Islam and controversy : the politics of free speech after Rushdie
\"Was Salman Rushdie right to have written The Satanic Verses? Were the protestors right to have protested? What about the Danish cartoons? Is giving offence simply about the right to freedom of expression, and what is really happening when people take offence? Using case studies of a number of Muslim-related freedom of speech controversies surrounding (in)famous, controversial texts such as The Satanic Verses, The Jewel of Medina, the Danish cartoons of Muhammed and the film Submission by Theo van Gogh, this book examines the moral questions raised by such controversies, questions that are often set aside at the time, such as whether the authors and artists involved were right to have done what they did and whether those who protested against them were right to have responded in such a way. In so doing, it argues that the giving and taking of offence are political performances that struggle to define and re-define freedom, and suggests that any attempt to establish a language of inter-cultural communication appropriate to multicultural societies is an ethical as opposed to merely political or legal task, involving dialogue and negotiation over fundamental values and principles. Applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Cryosphere: Latest Advances and Prospects
Owing to usual logistic hardships related to field-based cryospheric research, remote sensing has played a significant role in understanding the frozen components of the Earth system. Conventional spaceborne or airborne remote sensing platforms have their own merits and limitations. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a viable and inexpensive option for studying the cryospheric components at unprecedented spatiotemporal resolutions. UAVs are adaptable to various cryospheric research needs in terms of providing flexibility with data acquisition windows, revisits, data/sensor types (multispectral, hyperspectral, microwave, thermal/night imaging, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and photogrammetric stereos), viewing angles, flying altitudes, and overlap dimensions. Thus, UAVs have the potential to act as a bridging remote sensing platform between spatially discrete in situ observations and spatially continuous but coarser and costlier spaceborne or conventional airborne remote sensing. In recent years, a number of studies using UAVs for cryospheric research have been published. However, a holistic review discussing the methodological advancements, hardware and software improvements, results, and future prospects of such cryospheric studies is completely missing. In the present scenario of rapidly changing global and regional climate, studying cryospheric changes using UAVs is bound to gain further momentum and future studies will benefit from a balanced review on this topic. Our review covers the most recent applications of UAVs within glaciology, snow, permafrost, and polar research to support the continued development of high-resolution investigations of cryosphere. We also analyze the UAV and sensor hardware, and data acquisition and processing software in terms of popularity for cryospheric applications and revisit the existing UAV flying regulations in cold regions of the world. The recent usage of UAVs outlined in 103 case studies provide expertise that future investigators should base decisions on.
Unravelling the jerky glide of dislocations in body-centred cubic crystals
In situ straining tests in high purity α-Fe thin foils at low temperatures 1 have demonstrated that crystal line defects, called dislocations, have a jerky type of motion made of intermittent long jumps of several nanometres. This observation conflicts with the standard Peierls mechanism for plastic deformation in body-centred cubic crystals, where the screw dislocation jumps are limited by inter-reticular distances, that is, distances of a few angstroms. Employing atomic-scale simulations, we show that although the short jumps are initially more favourable, their realization requires the propagation of a kinked profile along the dislocation line, which yields coherent atomic vibrations acting as travelling thermal spikes. Such local heat bursts favour the thermally assisted nucleation of new kinks in the wake of primary ones. The accumulation of new kinks leads to long dislocation jumps like those observed experimentally. Our study constitutes an important step towards predictive atomic-scale theory for materials deformation. Plastic deformation requires the propagation of a kinked profile along dislocations. It is shown that each kink acts as a set of travelling thermal spikes, favouring the nucleation of supplementary kinks and long dislocation jumps that are observed experimentally.
Groundwater quality assessment using SPSS based on multivariate statistics and water quality index of Gaya, Bihar (India)
Groundwater is a valuable resource for developmental activities, and its demand is growing as surface water becoming scarce. Groundwater demand is increasing, resulting in reduction in water level and deterioration in water quality. A total of 156 groundwater samples were taken from Gaya, a district in Bihar (India), to check the safety of drinking water. The quality of groundwater was assessed using a water quality index (WQI). Analysed samples were assessed using a variety of physicochemical characteristics, and statistical methods principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were used as they are effective and efficient. As per the Gibbs, plot majority of the sample falls in the rock-water interaction and some evaporation dominance field. The domination of major cation in the order of Ca 2+  > Mg 2+  > Na + and the major anions followed the order of HCO 3 −  >  Cl - > SO 4 2 - > NO 3 - > PO 4 2 - . The KMO’s sample adequacy value of 0.703 and the significance level of Bartlett’s test of sphericity (0.0001) were indicating that PCA may be implemented. Using the PCA, the three components recovered explained 69.58% of the total variation. Cluster analysis classified the groundwater sample into three cluster based on the similarities among chemical parameters involved in groundwater quality. HCA exhibit less, intermediate, and heavily mineralized groundwater characteristics of groups I, II, and III, respectively. The major parameters affecting the water quality in the study region are TDS, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO 3 − , Cl - , F - , and PO 4 2 - . WQI indicates 17% of the sample were found to be of very poor quality and not consumable. The study’s findings offer insights and understanding into groundwater pollution regimes. These results used for water quality assessment leading to improved environmental management and planning and in decision-making for water quality management.
Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders: Etiology, Pathogenesis, and Transformation Into Oral Cancer

Among oral diseases, oral cancer is a critical health issue due to its life-threatening potential. Globocan, in its 2020 report, estimated ∼0.37 million new cases of oral cancer, with the majority of them coming from the Asian continent. The WHO has anticipated a rise in the incidences of oral cancer in the coming decades. Various factors, such as genetic, epigenetic, microbial, habitual, and lifestyle factors, are closely associated with oral cancer occurrence and progression. Oral lesions, inherited genetic mutations (dyskeratosis congenital syndrome), and viral infections (HPV) are early signs of oral cancer. Lesions with dysplastic features have been categorized under oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), such as oral leukoplakia, erythroplakia, oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, are assumed to have a high risk of malignancy. The incidence and prevalence of OPMDs are recorded as being high in South-Asian countries. Early detection, prevention, and treatment of OPMDs are needed to prevent its malignant transformation into oral cancer. Many advanced diagnostic techniques are used to predict their progression and to assess the risk of malignant transformation. This communication provides insight into the importance of early detection and prevention of OPMDs.
