The Issue of Spelling Confusion in Teaching EFL Literary Texts
The present research is intended to investigate the causes of spelling confusion and to find out whether teaching spelling lessons may improve the understanding of literary texts. A review of the related literature has been undertaken and an experimentation conducted. The experimentation consisted of evaluating learners' background knowledge using a pre-test, administrating a treatment period and assessing the impact of the latter on the learners' spelling abilities via a post-treatment test. The study revealed that the learners do commit spelling errors due to various reasons, such as a lack of knowledge about the grammatical rules, a limited vocabulary, or the complexity of the English spelling system. The study also revealed that teaching spelling rules can contribute to improve the learners' semantic acquisition and understanding of literary texts.
