The last mile
Melvin Mars awaits his fate on Death Row. He was one of America's most promising football stars until, aged twenty-years-old, he was arrested and convicted for the murder of his parents just as he was due to begin a very lucrative contract with the NFL. When Amos Decker, newly appointed special agent with the FBI, hears the news that Melvin was saved in the final seconds before his execution because someone has confessed to the killings, he persuades his boss to allow him to carry out an investigation into the Mars murders.
Absolutely powerful
David Baldacci's first book is first-class pulp fiction. There are few slow build-ups or heart-stopping climaxes, just a fast pace from start to finish. It is exhausting! The President's female Chief of Staff orchestrates a cover-up, but is outwitted by a Secret Service agent she has enmeshed in the conspiracy. There is, however, only one truly evil character in this book: the man with near-absolute power. Remorselessly and malevolently, the President grows from a wounded drunk to the diabolic manipulator he really is. He uses men sworn to protect him as his killers, and a woman who desires him as his sex toy. The protagonist, with the very down-to-earth name of Jack Graham, is introduced late in the book. He is a young lawyer who has just given up practising as a criminal defender to join a top corporate law firm, and the second biggest client is his fiance's father. Guess who the biggest client was married to? The murdered woman. Guess who Jack's ex-girlfriend is? The daughter of the burglar who saw what happened.
Long road to Mercy
Atlee Pine is an FBI special agent assigned to the remote wilds of the western United States. Ever since her twin sister was abducted by a notorious serial killer at age five, Atlee has spent her life hunting down those who hurt others. And she's the best at it. She could be one of the Bureau's top criminal profilers, if she didn't prefer catching criminals in the vast wilderness of the West to climbing the career ladder in the D.C. office. Her chosen mission is a lonesome one, but that suits her just fine. Now Atlee is called in to investigate the mutilated carcass of a mule found in the Grand Canyon -- and hopefully, solve the disappearance of its rider. But this isn't the only recent disappearance. In fact, it may be just the first clue, the key to unraveling a rash of other similar missing persons cases in the canyon.
Redemption
Amos Decker and his FBI partner Alex Jamison are visiting Decker's hometown of Burlington, Ohio, when he's approached by Meryl Hawkins -- the first person Decker ever arrested for murder back when he was a young detective. A dozen years in prison have left Hawkins unrecognizably aged and terminally ill, but one thing hasn't changed: he maintains he never committed the murders. Could it be possible that Decker made a mistake all those years ago? Digging into the old case, Decker finds a startling connection to a new crime that he may be able to prevent, if only he can put the pieces together quickly enough.
The Christmas train
Tom Langdon, a weary and cash-strapped journalist, is banned from flying when a particularly thorough airport security search causes him to lose his cool. Now, he must take the train if he has any chance of arriving in Los Angeles in time for Christmas with his girlfriend. To finance the trip, he sells a story about a train ride taken during the Christmas season. Thereupon begins one of the most hilarious-and heartwarming-journeys ever told. Along the way, Tom encounters a ridiculous cast of characters, unexpected romance, and an avalanche that changes everyone's Christmas plans. As the mighty Southwest Chief chugs along, Tom learns what really makes the holiday special in a remarkable novel that will charm all who read it. David Baldacci's most recent novel, Last Man Standing, has more than 650,000 copies in print and hit #3 on the New York Times bestseller list. It will be published in mass market in 9/02 and will contain a teaser chapter from The Christmas Train. There are over 30 million copies of David Baldacci's novels in print worldwide. The fallen
Amos Decker and his FBI colleague Alex Jamison are in Baronville, Pennsylvania, visiting Alex's sister and her family. It's a bleak place: a former mill and mining town with a crumbling economy and rampant opioid addiction. Decker has only been there a few hours when he stumbles on a horrific double murder scene. Then the next killing hits sickeningly close to home. With the lives of people he cares about suddenly hanging in the balance, Decker realizes that the recent string of deaths is only one small piece of a much larger scheme -- with consequences that will reach far beyond Baronville. But when one mistake could cost him everything, Decker finds that his previously infallible memory may not be so trustworthy after all.
One good deed
\"It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of do's and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job--and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment--and a stiff drink--leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman. Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him. When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison--if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.\"-- Provided by publisher.
