Jordanian nurses' job satisfaction and intention to quit
Purpose - This study aimed to identify factors that influenced job satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and the intention of staff nurses to quit nursing in three Jordanian healthcare delivery sectors.Design methodology approach - A cross-sectional design was used to answer the research aims. A purposive sample of 180 critical care nurses in three hospitals during 2007 was used. Nurses completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of demographic items, a job satisfaction survey, as well as a question eliciting the intention to quit. The authors used descriptive and inferential statistics, ANOVA, correlational, regression and post-hoc tests to analyze the data.Findings - The grand mean for satisfaction for all nurses was 3.44 (±0.51) out of 6. They reported being highly satisfied with the item \"I like the people I work with\", and reported the least satisfaction with the item \"I have too much to do at work\". The mean value for nurses' intention to quit was 2.56 (±0.89) out of 4, with 59 per cent reporting that they \"Likely\" or \"Very Likely\" intended to leave their workplace. The nurses' level of job satisfaction significantly predicted their intention to leave their workplace (F=32.1, p < 0.001).Practical implications - The results can be used as a basis for decision making and future planning. Results also highlight the need to emphasize positive factors to enhance employees' satisfaction and to brainstorm solutions for improving job satisfaction and retaining nurses.Originality value - The study addressed an important clinical concern at a time of sparse research literature in Jordan. The findings are noteworthy and important for the delivery of proper nursing care that would lead to improved health status for the society.
Association Between Social Media Use and Patients’ Choice of Medical Practitioners Among the General Population in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study
Background: Social media is increasingly shaping patient decision-making about the choice of healthcare providers. However, its role in the Saudi context remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine the association between social media use and patient decision-making regarding the choice of healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study used a validated online questionnaire. The study was conducted between December 2023 and May 2024 to assess demographics, social media usage, and decision-making factors. Results: 1242 participants completed the survey; most participants (96.2%) had personal social media accounts. Instagram (41.3%) and X (37.6%) were the preferred platforms to look up or follow doctors. The most influential factors in choosing a healthcare provider included physician qualifications, online reviews, and patient testimonials. While 81.3% believed medical practices should maintain a social media presence, traditional factors remained more decisive than promotional content. Younger participants, females, and those in the health field were significantly more likely to follow doctors online (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Social media plays a notable role in patient decision-making about healthcare provider selection in Saudi Arabia, particularly among younger individuals and those working in the health sector. Nevertheless, clinical qualifications and trust indicators remain paramount. These findings support the need for healthcare professionals to maintain a credible, ethical, and informative digital presence to enhance patient engagement and informed decision-making.
Encapsulation of Cinnamic Acid by Cucurbit7uril for Enhancing Photoisomerization
Cis- or Z-configuration is required for the plant growth-promoting activity of cinnamic acid (CA), whereas the E-form is inactive. Herein, we describe the encapsulation of E-CA by cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) and show that photoisomerization reactions can be more efficiently controlled in aqueous solutions by utilizing this supramolecular approach. Measurements of UV–visible absorption and proton NMR spectra at different pH values confirm that E-CA and its methyl ester, methyl-E-cinnamate (MC), form stronger 1:1 host–guest complexes with CB7 compared to cucurbit[8]uril (CB8) or three cyclodextrins (α-, β-, and γ-CD). Irradiation of (300 nm) UV light to an aqueous solution of the CB7-bound E isomers induces E to Z photoisomerization and the dissociation of the complex. When the same solution is irradiated by (254 nm) UV light, Z to E conformational changes of the unbound Z isomers are observed and are accompanied by restoring the host–guest complex formation.
SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Prevalence Across Unvaccinated Health Care Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Yemen: Cross-Sectional Study
The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges to health care centers across Yemen. The lack of access to COVID-19 vaccines and limited availability of personal protective equipment greatly increased the risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure among health care workers (HCWs). Only a few studies have examined the seroprevalence and burden of SARS-CoV-2 among Yemeni HCWs. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and associated risk factors among a cohort of unvaccinated HCWs in Ibb City, the capital of Ibb Governorate, located in the highlands of southwestern Yemen between July 2022 and January 2023. Unvaccinated HCWs employed in public and private hospitals, dispensaries, pharmacies, and laboratories in Ibb City during the past 6 months were eligible. Blood samples, occupational information, and structured interviews using a questionnaire were collected from a convenience sample of 396 unvaccinated HCWs actively providing health care services between July 2022 and January 2023. SARS-CoV-2 antibody presence was determined using a lateral flow immunoassay. Of the 396 HCWs tested, 268 (67.7%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, with no significant difference in seropositivity between sex (P=.29). Key factors associated with seropositivity included occupation and workplace. Compared to laboratory technicians (76/124, 61%), nurses (93/124, 75%; odds ratio [OR] 1.89, 95% CI 1.10-3.26; P=.02) and physician assistants (13/14, 92.9%; OR 8.21, 95% CI 1.04-64.79; P=.046) had significantly higher odds of seropositivity. Similarly, working in hospitals was associated with significantly higher odds of seropositivity compared to working in laboratories (OR 2.77, 95% CI 1.59-4.81; P<.001). Overall, 82% (219/268) of seropositive HCWs reported COVID-19-related symptoms within the last 6 months (OR 3.82, 95% CI 2.40-6.09; P<.001), the majority being fever (191/256, 74.6%; OR 2.40, 95% CI 1.56-3.72; P<.001), headache (175/230, 76.1%; OR 2.50, 95% CI 1.62-3.84; P<.001), cough (162/205, 79%; OR 3.02, 95% CI 1.94-4.70; P<.001), or loss of taste (155/202, 76.7%; OR 2.36, 95% CI 1.53-3.65; P<.001) or smell (146/191, 76.4%; OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.43-3.41; P<.001). This study reveals a high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among HCWs in Ibb City, Yemen, underscoring the impact of limited vaccination and personal protective equipment availability in 2022 and 2023. These findings highlight the urgent need for improved protective measures and vaccination efforts in conflict-affected regions.
Measurement the uranium, radon and radium concentrations in urine samples for diabetics in Najaf city
In this study, the total number of urine samples were 88 for diabetic patients and healthy controls in Najaf city of Iraq. Uranium, radium and radon concentration levels were estimated using CR-39 detector method. The samples have been grouped in two groups of 44 individuals each. The first group of urine samples were taken as 22 healthy controls and 22 diabetic patients from different regions of Najaf city. The second group were taken from Al-Ansaar region also as 22 healthy controls and 22 diabetic patients. Results indicate the presence of uranium, radium and radon pollution in all urine samples for four groups. It was found that urine samples of Al-Ansaar area were more polluted with radiation than those of other regions in Najaf city. Also urine samples of diabetic patients were more polluted specially with radon than urine samples of healthy controls.
