The question whether urokinase is expressed in human colon cancer by the cancer cells themselves or by surrounding stromal elements such as fibroblasts, macrophages, and leukocytes, which transfer the activator to the receptors of the cancer cells, has been a controversial one. In the present study 12 cases of colorectal cancer were investigated by immunohistochemical methods using three monoclonal antibodies of different specificity against urokinase. Cytoplasmic staining of strongly varying intensity was observed in all cases, with the antigen expressed most strongly in the apical and the basal regions of the cancer cells. In some cases, staining was also found in stromal elements surrounding the cancer glands. That the activator was indeed the product of the cancer cells was demonstrated by
in situ hybridization using a uPA-cDNA probe, which detected the presence of uPA-mRNA in both the basal and the apical regions of the cancer cells. A monoclonal antibody against the receptor for uPA showed similar localization. These findings indicate that the activator is expressed by the cancer cells and is not recruited by them from stromal elements.

Map of Texúpa (Oaxaca, 1579): A Study of Form and Meaning
1972
In 1577 King Philip II of Spain sent a questionnaire to all important officials in New Spain which required a detailed report on the history, geography and population of the towns in New Spain. Many officials commissioned local artists, usually Indians, to draw maps and plans for their town's report or relatión.

Sink and source populations of the invasive herb Microstegium vimineum
2003
Microstegium vimineum is an invasive annual shade tolerant grass native to Asia that has spread from Tennessee to all states east of the Mississippi and south of New York. Controlling the spread of Microstegium has been difficult especially as it spreads into less assessable areas like the interior of forests. This study examined the population dynamics of the grass, in an attempt to identify a pattern of source and sink populations. Invasive plants tend to establish themselves in areas of disturbance such as alongside roads and trails. If Microstegium growing along the roadside of a forested area were more likely to be source populations and patches growing in the interior were more likely to be sink populations, then the interior populations could conceivably be controlled by the carefully timed mowing of the roadside population of this annual. The ramifications of this study for the control of existing populations of Microstegium are not promising and a strategy of prevention becomes increasingly important. Early detection and removal and controlling roadside populations that have not spread to the interior by mowing the plants before they go to seed in the fall may be effective. However, mowing roadside populations after interior patches have been established will not necessary control the interior populations. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

First day of school tests office workers too
2000
After pricking the pupil's finger, Marilyn Peterson placed the blood sample on a hand-held device that read the child's blood- sugar levels. After learning that it was low, she immediately grabbed a juice box, instructing the girl to drink from it. At the same time, Linda Snyder, the school's data-entry clerk, was picking up the phone to report the news to the girl's mother. The pair returns to the office, the little girl carrying her tray. She eats her meal while seated behind the counter next to Peterson who doles out a host of prescription medicines to a parade of kids. \"You brought the wrong medicine,\" she informs the youngster. After a phone call and about 20 minutes, the boy's grandmother arrives at the office with a medicated inhaler attached to a collapsible breathing bag. He takes two deep breaths into the bag and returns to his classroom.

Health care
1997
Your editorial (May 23) on the federal role in health care appears to conclude that the federal role in this sector, dear to the hearts of all Canadians, is minimal. Although the federal transfers for health, postsecondary learning and education are indeed scheduled to decrease, the so-called cash floor, at least until the results of this election, remains at $12.5-billion, a pretty healthy chunk of money in most people's eyes.
