeenth- and eighteenth-century revolutions in England, the United States, and France.
Life at the academic coalface: validation of a holistic academic workload estimation tool
2023
This paper reports on research exploring the academic workload and performance practices of Australian universities. This research has identified a suite of activities associated with teaching, research and service, each with an associated time value (allocation). This led to the development of the academic workload estimation tool (AWET). In 2020, to validate the findings, we contacted academics willing to participate further and conducted interviews. We used the AWET to estimate workload for each individual for the previous year and compared it to the workload allocated according to their institutional workload model. Discrepancies were then discussed to ascertain to what extent the AWET was able to capture their work. In general, the participants thought the AWET provided a more realistic estimate of their actual work and highlighted how much is underestimated or unaccounted for by the workload models used within their institutions. It also showed how academic performance policies, focussed primarily on research output, disadvantaged many individuals because they ignored or minimised many scholarly, teaching and service-related tasks inherent in the academic role. Overall, the findings showed the AWET was a useful tool to discuss academic work and assisted them to better capture the complexity and extent of what they did. We offer the AWET as a validated approach for academics to estimate their workload in a holistic and transparent manner. We suggest its implementation institution-wide, along with an aligned performance policy, will facilitate negotiation of reasonable performance expectations. This will rebuild trust in the processes and improve a university’s effectiveness.

Print, text and book cultures in South Africa : ill
\"Print, Text and Book Cultures in South Africa is a field-defining contribution to the country\\2019s literary scholarship. Andrew van der Vlies\\2019s introductory essay maps the conceptual terrain in a systematic and engaging way, illustrating its relevance to South Africa\\2019s literary and cultural history. The essays that follow demonstrate the archival richness and liveliness of the field, while opening doors to future research. Beyond South Africa, the book will be exemplary in showing how book histories develop under postcolonial conditions\"--Back cover.
Patrons of Enlightenment
2006,2014
All major writers of the Enlightenment enjoyed royal or aristocratic patronage, often denying their financial dependency and claiming to live by the labours of their pens or by the expanding readership of the eighteenth century, thereby maintaining the ideal of intellectual autonomy.
InPatrons of Enlightenment, Edward G. Andrew examines the conditions in which the central idea of Enlightenment was fabricated; intellectual autonomy was constructed while patronage was being transformed by a commercial print culture. Andrew further argues that since an Enlightenment depends on a relationship of plebeian genius and patrician taste, England could not have had one - as the French and Scots did - because after the English civil war, plebeians did not contribute to the intellectual culture of England.
Patrons of Enlightenmentemphasizes the dependency of thinkers upon patrons and compares the patron-client relationships in the French, English, and Scottish republics of letters. Andrew challenges philosophers to rethink the Platonic distinction between philosophers and sophists and the Aristotelian view of philosophers as godlike in their self-sufficiency.
Liberal Environmentalism Without Capitalism’s Endless Growth
2025
Eco-socialists argue that capitalism is incompatible with environmental sustainability and democratic egalitarian values. They argue that capitalist reforms, including ‘green growth’ and ‘degrowth,’ fail to take capitalism’s growth imperative seriously. I argue that Rawls’s justice as fairness offers a reasonable alternative to eco-socialism. Rawls rejects capitalism as incompatible with democratic egalitarian values. I argue further that Rawls’s distributive principles do not require growth, and his account of intergenerational justice requires controlling growth. Justice as fairness , however, offers two ways to realize justice. First, a property-owning democracy (POD) broadly disperses control and ownership of productive means. Second, liberal socialism socializes ownership and disperses control of productive means. Socialists respond that POD keeps capital intact and therefore cannot control growth. I argue that the empirical literature on growth shows that the capital process is insufficient to explain growth. I contend that POD should implement degrowth policies to address the other growth imperatives.

Integrin α3β1 promotes vessel formation of glioblastoma-associated endothelial cells through calcium-mediated macropinocytosis and lysosomal exocytosis
2022
Therapeutic targeting of angiogenesis in glioblastoma has yielded mixed outcomes. Investigation of tumor-associated angiogenesis has focused on the factors that stimulate the sprouting, migration, and hyperproliferation of the endothelial cells. However, little is known regarding the processes underlying the formation of the tumor-associated vessels. To address this issue, we investigated vessel formation in CD31
+
cells isolated from human glioblastoma tumors. The results indicate that overexpression of integrin α3β1 plays a central role in the promotion of tube formation in the tumor-associated endothelial cells in glioblastoma. Blocking α3β1 function reduced sprout and tube formation in the tumor-associated endothelial cells and vessel density in organotypic cultures of glioblastoma. The data further suggest a mechanistic model in which integrin α3β1-promoted calcium influx stimulates macropinocytosis and directed maturation of the macropinosomes in a manner that promotes lysosomal exocytosis during nascent lumen formation. Altogether, our data indicate that integrin α3β1 may be a therapeutic target on the glioblastoma vasculature.
Tumour-associated angiogenesis facilitates the growth of tumours. Here the authors show that integrin α3β1 promotes blood vessel formation in glioblastoma through calcium-mediated macropinocytosis and lysosomal exocytosis.

The cosmopolitan subfamily Acidocerinae (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) is one of the largest and most taxonomically challenging lineages of water scavenger beetles. Recent phylogenetic studies have substantially advanced our understanding of acidocerine relationships but also illuminated the twin challenges of poorly delineated generic concepts and a classification broadly incompatible with the phylogeny. Here, these two challenges are addressed by providing a comprehensive synthesis and taxonomic tools for the Acidocerinae, including (1) a brief history and the current state of acidocerine classification, (2) a review of acidocerine ecology and collection methods, (3) the current knowledge of larval and fossil acidocerines, (4) a morphological primer on characters of taxonomic and systematic importance within the lineage, (5) a key to the world genera of Acidocerinae, (6) diagnoses, habitus, and aedeagal images, distribution maps, and summary of knowledge for each of the 23 extant genera in the subfamily, and (7) a complete annotated taxonomic catalog including the published distributions, synonyms, and references for all described 541 acidocerine species recognized as of 1 April 2021. The following nomenclatural acts are proposed to bring the phylogeny and classification into alignment: Colossochares gen. nov. is established to accommodate two African species previously described as Helochares (s. str.); Novochares gen. nov. is newly established to accommodate 15 Neotropical species previously included in Helochares (s. str.); the remaining Helochares subgenera Helocharimorphus Kuwert syn. nov. and Hydrobaticus MacLeay syn. nov. are synonymized with Helochares Mulsant. Peltochares Régimbart sensu nov. is redefined to include eight Old World species previously included in Helochares (s. str.). A lectotype is designated for Peltochares conspicuus Régimbart, the type species of the genus. The taxonomic and morphological circumscription of Helochares sensu nov. is narrowed and redefined.
