Magic fermions: Carroll and flat bands
A bstract The Carroll algebra is constructed as the c → 0 limit of the Poincare algebra and is associated to symmetries on generic null surfaces. In this paper, we begin investigations of Carrollian fermions or fermions defined on generic null surfaces. Due to the availability of two different (degenerate) metrics on Carroll spacetimes, there is the possibility of two different versions of Carroll Clifford algebras. We consider both possibilities and construct explicit representations of Carrollian gamma matrices and show how to build higher spacetime dimensional representations out of lower ones. Actions for Carroll fermions are constructed with these gamma matrices and the properties of these actions are investigated. We show that in condensed matter systems where the dispersion relation becomes trivial i.e. the energy is not dependent on momentum and bands flatten out, Carroll symmetry generically appears. We give explicit examples of this including that of twisted bi-layer graphene, where superconductivity appears at so called magic angles and connect this to Carroll fermions.
A tale of three — tensionless strings and vacuum structure
A bstract Within the premise of canonical quantisation, we re-examine the quantum structure of bosonic tensionless string theory. In the classical theory, the worldsheet metric degenerates and the Bondi-Metnzer-Sachs (BMS) algebra arises as the residual symmetries on fixing the tensionless equivalent of the conformal gauge. In the quantum regime, we find, on careful examination, that there are multiple ways to impose constraints to restrict the physical Hilbert space, which in turn lead to three distinct choices of tensionless vacua. We analyse these vacua in detail, commenting on various aspects like the central charges and the spectrum around each of them.
Fungal Network Effects on Coupled Thermo-Hydraulic Behavior of Sand Under Controlled Surface Heating
Drying in granular porous media is governed by coupled thermal and hydraulic processes that can be substantially modified by biological activity. This proof-of-concept study investigated how surface heating and fungal colonization influence the evolution of thermal conductivity (λ) and matric suction (ψ) as functions of volumetric water content θv in Ottawa 20/30 sand. Four treatments were examined: sterile sand at 22 °C (T1), sterile sand at 28 °C (T2), fungal-amended sand with 10% biomass and 9-day incubation (T3), and fungal-amended sand with 15% biomass and 30-day incubation (T4). Samples were instrumented to monitor θv, λ, and ψ during controlled evaporation using synchronized HYPROP and VARIOS measurements on the same specimen. Across all treatments, λ increased with θv (that is, λ declined as drying progressed), and ψ reflected the transition from hydraulically connected to disconnected pore water. Heating shortened the drying time but did not materially change the form of the λ–θv relationship or generate strong matric gradients in sterile sand. Low biomass (T3) produced thermal and hydraulic responses comparable to the heated sterile control (T2), indicating limited pore-scale modification at early colonization. In contrast, high biomass (T4) widened the effective saturation range, maintained low and nearly uniform ψ across depth, and exhibited the steepest mid-range λ–θv slope with a higher peak λ (~4 Wm−1K−1), consistent with hyphae and extracellular polymers stabilizing thin water films. A soil water retention curve (SWRC) analysis using the van Genuchten model further indicated increased water retention and delayed air entry with an increasing fungal biomass, with approximate air-entry values increasing from ~1.8 kPa (T3) to ~3.0 kPa (T4). Tests were terminated upon tensiometer cavitation rather than complete gravimetric dryness, constraining observations at very low θv. These results indicate that heating primarily affects the rate of drying, whereas fungal networks alter the pathway by preserving hydraulic and thermal continuity at relatively high θv. This behavior suggests a potential role of bio-mediated structuring in influencing near-surface thermo-hydraulic processes relevant to energy foundations, soil covers, and desiccation management in biologically active or bio-engineered soils.
Boosting to BMS
A bstract Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries, or equivalently Conformal Carroll symmetries, are intrinsically associated to null manifolds and in two dimensions can be obtained as an Inönü-Wigner contraction of the two-dimensional (2 d ) relativistic conformal algebra. Instead of performing contractions, we demonstrate in this paper how this transmutation of symmetries can be achieved by infinite boosts or degenerate linear transformations on coordinates. Taking explicit cues from the worldsheet theory of null strings, we show boosting the system is equivalent to adding a current-current deformation term to the Hamiltonian. As the strength of this deformation term reaches a critical value, the classical symmetry algebra “flows” from two copies of Virasoro to the BMS algebra. We further explore the situation where the CFT coordinates are asymmetrically transformed, and degenerate limits lead to chiral theories.
Key Laboratory Markers for Early Detection of Severe Dengue
Dengue virus is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral disease in humans. Severe dengue, defined by hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, can develop quickly in people who have warning indications such as abdominal pain, mucosal bleeding, and a significant decrease in platelet count. Laboratory markers such as hematocrit, platelet count, liver enzymes, and coagulation tests are critical for early diagnosis and prognosis. This retrospective study was carried out from January 2023 to December 2024 at a super-specialty tertiary care hospital. There were 283 adult patients with dengue with warning signs, who were categorized into 102 with platelet transfusion and 181 with no platelet transfusion. Data on patient demographics, clinical history, laboratory values, and radiological findings were systematically obtained from hospital records at the time of admission. Laboratory parameters such as white blood cell (OR = 2.137), hemoglobin (OR = 2.15), aPTT (OR = 5.815), AST2/ALT (OR = 2.431), platelet count (OR = 26.261) and NS1 (OR = 4.279) were found to be significantly associated (p < 0.01) with platelet transfusion. Similarly, an increased prothrombin time (OR = 2.432) contributed to prolonged hospital stays and the presence of ascites (OR = 5.059), gallbladder wall thickening (OR = 4.212), and pleural effusion (OR = 2.917), contributing to the severity of the dengue infection. These significant laboratory markers help with identifying patients with dengue who may develop severe dengue, requiring platelet transfusion, thereby prioritizing patient care and enabling the implementation of targeted interventions.
A Rindler road to Carrollian worldsheets
A bstract The tensionless limit of string theory has recently been formulated in terms of worldsheet Rindler physics. In this paper, by considering closed strings moving in background Rindler spacetimes, we provide a concrete exemplification of this phenomenon. We first show that strings probing the near-horizon region of a generic non-extremal blackhole become tensionless thereby linking a spacetime Carroll limit to a worldsheet Carroll limit. Then, considering strings in d -dimensional Rindler spacetime we find a Rindler structure induced on the worldsheet. Novelties, including folds, appear on the closed string worldsheet pertaining to the formation of the worldsheet horizon. The closed string becomes segmented at these folding points and different segments go into the formation of closed strings in the different Rindler wedges. The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) or the Conformal Carroll algebra emerges from the closed string Virasoro algebra as the horizon is hit. Quantum states on these accelerated worldsheets are discussed and we show the formation of boundary states from gluing conditions of the different segments of the accelerated closed string.
Symmetry resolution in non-Lorentzian field theories
A bstract Starting from the computation of Symmetry Resolved Entanglement Entropy (SREE) for boosted intervals in a two dimensional Conformal Field Theory, we compute the same in various non-Lorentzian limits, viz, Galilean and Carrollian Conformal Field Theory in same number of dimensions. We approach the problem both from a limiting perspective and by using intrinsic symmetries of respective non-Lorentzian conformal algebras. In particular, we calculate the leading order terms, logarithmic terms, and the O 1 terms and explicitly show exact compliance with equipartition of entanglement , even in the non-Lorentzian system. Keeping in mind the holographic origin of SREE for the Carrollian limit, we further compute SREE for BMS 3 -Kac-Moody, which couples a U(1) × U(1) theory with bulk gravity.
Tensionless strings in a Kalb-Ramond background
A bstract We investigate tensionless (or null) bosonic string theory with a Kalb-Ramond background turned on. In analogy with the tensile case, we find that the Kalb-Ramond field has a non-trivial effect on the spectrum only when the theory is compactified on an ( S 1 ) ⊗ d background with d ≥ 2. We discuss the effect of this background field on the tensionless spectrum constructed on three known consistent null string vacua. We elucidate further on the intriguing fate of duality symmetries in these classes of string theories when the background field is turned on.
Inhomogeneous tensionless superstrings
A bstract We construct a novel tensionless limit of Superstring theory that realises the Inhomogeneous Super Galilean Conformal Algebra (SGCA I ) as the residual symmetry in the analogue of the conformal gauge, as opposed to previous constructions of the tensionless superstring, where a smaller symmetry algebra called the Homogeneous SGCA emerged as the residual gauge symmetry on the worldsheet. We obtain various features of the new tensionless theory intrinsically as well as from a systematic limit of the corresponding features of the tensile theory. We discuss why it is desirable and also natural to work with this new tensionless limit and the larger algebra.
Tensionless tales of compactification
A bstract We study circle compactifications of tensionless bosonic string theory, both at the classical and the quantum level. The physical state condition for different representations of BMS 3 , the worldsheet residual gauge symmetry for tensionless strings, admits three inequivalent quantum vacua. We obtain the compactified mass spectrum in each of these vacua using canonical quantization and explicate their properties.
