Small Nations and Great Powers
Introduces the geographical, historical and ethno-linguistic framework of the Caucasus, focusing on the Russian incorporation of the region, the root most conflicts; analyses individual conflicts, from their origins to the attempts at resolving them; analyses the role of the three regional powers (Turkey, Iran and Russia); and sets out a synthesis of the Caucasian conflicts and a conclusion on the place of the Caucasus in world affairs. 'A fine and important book, and usually accompanied by a helpful bibliography and collection of maps.' - Central Asian Survey 'A useful source for Western readers' knowledge about the Caucasus and its present political problems.' - Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society
A Hausa Language and Linguistics Bibliography 1976-86, (including supplementary material for other years)
Sergio Baldi's Systematic Hausa Bibliography was published in 1977. Since, however, his latest entries are dated 1976, and obviously incomplete for this year, it was decided to begin this latest bibliography in 1976 and to thus overlap with Baldi's work. Note that any reference already found in Baldi for 1976 has not been included, although a fair number of pre-1976 entries not found in his work will be found here. Select Chadic and other works on music, sociolinguistics and language policy have been included. The sweep of this list is not as broad as one would have wished-the problem of tracking down relevant literature in Nigeria and Niger proved to be intractable, for example. Nevertheless, it is hoped that this bibliography will prove to be a useful tool for anyone with an interest in the Hausa language.
Scoring thermal limits in small insects using open-source, computer assisted motion detection
Scoring large amounts of thermal tolerance traits live or with recorded video can be time consuming and susceptible to investigator bias, and as with many physiological measurements, there can be trade-offs between accuracy and throughput. Recent studies show that particle tracking is a viable alternative to manually scoring videos, although it may not detect subtle movements, and many of the software options are proprietary and costly. In this study, we present a novel strategy for automated scoring of thermal tolerance videos by inferring motor activity with motion detection using an open-source Python command line application called DIME (Detector of Insect Motion Endpoint). We apply our strategy to both dynamic and static thermal tolerance assays, and our results indicate that DIME can accurately measure thermal acclimation responses, generally agrees with visual estimates of thermal limits, and can significantly increase the throughput over manual methods.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.
