Developing SME performance management practices: interventions for improving productivity
PurposeThe paper is a proof of concept (PoC) intervention study aimed for developing performance management (PM) practices in manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the longer-term aim enabling the SMEs to improve their productivity. The intervention was designed and deployed by a collaborative quartet of academics, management consultants, accountancy firm and a commercial bank manager.Design/methodology/approachThe paper firstly musters a set of initialising PM practices aligned to productivity improvement. These are utilised to design a knowledge transfer intervention for deployment with a set of manufacturing SMEs incorporating some associated productivity tools. The evaluation of the intervention utilised a case study approach founded on a logic model of the intervention to assess the development of the PM practices.FindingsThe intervention contributed to a partial development of the mustered practices and the productivity diagnostic based on the multi-factor productivity (MFP) abstraction and a data extraction protocol had the strongest impact. The study revealed the importance of the three interlaced factors: Depth of engagement, feedback opportunities and the intervention gradient (the increase of independent action from the participating SME's and the diminishment of the external intervention effort).Research limitations/implicationsThe case study is based on a limited number of individual SME's, and within just the manufacturing sector.Practical implicationsSME businesses will require a more sustained programme of interventions than this pilot to develop PM capability, and depth of engagement within the SME is critical. Professional stakeholders can be utilised in recruitment of firms for intervention programmes. Business can start developing PM capability prior to PMS implementation using the tools from this programme.Originality/valueThe productivity diagnostic tool, based on a synthesis of MFP and the performance pyramid, an array of potential initialising practices for PM capability and discovery of potential mechanisms for PM practice development.
The Significance of Metasomatism in the Formation of the Tanbreez REE Deposit in South Greenland
The layering of the lower layered kakortokite in the per-alkaline Ilímaussaq complex has been interpreted as an orthocumulus rock. Petrographic observation and mineral chemical data from the topmost and the lowest part of the layered kakortokite show signs that indicate massive metasomatic overprint. The occurrence of globular structures in the top part of kakortokite and fine-grained inclusions in the lower layered kakortokite are interpreted as the precursor of kakortokite and the result of a subsolidus reaction between a fluid phase and the underlying rock, respectively. Two different processes led to the formation of kakortokite, a precursor where a clear repetitive layering occurs and a chemical reaction between a fluid phase and the underlying rock where different kakortokite types are randomly interstratified. Both metasomatic events led to a higher rare earth element (REE) grade of the original REE mineralization.
Co-Teaching: The Importance of Professional Development
Purpose. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine the impact co-teaching professional development has had on teacher attitude and classroom practices in a secondary, middle school setting. Methodology. This qualitative case study design included the use of best practice checklists and personal interviews. Educators from a middle school in the California Bay Area were the target population for the case study. Educators were asked to rate their current co-teaching practice and respond to a series of interview questions. Limitations of the study included sample size and population. Other general limitations included respondents’ answering the checklists and interview questions with fidelity and the extent to which collected research findings can be generalized to other districts and schools. Findings. Findings of this study reinforce previous research on co-teaching, including the components for effective co-teaching relationships, common planning time, administrative support, and similar teacher pedagogy. Findings concluded that the professional development had a positive impact on educator attitude and co-teaching practices. The professional development served to remove common barriers identified by research and the participants of this study. The analysis of best practices checklists showed general education teachers rated themselves lower in the participation of co-teaching practices than both special education teachers and administrators. Conclusions. This study contributed to the research by identifying professional development that had an impact on educator attitude and classroom practice. Educational leaders can use this model to build new or improve existing co-teaching professional development opportunities through consideration of the components and strategies presented in this study. Recommendations. Recommendations for future research include the duplication of the research design in order to explore the impact of professional development on any number of district or school initiatives. Future inquiries may explore identifying the key personality types most prevalent among successful co-teachers. Teacher preparation programs could be evaluated to determine if teachers are adequately prepared for engaging in co-teaching partnerships.

A Sublinear Space, Polynomial Time Algorithm for Directed s-t Connectivity
Directed s-t connectivity is the problem of detecting whether there is a path from vertex s to vertex t in a directed graph. We present the first known deterministic sublinear space, polynomial time algorithm for directed s-t connectivity. For $n$-vertex graphs, our algorithm can use as little as $n/2^{\\Theta(\\sqrt{\\log n})}$ space while still running in polynomial time.
Renters forced to leave house after septic tank fails
If Keeton had failed to take either of those options, county health inspector Daniel Ortiz said, the Health Department would have had no choice but to take him to environmental court, where a judge could have ordered his home condemned.
Homeowner mired in bureaucracy (w/video)
[...] six years later, the Cumberland County Health Department has given Keeton a choice: pump the sewage from his septic tank and haul it away, or watch his house get condemned. Health concerns Keeton said his septic tank became an issue again in August, after a neighbor complained that raw sewage bubbling up in his backyard after heavy rains was endangering her daughter's health.
Maynor decision may affect 2 others
In a ruling published Monday, the appeals court ordered Maynor to be resentenced, partly because Boyle did not adequately explain why he thought Maynor deserved a prison term three times longer than federal sentencing guidelines recommended.
Short Random Walks on Graphs
The short-term behavior of random walks on graphs is studied, in particular, the rate at which a random walk discovers new vertices and edges. A conjecture by Linial that the expected time to find $\\mathcal{N}$ distinct vertices is $O(\\mathcal{N}^3 )$ is proved. In addition, upper bounds of $O(\\mathcal{M}^2 )$ on the expected time to traverse $\\mathcal{M}$ edges and of $O(\\mathcal{M}\\mathcal{N})$ on the expected time to either visit $\\mathcal{N}$ vertices or traverse $\\mathcal{M}$ edges (whichever comes first) are proved.
