FDR ECH2O sensor performance in Spodosols
Frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) is widely used to measure the soil water contents. However, the soil composition effects on FDR calibration has to be quantified to reduce the need for further calibration. Our objectives were to (1) evaluate the accuracy of EC-5 for measuring soil water content in sandy soils and (2) develop soil-specific sensor calibration curve. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in a Sopossol profile (07º 37’ 30’’ S, 34º 57’ 30’’ W) representative of region sugarcane grown, in northeast of Brazil. Regression statistics analysis showed good accuracy and RMSE = 0.01 m3 m-3, while without specific calibration the RMSE = 0.06 m3 m-3. The EC-5 sensor should be subjected to field-specific calibration in sandy soils due to the low field capacity and water content during the growing season.
The Role of Toposequence and Underground Drainage in Variation of Groundwater and Salinity Levels in Irrigated Areas
In irrigated areas around the world, the recommendation for the use of subsurface drainage is also associated with controlling salinity problems. Due to the high implementation cost, the search for solutions that make this requirement more flexible is necessary. Among the options to be investigated is the hypothesis that the height and salinity of the water table in plots located at the highest points of a toposequence are lower and do not compromise plant development, even without underground drainage systems. In this context, the present work was developed to monitor and evaluate the variation in water level or mottling over twelve months, as well as to measure and analyze the electrical conductivity and average pH of the water table during this period and its possible impact on plants. For this purpose, three lots in toposequence were selected in the Senador Nilo Coelho Public Irrigation Project, Petrolina—PE, with previously defined characteristics: soil classification (Plinthic Yellow—Ultisol), crop planted (Mangifera indica L.) and irrigation system used (micro-sprinkler). Precipitation, reference evapotranspiration and volume of water applied via irrigation were monitored by an automatic weather station and hydrometers in each lot. In each plot, nine observation wells were installed, distributed in a grid, with the aim of make monthly measurements of the water table level or mottling. The electrical conductivity and pH of the groundwater were also measured to obtain the average monthly value for each lot. Illustrative 3D maps of the water table level in relation to the ground surface were created using the simple kriging method, in the UTM SIRGAS 2000 24S projection system. The absence and presence of groundwater in the upper and lower hillslope lots, respectively, were favored by the toposequence. The decision to install underground drainage or not can be made on a case-by-case basis; this must take into account, among other aspects, changes in physical characteristics along the soil profile, possible occurrence of mottling, the quality of water for irrigation, the irrigation management adopted and the position of the lot in the toposequence.
Sexual dysfunction in women who received breast cancer treatment: a cross-sectional study
Breast cancer has a major impact on global public health. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of sexual dysfunction in women who received breast cancer treatment (BCT). Data were collected from sexually active adult women in Natal, Brazil, who had completed at least one year of BCT. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to assess sexual function in 88 participants. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction was found to be 76.1%, with the most affected domains being sexual desire and vaginal lubrication. Factors associated with sexual dysfunction included difficulty adjusting to post-surgery body changes, pre-existing comorbidities, and the absence of breast reconstruction. These findings highlight the significant impact of BCT on sexual function and underscore the need for targeted prevention and treatment interventions to address the sexual health needs of women undergoing this experience.
Dementia and Cognitive Impairment in an Urban Multiethnic Indigenous Community from Amazonas
Introduction: Studies about dementia in indigenous communities is still scarce worldwide, especially in low-middle income countries, limiting timely intervention in minority groups. Our research aimed to bridge this gap by determining the prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment not dementia (CIND), and the associated factors, in a multiethnic indigenous community in Manaus, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study. Was evaluated the cognitive and functional performances of 141 Indigenous individuals (aged 50 and above). A panel of dementia neurologist experts independently analyzed cognitive (Mini-Mental State Exam-MMSE, Brief Cognitive Screening Battery, verbal fluency), functional (Pfeffer questionnaire) performances, and depression symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale) to classify participants as cognitively unimpaired, CIND and dementia. Results: CIND rate was 11.3% and 12.8% for dementia. None of the participants classified as CIND had a prior diagnosis, and only three out of 18 participants with dementia had a diagnosis. Stratified analysis showed that age (p=0.017) and lower education (p= 0.047) were associated with higher CIND and dementia. However, only age was significantly associated with dementia in the regression models (OR= 1.078; 95%CI 1.011-1.149). Sex, living in extreme poverty, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, or excessive alcohol use were not linked to CIND or dementia. Conclusion: The Indigenous community of Manaus exhibited higher rates of dementia and CIND than national and global estimates. These findings may set the stage for additional research into the interplay of social, economic, biological, and behavioral factors affecting dementia risk in underrepresented groups such as Indigenous communities.
Assessment of Malnutrition in Heart Failure and Its Relationship with Clinical Problems in Brazilian Health Services
Malnutrition in heart failure (HF) is frequent and associated with a worse prognosis. Due to differences in investment and the profile of those assisted, the objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of malnutrition in hospitalized patients with HF and its association with clinical outcomes in the public and private health systems. Methodology: A cross-sectional study, with 247 volunteers hospitalized with HF in three public hospitals and one private hospital in Aracaju, SE, Brazil. A subjective global nutritional assessment (SGA) and mini nutritional assessment (MNA) were performed. Results: Sample with 72.5% users of the public health system and 75.3% with malnutrition (public = 74.9%; private = 76.5%; p = 0.793). Regardless of the healthcare system, hospital stay (>14 days) was longer (p = 0.020) among those with malnutrition (48.4%) than well-nourished patients (29.5%). Malnutrition in the public system had higher mortality (7.5%; 5.8%; p < 0.001) and hospital transfer rate (21.1%; 0.0%; p < 0.001) than those in the private system. Death after discharge was observed only in the public system (p = 0.039). Conclusion: Malnutrition was frequent in both systems and was associated with longer hospital stays and, in the public hospital, in-hospital death and transfers.
Food Patterns of Hospitalized Patients with Heart Failure and Their Relationship with Demographic, Economic and Clinical Factors in Sergipe, Brazil
Background: The high rates of hospitalization and mortality caused by Heart Failure (HF) have attracted the attention of health sectors around the world. Dietary patterns that involve food combinations and preparations with synergistic or antagonistic effects of different dietary components can influence the worsening and negative outcomes of this disease. Objectives: To describe the dietary patterns of patients hospitalized for HF decompensation and associate them with demographic, economic, and clinical factors, and the type of care provided in Sergipe. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study that is part of the Congestive Heart Failure Registry (VICTIM-CHF)” of Aracaju/SE. Prospective data collection took place with all patients hospitalized between April 2018 and February 2021 in cardiology referral hospitals, 2 public and 1 private. The data collected were sociodemographic, clinical, lifestyle, anthropometric and food consumption variables. Daily dietary intake was estimated by applying a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The extraction of dietary patterns, by exploratory factor analysis, was performed after grouping the foods according to the nutritional value and form of preparation into 34 groups. To assess the association between the factorial scores for adherence to the standards and the variables studied, the Mann-Whitney U test was applied. Linear regressions were also performed, considering the dietary pattern (one for each pattern) as a dependent variable. Results: The study included 240 patients hospitalized for HF decompensation, most of them elderly (mean age 61.12 ± 1.06 years), male (52.08%) and attended by the Unified Health System—SUS (67.5%). Three dietary patterns were identified, labeled “traditional” (typical foods of the Brazilian northeastern population added to ultra-processed foods), “Mediterranean” (foods recommended by the Mediterranean diet) and “dual” (healthy foods combined with fast and easy-to-prepare foods like snacks, bread, sweets and desserts). Adherence to the “traditional” pattern was greater among men (p < 0.031) and non-diabetics (p < 0.003). The “Mediterranean” was more consumed by the elderly (p < 0.001), with partners (p = 0.001) and a lower income (p < 0.001), assisted by the SUS (p < 0.001) and without hypertension (p = 0,04). The “dual” diet pattern had greater adherence by the elderly (p < 0.001), self-declared non-black (p = 0.012), with higher income (p < 0.001), assisted in the private sector (p < 0.001) and with less impaired functional capacity (p = 0.037). It was also observed that being female (p = 0.031) and being older reduced the average scores of performing the “traditional” pattern (p = 0.002). Regarding the type of service, being from the public service reduced the average scores for adhering to the “dual” pattern (p = 0.008). Conclusions: Three dietary patterns representative of the population were found, called traditional, Mediterranean and dual, which were associated with demographic, economic and clinical factors. Thus, these standards must be considered in the development of nutritional strategies and recommendations in order to increase adherence to diets that are more protective against cardiovascular diseases.
