Islam in the West : perceptions and reactions
This text focuses on the way Muslims and mainstream societies in the West, especially in America, Australia, and Europe, perceive each other. It focuses on the meaning of being a Muslim in a multicultural, multi-religious, and technologically developed world. The essays in the volume explore the socio-political, cultural, and historical differences between the two groups, Muslims and Western societies, while attempting to reconcile some of these differences in creative ways by initiating constructive dialogues between them. It also takes into account the tensions, challenges, and complexities between these communities across various contexts, including, schools, universities, media, government, private, and public institutions. This volume thus explores this interplay between perceptions and misperceptions by delving into the societal structures of Western host and immigrant communities.
On the Performance of Energy Harvesting Dual-Hop Free-Space Optical Communication Systems with Secrecy Analysis

In this study, we present a dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying-based free-space optical (FSO) communication system. We consider utilizing simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) with a time-splitting technique at the relay, where the direct current component of the received optical signal is harvested as a transmit power for the relay. It is assumed that the FSO links experience a Malaga turbulence channel with pointing errors. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed communication system, closed-form expressions for outage probability, ergodic capacity, average bit error rate, and throughput are derived. Additionally, to analyze the physical layer security of the proposed system, closed-form expressions for secrecy outage probability and strictly positive secrecy capacity are obtained. Finally, the accuracy of the derived analytical expressions are validated with Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that our proposed system model outperforms its non-SLIPT counterpart.

emissions have pushed scientists to develop new technologies for a more sustainable bio-based economy. Microbial conversion of CO
2
and CO
2
-derived carbon substrates into valuable compounds can contribute to carbon neutrality and sustainability. Here, we discuss the potential of C1 carbon sources as raw materials to produce energy, materials, and food and feed using microbial cell factories. We provide an overview of potential microbes, natural and synthetic C1 utilization pathways, and compare their metabolic driving forces. Finally, we sketch a future in which C1 substrates replace traditional feedstocks and we evaluate the costs associated with such an endeavor.
The utilization of one-carbon assimilation pathways for bioproduction represents a promising direction towards a more sustainable bio-based economy. Here, the authors compare the thermodynamic efficiencies and energy demand of C1-assimilation pathways and discuss their implementation for energy, material, and food production.

Atrioventricular block in patients with hyperthyroidism: a narrative review

Atrioventricular block (AVB) is a rare cardiac manifestation of hyperthyroidism (HTH). The scientific literature contains multiple reports of AVB in patients with HTH, ranging from subclinical to overt HTH and even thyroid storm. However, much remains unknown about the true prevalence, clinical course, optimal management, and outcomes of AVB in patients with HTH. Such patients are possibly overtreated with pacemakers because of a lack of understanding that AVB might be secondary to the hyperthyroid state and thus reversible. This narrative review discusses the pathophysiology of AVB in patients with HTH in the context of the available evidence.

Investigation of the Impact of Environmental Degradation on the Transition to Clean Energy: New Evidence from Sultanate of Oman

All nations are searching for ways to address their environmental gaps to assure long-term sustainability, given the alarming rate at which the environment is deteriorating. As one of the nations pursuing clean energy, Oman needs to embrace eco-friendly practices that can encourage sustainability and resource efficiency to establish green ecosystems. This study uses an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to examine the link between CO2 emissions, GDP, energy consumption, financial development, foreign direct investment, urbanization, and population in the Sultanate of Oman between 1990 and 2023. The Middle Eastern nation of Oman was selected for the case study because it has traditionally depended on its domestic fossil fuel resources. Furthermore, the country has been a net exporter and surplus oil producer, underscoring Oman’s long-standing reliance on fossil fuels. The findings indicate that urbanization and GDP lower CO2 emissions, whereas population growth, energy use, FDI, and financial development raise emissions. As per the EKC model, the GDP2 coefficient was 0.488 and β1 < 0. This suggests that there is a positive correlation between environmental degradation and economic growth in Oman, although the EKC only applies up to a particular income level. The findings suggest enacting additional environmental regulations to support sustainable business behavior, raising public understanding of environmental issues, using more clean energy technologies, lowering energy consumption, and reaching the goal of net-zero carbon emissions.

The role of climate parameters variation in the intensification of dust phenomenon

In recent years, the influence of natural agents such as drought and human activities has contributed to the intensification of dust phenomena. The storms came up in recent decade in most parts of Iran are new-fangled phenomena as regards intensification, extent, and frequency. Some reasons encouraging such environmental changes are shared by climate parameters. In this research, climate variations were investigated by scrutinizing long-term rainfall and temperature data via statistical and graphical tools. The relation between these variations and dust rate in Kurdistan Province, Iran, was studied. Mann–Kendall graphical test was used to explore the changes that occurred in the time series for average monthly temperature and rainfall. Spatial distribution of temperature and rainfall along with drought indices was supplied in the GIS environment. Also, alterations in the dust phenomenon were studied by analyzing the number of days with dust. The results showed that the changes in rainfall and temperature parameters have led to drought spread in the area. Within a long-term 30-year time series, 19 and 31 months were recorded as for changes in, respectively, average precipitation and temperature in the stations of the study area. In this trend, 7 and 5 months were reported with reference to abrupt changes in precipitation and temperature, respectively. Also, the number of days with dust has been increasing significantly. The results of this research could help quantify the role factors affecting the development of this phenomenon in the region.
