The exorbitant cost of freedom of speech The only reason Libertarian Party candidate for president Harry Browne is being excluded from the debates is that he admirably refused campaign money from the government, which is derived from our tax dollars. Therefore, the Libertarian Party has a more difficult time getting media coverage and, consequently, receive low approval ratings in the polls. When Dick Williams preached against election year conversions by politicians (mostly Democratic) in \"This is the year for political gymnastics,\" he conveniently neglected to mention the \"brazen flip-flops\" of presidential candidate [Bob Dole]. Among other things, Dole instantly mutated into a supply-side economist who now stands against affirmative action for the first time in his long career. Rebels with a cause Responding to a Mike Luckovich cartoon, the Journal-Constitution's editorial department has received form postcards ---1,689 of them, and counting ---from members of the Heritage Committee Sons of Confederate Veterans based in Columbia, Tenn. Mike Luckovich libels my Confederate ancestors by portraying in a false light the real heritage of the Confederate Battle Flag. I object to Mr. Luckovich's cartoons because I: - Believe that my Confederate ancestors fought for the right of local government, guaranteed constitutional freedoms and self- determination; - Know that they gave their bounty, homes and lives in that great struggle and that their memories are embodied reverently in the battlefields, memorials, flags and symbols of the South; and - Realize that select groups are waging campaigns of misinformation and actively are seeking to have these symbols of our ancestors, particularly the Confederate battle flag, eradicated from the land for which they fought.
