Psychiatric health of Icelandic adults 40 years or older: A nationwide study of diagnoses, medications, and symptoms

Nationwide, population-based psychiatric health data, preferably incorporating information from various assessment methods such as health registries and self-report measures, are needed to manage healthcare systems and shape public health policies. The aim of the study is to assess the psychiatric health of individuals 40 years and older by examining data on psychiatric diagnoses, medication, anxiety and depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction. This is a cross-sectional study using a nationwide cohort. All Icelanders 40 years and older were invited to participate in this cross-sectional study, and 80,759 (54.3%) registered. Data from health registries and validated self-report measures were used. A total of 16,764 individuals (20.8%) received one or more psychiatric diagnoses in the year prior to starting the study, with nonorganic sleep disorders, other anxiety disorders, and a depressive episode being the most common. Additionally, 27,642 (34.2%) filled at least one psychotropic prescription (19.9% without a formal diagnosis filled prescriptions), with 24.3% filling one or more prescriptions for benzodiazepine related medications or benzodiazepine derivatives. Rates of diagnoses and filled prescriptions increased across age groups. Most participants reported no or mild anxiety (94.3%), and minimal or mild depressive symptoms (88.8%). Over half (59.3%) reported satisfaction or extreme satisfaction with life. The results reveal the widespread prevalence of psychiatric disorders across the population in a real-world, nationwide context, emphasizing the need for psychiatric care. However, the non-specific and broad nature of diagnoses limits the ability to provide appropriate care. Additionally, the findings highlight a reliance on psychotropic medications to manage psychiatric symptoms and disorders, even without a formal diagnosis. The rate of filled benzodiazepine prescriptions is alarming, as these medications are not recommended as a first-line treatment for psychiatric disorders. The findings provide population-based psychiatric health data that can inform healthcare management and guide public health policy.

A model of gameful design for learning using interactive tabletops: enactment and evaluation in the socio-emotional education classroom

Building on established pedagogy and technological advancement, this article presents a model of gameful design for learning using interactive tabletops, enacted and evaluated in the context of socio-emotional education. Based on the proposed model, we detail the design of a technology-enhanced learning experience in which a series of traditional lessons are enriched by collaborative work on interactive tabletops; four gameful activities are used which may be directly linked to a school curriculum. We conduct a qualitative case study with the participation of 86 fifth grade students across two elementary schools which have a significant minority enrolment. We demonstrate the ways in which the students draw on recently-acquired knowledge, engage in dramatic play, share the digital space and collaborate intensively to achieve a new and refined understanding of concepts and behaviours linked to perspective-taking. We discuss how tabletops, in synergy with constructivist pedagogy and principles of gameful design, allow researchers and practitioners to promote communication, collaboration and perspective-taking in ways that were hitherto difficult to enact in traditional lessons. Gameful design for learning is seen as a multilevel endeavour, which involves the selection of tasks and tools as well as the behaviour of the learners and the instructor as participants in the learning environment.

Educational robotics are increasingly appearing in educational settings, being considered a useful supporting tool for the development of cognitive skills, including Computational Thinking (CT), for students of all ages. Meanwhile, there is an overwhelming argument that CT will be a fundamental skill needed for all individuals by the middle of the twenty-first century and thus, should be cultivated in the early school years, as part of the child’s analytical thinking and as a principal component of Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) education. This study reviews published literature at the intersection of CT and educational robotics, particularly focused on the use of educational robotics for advancing students’ CT skills in K-12. The reviewed articles reveal initial evidence suggesting that educational robotics can foster students’ cognitive and social skills. The paper discusses specific areas for further inquiry by learning researchers and learning practitioners. Such inquiry should start from a widely agreed definition of CT and validated measurement instruments for its assessment. A practical framework for the development of CT via robotics is next in demand, so as instructional designers and educators can implement it consistently and at scale.

Recent literature has ascribed that the paracrine action of stem cells is mediated by exosomes. Exosomes are nano-sized extracellular vesicles (30 to 100 nm) of endocytic origin that play important roles in intercellular communication. They have the ability to deliver various therapeutic effects, e.g., skin regeneration or cardiac function recovery, when applied topically or injected systemically. However, injection of exosomes has been shown to result in rapid clearance from blood circulation and accumulation of the exosomes in the liver, spleen, lung, and gastrointestinal tract can be found as early as 2 h after injection. Topical administration of exosomes on the skin or ocular surface would suffer the same fate due to rapid fluid turnover (sweat or tears). Biodegradable or highly porous hydrogels have been utilized to load exosomes and to deliver a sustained therapeutic effect. They can also prevent the exosomes from being cleared prematurely and allow the delivery of a more localized and concentrated exosome dosage by placing the hydrogel directly at or in the proximity of the target site. In this mini-review, we elaborate on the challenges of conventional exosome administration and highlight the solution to the shortcomings in the form of exosome-incorporated hydrogels. Different techniques to encapsulate exosomes and examples of hydrogels that have been used to create sustained delivery systems of exosomes are also discussed.

Increasing Probability of Heat-Related Mortality in a Mediterranean City Due to Urban Warming

Extreme temperatures impose thermal stress on human health, resulting in increased hospitalizations and mortality rate. We investigated the circulatory and respiratory causes of death for the years 2007 to 2014 inclusive for the urban and rural areas of Nicosia, Cyprus under urban heatwave and non-heatwave conditions. Heatwaves were defined as four or more consecutive days with mean urban daily temperature over the 90th percentile threshold temperature of the eight investigated years. Lag period of adverse health effects was found to be up to three days following the occurrence of high temperatures. The relative risk (RR) for mortality rate under heatwave and non-heatwave conditions was found taking in consideration the lag period. The results showed the increase of mortality risk particularly for men of ages 65–69 (RR = 2.38) and women of ages 65–74 (around RR = 2.54) in the urban area, showing that women were more vulnerable to heat extremities. High temperatures were also associated with high ozone concentrations, but they did not impose an excess risk factor, as they did not reach extreme values. This analysis highlights the importance of preparing for potential heat related health impacts even in Cyprus, which is an island with frequent heatwaves.
