Student Journal Club to Improve Cultural Humility with LGBTQ Patients
Health degree programs provide opportunities to reduce disparities in care for LGBTQ patients by exposing students to LGBTQ communities and current health issues. However, LGBTQ content is mostly absent from medical school curricula. This mixed method assessment study, conducted during the 2018 to 2019 academic year, examined the feasibility of implementing a medical student journal club focused specifically on LGBTQ health issues as a complementary training tool to support efforts to create an inclusive educational environment. Compared to the pre-test, mean response scores increased for most of the parameters including familiarity with LGBTQ healthcare issues, confidence in the ability to identify harmful medical provider practices, and reading and assessing scientific literature. Qualitative data showed increased confidence, comfort and knowledge about LGBTQ health barriers. This study offers a framework for using a journal club to provide an effective platform for enhancing students’ LGBTQ cultural humility and research literacy.
Neurobiology of Sexual Assault and Osteopathic Considerations for Trauma-Informed Care and Practice
Sexual assault is a traumatic event with potentially devastating lifelong effects on physical and emotional health. Sexual assault is associated with gastrointestinal, neurologic, and reproductive symptoms, as well as obesity, diabetes, and chronic pain. With 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experiencing some form of unwanted sexual violence in their lifetime, sexual assault is a significant public health problem that necessitates attention in the medical community. This review discusses relevant literature on the neurobiologic changes that occur as a consequence of sexual assault, such as how the brain responds during a traumatic experience and the impact of trauma on memory. Osteopathic considerations for trauma-informed care and practice and how all physicians can better serve patients with a history of sexual assault are also discussed.
Binding site elucidation and structure guided design of macrocyclic IL-17A antagonists
Interleukin-17A (IL-17A) is a principal driver of multiple inflammatory and immune disorders. Antibodies that neutralize IL-17A or its receptor (IL-17RA) deliver efficacy in autoimmune diseases, but no small-molecule IL-17A antagonists have yet progressed into clinical trials. Investigation of a series of linear peptide ligands to IL-17A and characterization of their binding site has enabled the design of novel macrocyclic ligands that are themselves potent IL-17A antagonists.
Pollution and moisture infiltration effect assessment based on data-driven analysis for aircraft heritage protection
The paper deals with monitoring and analyzing the indoor environmental parameters through remote data collection to evaluate the pollution and moisture infiltration effects on aircraft heritage conservation. First, based on the meteorological and pollution data, the moisture penetration and airborne pollution infiltration into indoor spaces of a heritage site (hangar) with stored historic aircrafts are determined. The hangar under investigation is located in the Aviation museum Kbely, Prague, Czech Republic. The determination is performed by wet/dry cycles (fluctuations) evaluation and applying ISO 11844 methodology to outdoor pollution infiltration into the interior. Next, a time of wetness (ToW) is determined indoors according to ISO 9223, rather as an environmental than a surface parameter as dewing and exceeding high humidity level (approxl RH 80% at T >0 °C) are considered. The actual moisture adsorption onto polluted surfaces of aircraft artifacts is then dependent on the hygroscopic corrosion products developed. Such an adsorption prolongs actual surface ToW. In addition to ToW, even the deposition rate of indoor pollutants, particularly sulphur dioxide and chlorides, are considered and the atmosphere corrosivity is estimated by applying the ISO standardized statistical models for aluminium. The resulting iso-corrosivity figures out the aggressiveness of the hangar environment from the point of view of aircraft material susceptibility to corrosion and degradation.
