Radish (Raphanus sativus) and Diabetes
For more than three decades, various in vitro and in vivo studies have linked radishes with diabetes, though this link has not been discussed. This review systematically addresses and summarizes the effect of radishes on diabetes. We searched the Web of Science, PubMed, and EMBASE databases for English language articles from June 1987 through May 2017 using the key words “radish” and “diabetes,” and the references from particular reports were also considered if relevant. In summary, radish has been identified as having antidiabetic effects, making it favorable for those with diabetic conditions. This may be due to its ability to enhance the antioxidant defense mechanism and reduce the accumulation of free radicals, affect hormonal-induced glucose hemostasis, promote glucose uptake and energy metabolism, and reduce glucose absorption in the intestine. However, this summary requires further confirmation in research in vivo studies and clinical trials.

Effect of aspirin on semen quality: A review

According to the PubMed data base, there are at least fifty published articles that link between aspirin and semen quality. However, such link has yet to be comprehensively discussed and summarised. This work reviews and summarises the effect of aspirin on semen quality and sperm fertility characteristics, and hence on semen fertilising ability. To achieve this contribution, an electronic search of PubMed and Scopus databases was conducted for original manuscripts, presented from January 1974 through September 2019, via the keywords “aspirin” and “acetylsalicylic acid” versus “sperm” and “semen.” In summary, there is a scientific research consensus that reveals negative effects of aspirin on semen quality. Still, clinical studies that directly examine the effect of aspirin on the main semen quality parameters are needed to support this conclusion. Mechanistically, the negative documented effect of aspirin on semen quality parameters may be attributable to decreased synthesis of testosterone, reduced function of nuclear factor kappa‐light‐chain‐enhancer of activated B cells, decreased formation of testicular prostaglandins, reduced production of seminal nitric oxide and increased oxidative injury to sperm.

Human semen quality as affected by SARS‐CoV‐2 infection: An up‐to‐date review

Revealing the effect of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection on semen quality is a dynamic priority for many healthcare providers in the field as well as subfertile patients. Therefore, the collective summary in this research approach is still highly needed, especially with the continuous increase in original publications. Here, we provide an up‐to‐date review and discussion to collectively reveal the effect of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection on human semen quality. To do this, we reviewed all articles and abstracts published in Scopus and PubMed using the keywords ‘SARS‐CoV‐2’ and ‘COVID’ versus ‘sperm’ and ‘semen’. In summary, it can be revealed that, at both symptomatic and recovery stages of infection, no investigational evidence of SARS‐CoV‐2 shedding in human semen. Also, the mainstream of the up‐to‐date published work reveals a negative impact of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection on semen quality parameters, particularly sperm count and motility. However, long‐term post‐recovery comparative studies seem very important in this particular setting.

Ginger and Testosterone

Enhancing and protecting testosterone production is one target for many scientists because of its crucial role as a primary sex hormone in males. Several in vivo trials have utilized different dietary supplements and medicinal plants to enhance testosterone production in males. Since 1991, various in-vivo, as well as basic research studies, have discovered a link between ginger (Zingiber officinale) and testosterone. However, such a link has not yet been collectively reviewed. This review systematically discusses and summarizes the effect of ginger and ginger extracts on testosterone. To achieve this contribution, we searched the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for English language articles (full texts or abstracts) from November 1991 through August 2018 using the keywords “ginger” and “Zingiber officinale” versus “testosterone”. Additionally, the references from related published articles were also reviewed, only if relevant. In conclusion, the mainstream of research that links ginger to testosterone demonstrated that ginger supplementation, particularly in oxidative stress conditions, enhances testosterone production in males. The mechanisms by which this occurs mainly by enhancing luteinizing hormone (LH) production, increasing the level of cholesterol in the testes, reducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the testes, enhancing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, normalizing blood glucose, increasing blood flow in the testes, increasing testicular weight, and recycling testosterone receptors. However, the effect of ginger on testosterone is not yet confirmed in humans. Therefore, clinical studies in this context of research are imperative.

Background: The relationship between smoking and human health is a well-researched and continuously evolving field. The impact of smoking on semen quality, and consequently on male fertility, has also been explored, though most studies have primarily focused on cigarette smoking rather than hookah smoking.Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare the effects of hookah and cigarette smoking on semen parameters in a sample of Jordanian males.Methods: A total of 558 participants were prospectively recruited, including 300 cigarette smokers, 95 hookah smokers, and 163 nonsmokers (control). Semen analysis was performed approximately 1 h after ejaculation following the World Health Organization guidelines (2021).Results: Interestingly, semen volume was significantly decreased in hookah smokers (p=0.0097) but not in cigarette smokers when compared to the control group. No significant differences were observed in semen volume, progressive sperm motility, total motility, sperm count, sperm morphology (p=0.2714, p=0.8752, p=0.6671, p=8614, and p=0.9261, respectively), and sperm vitality between hookah and cigarette smokers. Furthermore, except for semen volume, these semen parameters were not statistically different in both tested groups when compared to the control group.Conclusions: Hookah smokers demonstrated lower semen volume compared to the control group. Additionally, no significant differences were found in sperm count, percentage of sperm motility, normal forms of sperm, and sperm vitality between hookah and cigarette smokers or between these groups and the control group.

Exploring associations between pregnancy cravings and sociodemographic, lifestyle and health factors: insights from a cross-sectional population study in Jordan

ObjectiveTo explore the potential associations between pregnancy cravings and various sociodemographic, lifestyle and health factors.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingPopulation-based study in Jordan.ParticipantsA total of 500 women who had children and experienced pregnancy cravings were included.Primary and secondary outcome measuresPregnancy cravings are prevalent among Jordanian women and associated with some sociodemographic, lifestyle and health factors.ResultsThe results showed that 75.40% (377/500) of women experienced food cravings, with 40.6% and 29.1% of them having iron deficiency and vitamin D deficiency, respectively. The most commonly craved food items were sweets (17.2%, 86/500) and salts (22.2%, 115/500), while less than 1.0% of women craved non-food items. No significant correlation (p>0.05) was found between food cravings and the gender of the babies. Significant associations were found between food cravings and the mother’s educational level (p=0.023), weight loss (p<0.001) and diseases such as anaemia (p=0.01).ConclusionPregnancy cravings, particularly for food items, with sweets and salts being the most commonly craved, are prevalent among Jordanian women and are associated with the mother’s educational level, changes in weight and the presence of anaemia. Additionally, the study found that iron and vitamin D deficiencies are prevalent health issues among women experiencing these cravings in Jordan. This research has important implications, emphasising the pressing need for targeted nutritional interventions and healthcare strategies to address identified deficiencies and improve maternal health outcomes in the region.

Vitamin B12 and Semen Quality

Various studies have revealed the effects of vitamin B12, also named cobalamin, on semen quality and sperm physiology; however, these studies collectively are still unsummarized. Here, we systematically discuss and summarize the currently understood role of vitamin B12 on semen quality and sperm physiology. We searched the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases for only English language articles or abstracts from September 1961 to March 2017 (inclusive) using the key words “vitamin B12” and “cobalamin” versus “sperm”. Certain relevant references were included to support the empirical as well as the mechanistic discussions. In conclusion, the mainstream published work demonstrates the positive effects of vitamin B12 on semen quality: first, by increasing sperm count, and by enhancing sperm motility and reducing sperm DNA damage, though there are a few in vivo system studies that have deliberated some adverse effects. The beneficial effects of vitamin B12 on semen quality may be due to increased functionality of reproductive organs, decreased homocysteine toxicity, reduced amounts of generated nitric oxide, decreased levels of oxidative damage to sperm, reduced amount of energy produced by spermatozoa, decreased inflammation-induced semen impairment, and control of nuclear factor-κB activation. However, additional research, mainly clinical, is still needed to confirm these positive effects.

Traditionally, the success of a researcher is assessed by the number of publications he or she publishes in peer-reviewed, indexed, high impact journals. This essential yardstick, often referred to as the impact of a specific researcher, is assessed through the use of various metrics. While researchers may be acquainted with such matrices, many do not know how to use them to enhance their careers. In addition to these metrics, a number of other factors should be taken into consideration to objectively evaluate a scientist's profile as a researcher and academician. Moreover, each metric has its own limitations that need to be considered when selecting an appropriate metric for evaluation. This paper provides a broad overview of the wide array of metrics currently in use in academia and research. Popular metrics are discussed and defined, including traditional metrics and article-level metrics, some of which are applied to researchers for a greater understanding of a particular concept, including varicocele that is the thematic area of this Special Issue of Asian Journal of Andrology. We recommend the combined use of quantitative and qualitative evaluation using judiciously selected metrics for a more objective assessment of scholarly output and research impact.

Caffeine increased progressive motility of human spermatozoa in normozoospermic and asthenozoospermic semen samples and enhanced activity of seminal creatine kinase

Even though the effect of caffeine on humans' health has been revealed in various research studies, its effect on semen quality has yet to be well explained. Here, we measured the effect of caffeine at 1, 5, 10 and 20 mM on motility of human spermatozoa in normozoospermic and asthenozoospermic semen samples, level of seminal nitric oxide, chelation of seminal calcium ions and activity of seminal creatine kinase. Fifty‐one normozoospermic and ten asthenozoospermic semen samples were recruited in this study. Sperm motility was evaluated by Makler counter, and seminal nitric oxide, seminal‐free calcium and activity of seminal creatine kinase were measured spectrophotometrically. Caffeine at 10 mM significantly (p < .05) increased progressive motility of spermatozoa in both tested groups. Also, caffeine significantly increased (p < .05) activity of creatine kinase and insignificantly (p > .05) altered nitric oxide and free calcium levels in seminal plasma. In conclusion, progressive motility of human spermatozoa was found to be higher in the presence of caffeine at 10 mM in normozoospermic and asthenozoospermic semen samples; this increase, albeit partially, could be due to increased activity of seminal creatine kinase, but not to increased production of nitric oxide or chelation of free calcium ions.

Aspirin decreases human sperm motility and vitality, chelates seminal calcium, but insignificantly reduces seminal nitric oxide production

Lately, there is a systematic research consensus that reveals adverse effects of aspirin on semen quality characteristics; however, such consensus is lacking further confirmation by human studies. Therefore, here, we asked whether sperm motility and vitality are affected in the presence of aspirin at 0.1 and 1 mM in the ejaculated semen, and whether such effect may be due to an alteration in seminal calcium ions or seminal nitric oxide production. Forty‐three semen samples from different normozoospermic men were recruited in this study. Sperm motility was measured by Makler counting chamber, and sperm vitality was measured by Eosin test. Calcium chelating effect of aspirin and seminal nitric oxide production was measured spectrophotometrically. Aspirin at both tested concentrations significantly (p < .05) reduced progressive grade‐a motility and vitality of spermatozoa. Additionally, aspirin was found to have significant ability (p < .05) to bind seminal calcium ions, but insignificantly reduced the amount of seminal nitric oxide. In conclusion, sperm motility and vitality were reduced in the presence of aspirin at 0.1 and 1 mM in semen. Such reduction may be attributable to the ability of aspirin to chelate seminal calcium ions, but not to an alteration in the amount of nitric oxide produced.
