College student sleep quality and mental and physical health are associated with food insecurity in a multi-campus study
To assess the relationship between food insecurity, sleep quality, and days with mental and physical health issues among college students. An online survey was administered. Food insecurity was assessed using the ten-item Adult Food Security Survey Module. Sleep was measured using the nineteen-item Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mental health and physical health were measured using three items from the Healthy Days Core Module. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to assess the relationship between food insecurity, sleep quality, and days with poor mental and physical health. Twenty-two higher education institutions. College students (n 17 686) enrolled at one of twenty-two participating universities. Compared with food-secure students, those classified as food insecure (43·4 %) had higher PSQI scores indicating poorer sleep quality (P < 0·0001) and reported more days with poor mental (P < 0·0001) and physical (P < 0·0001) health as well as days when mental and physical health prevented them from completing daily activities (P < 0·0001). Food-insecure students had higher adjusted odds of having poor sleep quality (adjusted OR (AOR): 1·13; 95 % CI 1·12, 1·14), days with poor physical health (AOR: 1·01; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·02), days with poor mental health (AOR: 1·03; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·03) and days when poor mental or physical health prevented them from completing daily activities (AOR: 1·03; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·04). College students report high food insecurity which is associated with poor mental and physical health, and sleep quality. Multi-level policy changes and campus wellness programmes are needed to prevent food insecurity and improve student health-related outcomes.
Using Campinha-Bacote's Framework to Examine Cultural Competence from an Interdisciplinary International Service Learning Program
The purpose of this study was to investigate an interdisciplinary international service learning program and its impact on student sense of cultural awareness and competence using the Campinha-Bacote's (2002) framework of cultural competency model. Seven undergraduate and one graduate student from Human Development and Nutrition Science disciplines participated in the program. Reflections from a synthesis paper post-travel were analyzed using an inductive approach. Six themes emerged from the reflective journals and were applied to Campinha-Bacote's cultural competency constructs. Participating and learning together while reflecting helped deepen and progress this process for ISL students. Overall, the experience proved to be an effective educational tool for sensitizing students towards cultural competency within interdisciplinary programs.
Ethics of Internet research: Contesting the human subjects research model
The human subjects research model is increasingly invoked in discussions of ethics for Internet research. Here we seek to question the widespread application of this model, critiquing it through the two themes of space and textual form. Drawing on our experience of a previous piece of research, we highlight the implications of re-considering the textuality of the Internet in addition to the spatial metaphors that are more commonly deployed to describe Internet activity. We argue that the use of spatial metaphors in descriptions of the Internet has shaped the adoption of the human subjects research model. Whilst this model is appropriate in some areas of Internet research such as email communication, we feel that researchers, when navigating the complex terrain of Internet research ethics, need also to consider the Internet as cultural production of texts. Moving Toward Healthy
This study utilized participatory and potentially empowering qualitative research methods of photo-elicitation and face-to-face interviews to investigate food choices of mothers living with their children in a residential substance use disorder recovery program. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with nine women (25–40 years) living in a residential substance use disorder recovery program in the Southeastern United States. Each audio recorded and transcribed interview was coded individually before collectively developing a consensual version of the codebook and identifying themes. The recovering women in this study expressed a new or renewed desire to “eat healthy” and voiced concerns about the nutritional value of foods. Food choices were influenced by their children’s nutritional needs and food preferences, their own food preferences and habits, the financial resources available to them, their personal food preparation self-efficacy and skills, and the limitations inherent in residential recovery. Understanding food choices benefits both recovering parents and their children.

Risk of COVID‐19 Hospitalization and Protection Associated With mRNA Vaccination Among US Adults With Psychiatric Disorders
Background Although psychiatric disorders have been associated with reduced immune responses to other vaccines, it remains unknown whether they influence COVID‐19 vaccine effectiveness (VE). This study evaluated risk of COVID‐19 hospitalization and estimated mRNA VE stratified by psychiatric disorder status. Methods In a retrospective cohort analysis of the VISION Network in four US states, the rate of laboratory‐confirmed COVID‐19‐associated hospitalization between December 2021 and August 2022 was compared across psychiatric diagnoses and by monovalent mRNA COVID‐19 vaccination status using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Among 2,436,999 adults, 22.1% had ≥1 psychiatric disorder. The incidence of COVID‐19‐associated hospitalization was higher among patients with any versus no psychiatric disorder (394 vs. 156 per 100,000 person‐years, p < 0.001). Any psychiatric disorder (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.27; 95% CI, 1.18–1.37) and mood (aHR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.15–1.36), anxiety (aHR, 1.33, 95% CI, 1.22–1.45), and psychotic (aHR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.14–1.74) disorders were each significant independent predictors of hospitalization. Among patients with any psychiatric disorder, aHRs for the association between vaccination and hospitalization were 0.35 (95% CI, 0.25–0.49) after a recent second dose, 0.08 (95% CI, 0.06–0.11) after a recent third dose, and 0.33 (95% CI, 0.17–0.66) after a recent fourth dose, compared to unvaccinated patients. Corresponding VE estimates were 65%, 92%, and 67%, respectively, and were similar among patients with no psychiatric disorder (68%, 92%, and 79%). Conclusion Psychiatric disorders were associated with increased risk of COVID‐19‐associated hospitalization. However, mRNA vaccination provided similar protection regardless of psychiatric disorder status, highlighting its benefit for individuals with psychiatric disorders.
Gaps and barriers along the North Carolina agri-food value chain
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to formulate an exhaustive list of the issues, gaps, and barriers at each level of the agri-food value chain in North Carolina (NC), and second, to identify the issues of greatest importance to its members. Design/methodology/approach – This research employed the Delphi technique in two stages of input. The first round of input was designed to create a comprehensive list of issues for each of nine “stages” of the agri-food value chain. In round two, the issues were prioritized. Findings – The top ten responses of each stage were aggregated into themes that represent the most critical issues identified by respondents: connectedness within the value chain, access to markets and marketing, affordability/availability of food and food distribution, farm profitability, societal awareness, and education about healthy, local food, and supporting institutions. Originality/value – The findings could be used by practitioners to inspire innovation in food-related products, programs, processes, organization, and marketing. The findings can help farmers, institutions, food distributors, policy makers, and other members of the agri-food value chain to make decisions about food distribution and access in NC and in other states facing similar issues and circumstances. The findings of this research also have further reaching implications, such as the connectivity of members along the agri-food value chain, the impact of a strong agri-food value chain on agritourism and the potential value of state marketing initiatives.
