Calciphylaxis in Patients With Normal Renal Function: A Case Series and Systematic Review
2018
To define concomitant risk factors, treatment, and outcomes for patients with nonnephrogenic calciphylaxis (NNC).
A retrospective review of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) medical records (January 1, 2014, through February 29, 2016) and a systematic literature review of PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and CENTRAL (August 1, 1970, through July 31, 2016) were performed. Demographic characteristics and concomitant features were summarized and compared between patients with different lesion characteristics. Outcomes (lesion improvement and mortality) and their predictors were analyzed.
Nine patients (median age, 72 years [interquartile range (IQR), 44-82 years]; 78% women; 89% white race) were identified through MGH records. The literature review identified 107 patients (median age, 60 years [IQR, 49-72 years]; 77% women; 86% white race). Vitamin K antagonism and obesity were the most common concomitant factors. In the literature review, lower age (P<.001) and higher body mass index (P=.03) were associated with the central location of lesions, whereas vitamin K antagonism was associated with the peripheral location (P=.009). In the MGH series, median survival was 24.0 months (95% CI, 7.8-36.0 months), and 33% (95% CI, 14%-60%) had lesion improvement by 6 months. In the literature review, median survival was 4.2 months (95% CI, 1.9-5.9 months), median time to lesion improvement was 5.9 months (95% CI, 3.9-8.9 months), and none of the treatments were associated with lesion improvement or survival.
This description of concomitant traits may augment an earlier recognition of NNC. Future research is needed to investigate NNC pathogenesis and treatments.

Optimizing Micropropagation and Genetic Transformation in Gerbera
2023
Gerbera daisies (Gerbera sp.), also referred to as gerbera, are commercially important ornamental plants known for their bright flowers. In this study, petiole and leaf explants were used to study the regeneration potential of gerbera and to assess its ability for genetic transformation. Leaf explants showed regeneration potential on MS medium containing 0.1 mg/L IBA and 2.0 mg/L BAP. In particular, petiole sections showed a pronounced regeneration response, whereas no significant difference was observed in leaf blade explants as compared to petiole sections. In addition, genetic transformation of gerbera was studied using whole leaf and petiole sections. Transient expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) was observed by fluorescence microscopy, indicating successful gene transfer. However, the presence of the transgene was not confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, suggesting that transient GFP expression may not have resulted in stable integration of the foreign gene into plant cells. These results shed light on the regeneration potential of gerbera from different explants and provide insight into the challenges associated with genetic transformation. Further research is needed to optimize the transformation protocol and establish stable genetic transformation which will contribute to the development of genetically improved cultivars with desirable traits.

Credit Risk Capital Estimation Under IRB Approach for Banks in India
2018
In this paper, an attempt is made to estimate credit risk capital charge for public sector and private sector banks in India for the period from 2007–2008 to 2013–2014 under advanced internal rating based (AIRB) approach using Basel risk weight formula. The analysis brings out that credit risk capital charges would be higher for the banks with high default risk and recovery risk and vice-versa. The inter-sector comparison indicates that a substantial proportion of the overall additional capital requirement for credit risk would falls on the public sector banks. Hence, banks in this sector requires improvement in appraisal system and loan recovery mechanism to reduce burden of additional credit risk capital charges and for better-quality performance on risk adjusted basis.

It's now or never: Time for Decisive Retaliation (with Special Reference to Current Pahalgam Killings of Innocent Male Indian Tourists)
2025
The objective of the present paper is to highlight the persistent threat of Pakistan sponsored terrorism in the Kashmir valley. The paper also attempts to explore the complex security challenges posed by cross-border terrorism, fueled by external support and ideological extremism. The paper elaborates on the impact of the Pahalgam terrorist attack on local communities, tourists ,and the regional economy, and also emphasizes the need for sustained counterterrorism efforts and international cooperation to address the root causes of militancy and ensure peace and stability in the region. Who says terrorism has no religion, it has. Otherwise in the name of religion 27 human lives of Hindu tourists would not have been lost in Pahalgam. This terrorist attack must have had the support of Pakistan, otherwise Pakistan would not have been so scared of the possibility of an attack from India. From 1948 to today, thousands of attempts have been made by Pakistan to throw India into the fire of terrorism, in which there has been a huge loss of life and property. The brutal mass killings of tourists in Pahalgam are not forgivable. Therefore, it's the decisive time to teach the ultimate lesson to Pakistan. However, the government must bring back the youth who are being glamourized towards Islamic terrorism, to the mainstream and inspire them for patriotism. For this several measures have to be adopted by the government. Only then can Kashmir, which was once a heaven, be saved from becoming a hell. In conclusion suggestions have also been given to combat terrorism, to bring misguided Kashmiri youth back into the mainstream, and to improve the tourism-based economy of the region.

Default and Transition Analysis of Corporate Debt Rating
2010
Basel II implementation has made it compulsory for banks to estimate default risk for proper credit risk measurement in the bank. The present study is undertaken primarily to view the distribution of rating transitions conditional on rating of the issuers and economic activity of the issuer for the period from January 1994 to January 2009. The CRISIL's annual ratings of long term debts issued by corporate formed the basis of the analysis. It is found from the analysis that the least stable retention rate was found in low rating grades issuer and default rates, in contrast, were observed high. The analysis clearly indicates that the ratings transition is cyclical in nature and so the default probability.

Operational risk capital estimation under BIA and TSA: a study of public sector and private sector banks in India
2016
In line with Basel and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directives, all banks in India implemented basic indicator approach (BIA) of operational risk capital computation by March 2009. RBI issued guidelines on The standardised approach (TSA) of operational risk in March 2010. In this paper, an attempt is made to estimate Operational Risk Capital Charges (ORCCs) of Public Sector and Private Sector Banks in India for the period from 2003–2004 to 2012–2013 under both, BIA and TSA. The results of this study indicate that operational risk capital charges vary, depending upon bank’s size, despite of risk management systems in place. The capital computation of banks using BIA and TSA proves onerous for large banks like State Bank of India and ICICI Bank. The study also points out that capital adequacy ratio (CAR) and Tier I capital ratio of the banks have declined with introduction of additional capital charges for operational risk. Hence, this paper suggests that it is important for banks to have a well-defined business line mapping framework in place, for implementation of TSA approach.

Default Correlation Estimates For Indian Corporate
2010
This paper is an attempt to estimate default correlation within and across different rating grades and sectors for corporate in India. The default probabilities and correlations are estimated conditional on the rating of the issuer. The CRISIL’S annual ratings of long term debts issued by 578 corporate (Manufacturing Companies) formed the basis of analysis. The correlation of manufacturing companies is estimated empirically with times series of default for last sixteen years i.e. from January 1994 to January 2009. It is found from the analysis that default probabilities and correlation estimates vary with time, rating of the issuer and economic activity of the issuer. It is also found that the correlation is highest between companies within the same rating grade and industry, because of borrower and industry specific factors. The results of this study will hint, how risk capital requirement differ for different rating grades and industry depending on size of unexpected loss in the bank's credit portfolio?

Anatomical and biochemical investigations on medicinal tree Murraya koenigii Spreng
2018
Curry leaf (Curry Patta) tree is an economically important spice / medicinal tree. This investigation details morphoanatomical features of leaf and stem and explains trichome and secretory gland structures that may be associated with medicinal properties of the plant. Transverse sections of leaf and stem clearly reveal position of oil glands (schizolysigenous glands) and other constituent cells. Oil glands are situated close to the epidermis for the release of secretion. The plant body is covered by cuticle, a uniseriate epidermis and is followed by multiple layers of cortex composed of polygonal, starch grains containing parenchymatous cells. Cortex has interspersed oil glands close to the epidermis and few cells of cortex contain calcium oxalate crystals. Inner cortex contains 2-3 layers of sclerenchymatous cells seen as a red band due to safranin staining. In the leaves, oil glands are embedded in the palisade cells near the upper epidermis and the leaf margins exhibit glands opening through a pore covered by wax. Non-glandular trichomes are present on the leaf but with higher density on mid vein. These trichomes have rough surface due to the presence of micropapillae that may function as a deterrent to the insects. Scanning electron microscopy of the trichome cross section reveals central cavity. Fluorescent staining of trichomes for the presence of secondary metabolites was positive using Diphenyl boric acid-ß-ethylaminoester stain under UV light. Biochemical assays of M. koenigii leaf extract estimated total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents at 547 mg/g and 401 pmol/g, respectively. Same extract registered a TROLOX Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity of 211 pg/mL.

Migration Analysis of Indian Corporate: Rating-Based Approach
2010
Implementation of Basel II has made it compulsory for banks to study the transition and default in their rating grades to judge the quality of their credit portfolio. In the similar direction, the present study is undertaken primarily to view the migration and default rate conditional on rating of the long-term debt issuers and macroeconomic fundamentals for the period from January 1994 to January 2009. The CRISIL's annual ratings of debts issued by 578 corporate (Manufacturing Companies) formed the basis of the analysis. It is found from the analysis that the least stable retention rate was found in low rating grade issuers. The mortality (default) rate was observed low for high rated issuer and high for low rated ones. The analysis clearly indicates that the ratings transition is cyclical in nature and so the default probability. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
