Macroscopic Electromagnetic Cooperative Network-Enhanced MXene/Ni Chains Aerogel-Based Microwave Absorber with Ultra-Low Matching Thickness
2022
HighlightsA ficus microcarpa-like magnetic aerogel with macroscopical electromagnetic cooperative effect was fabricated through highly oriented self-assembly engineering. The highly oriented Ni chains with unique macroscopic morphology (~ 1 cm in length) were achieved for the first time via a special magnetic field-induced growth. The electromagnetic cooperative networks with uninterrupted and dual pathways spread through the entire aerogel skeleton, resulting in a remarkable electromagnetic wave performance at an ultrathin thickness of 1 mm.Electromagnetic cooperative strategy has been presented as a mainstream approach that can effectively optimize the matching thickness of dielectric loss dominant system. However, it is still challenging for dielectric–magnetic loss coexisting-type absorber to develop electromagnetic wave (EMW) performance with ultra-low matching thickness (≤ 1 mm). Breaking the limitation of traditional electromagnetic response at microscopic/mesoscopic scale, a ficus microcarpa-like magnetic aerogel with macroscopical electromagnetic cooperative effect was fabricated through highly oriented self-assembly engineering. The highly oriented Ni chains with unique macroscopic morphology (~ 1 cm in length) were achieved via a special magnetic field-induced growth. Strong magnetic coupling was observed in the Ni chains confirmed by the micromagnetic simulation. The deductive calculation validates that maintaining high value of electromagnetic parameters at high frequencies is the prerequisites of ultrathin absorber. The electromagnetic cooperative networks with uninterrupted and dual pathways spread through the entire aerogel skeleton, resulting in the impressive permittivity even at high frequencies. Consequently, the aerogel exhibits a remarkable EMW performance at an ultrathin thickness of 1 mm. Thus, based on the modulation of electromagnetic parameters, this work proposed a macroscopic ordered structure with the electromagnetic cooperative effect useful to develop a suitable strategy for achieving ultrathin EMW absorbers.

Twenty years passed since the discovery of superconductivity in MgB
2
. Although there is much progress, the use of superconductors, in general, and of MgB
2
in particular, remains limited. On the other hand, in the last 10 years MgB
2
became a material of great interest for emergent applications, such as propellants, batteries, and catalysis, as a source material to obtain 2D borophene-like materials (e.g. BH borophane), biomedical field (taking advantage of its promising antimicrobial, antitumoral, biodegradable, and biocompatible features), heritage and ecology being the latest trends. These new directions place MgB
2
as a material well integrated with nature cycles that can promote the concept of one eco- and health-friendly, with many envisioned practical purposes. This type of material is at the core of a clean and sustainable economy promoting new developments, boosting the older ones (e.g. superconductivity) and minimizing the costs for the transition to new and modern materials and technologies. In this work, we review recent trends and new directions of MgB
2
applications and discuss their potential impact.

Biodegradable blends and nanocomposites were produced from polylactic acid (PLA), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and cellulose nanocrystals (NC) by a single step reactive blending process using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a cross-linking agent. With the aim of gaining more insight into the impact of processing methods upon the morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of these nanocomposites, three different processing techniques were employed: compression molding, extrusion, and 3D printing. The addition of DCP improved interfacial adhesion and the dispersion of NC in nanocomposites as observed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The carbonyl index calculated from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed increased crystallinity after DCP addition in PLA/PHB and PLA/PHB/NC, also confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analyses. NC and DCP showed nucleating activity and favored the crystallization of PLA, increasing its crystallinity from 16% in PLA/PHB to 38% in DCP crosslinked blend and to 43% in crosslinked PLA/PHB/NC nanocomposite. The addition of DCP also influenced the melting-recrystallization processes due to the generation of lower molecular weight products with increased mobility. The thermo-mechanical characterization of uncross-linked and cross-linked PLA/PHB blends and nanocomposites showed the influence of the processing technique. Higher storage modulus values were obtained for filaments obtained by extrusion and 3D printed meshes compared to compression molded films. Similarly, the thermogravimetric analysis showed an increase of the onset degradation temperature, even with more than 10 °C for PLA/PHB blends and nanocomposites after extrusion and 3D-printing, compared with compression molding. This study shows that PLA/PHB products with enhanced interfacial adhesion, improved thermal stability, and mechanical properties can be obtained by the right choice of the processing method and conditions using NC and DCP for balancing the properties.

Significant advances in graphene-based materials have facilitated the development of various composites structures in a diverse range of industry sectors. At present, the preparation of graphene-added materials is mainly developed through traditional methods. However, in recent years, additive manufacturing emerged as a promising approach that enables the printing of complex objects in a layer-by-layer fashion, without the need for moulds or machining equipment. This paper reviews the most recent reports on graphene-based photopolymerizable resins developed for stereolithography (SLA), with particular consideration for medical applications. The characteristics of the SLA technology, the most suitable raw materials and formulations and the properties of final 3D products are described. Throughout, a specific focus is placed on the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the final 3D-printed object. Finally, remaining challenges and future directions are also discussed.

Pristine high-density bulk disks of MgB2 with added hexagonal BN (10 wt.%) were prepared using spark plasma sintering. The BN-added samples are machinable by chipping them into desired geometries. Complex shapes of different sizes can also be obtained by the 3D printing of polylactic acid filaments embedded with MgB2 powder particles (10 wt.%). Our present work aims to assess antimicrobial activity quantified as viable cells (CFU/mL) vs. time of sintered and 3D-printed materials. In vitro antimicrobial tests were performed against the bacterial strains Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus faecium DSM 13590, and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212; and the yeast strain Candida parapsilosis ATCC 22019. The antimicrobial effects were found to depend on the tested samples and microbes, with E. faecium being the most resistant and E. coli the most susceptible.

We report for the first time on the antimicrobial activity of MgB2 powders produced via the Reactive Liquid Infiltration (RLI) process. Samples with MgB2 wt.% ranging from 2% to 99% were obtained and characterized, observing different levels of grain aggregation and of impurity phases. Their antimicrobial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA 1026, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. A general correlation is observed between the antibacterial activity and the MgB2 wt.%, but the sample microstructure also appears to be very important. RLI-MgB2 powders show better performances compared to commercial powders against microbial strains in the planktonic form, and their activity against biofilms is also very similar.

The intersection of the bone tissue reconstruction and additive manufacturing fields promoted the advancement to a prerequisite and new feedstock resource for high-performance bone-like-scaffolds manufacturing. In this paper, the proposed strategy was directed toward the use of bovine-bone-derived hydroxyapatite (HA) for surface properties enhancement and mechanical features reinforcement of the poly(lactic acid) matrix for composite filaments extrusion. The involvement of completely naturally derived materials in the technological process was based on factors such as sustainability, low cost, and a facile and green synthesis route. After the HA isolation and extraction from bovine bones by thermal processing, milling, and sorting, two dependent parameters—the HA particles size (<40 μm, <100 μm, and >125 μm) and ratio (0–50% with increments of 10%)—were simultaneously modulated for the first time during the incorporation into the polymeric matrix. The resulting melt mixtures were divided for cast pellets and extruded filaments development. Based on the obtained samples, the study was further designed to examine several key features by complementary surface–volume characterization techniques. Hence, the scanning electron microscopy and micro-CT results for all specimens revealed a uniform and homogenous dispersion of HA particles and an adequate adhesion at the ceramic/polymer interface, without outline pores, sustained by the shape and surface features of the synthesized ceramic particles. Moreover, an enhanced wettability (contact angle in the ~70−21° range) and gradual mechanical takeover were indicated once the HA ratio increased, independent of the particles size, which confirmed the benefits and feasibility of evenly blending the natural ceramic/polymeric components. The results correlation led to the selection of optimal technological parameters for the synthesis of adequate composite filaments destined for future additive manufacturing and biomedical applications.

The proposed strategy for the extrusion of printable composite filaments follows the favourable association of biogenic hydroxyapatite (HA) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) as reinforcement materials for a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix. HA particles were chosen in the <40 μm range, while GNP were selected in the micrometric range. During the melt–mixing incorporation into the PLA matrix, both reinforcement ratios were simultaneously modulated for the first time at different increments. Cylindrical composite pellets/test samples were obtained only for the mechanical and wettability behaviour evaluation. The Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy depicted two levels of overlapping structures due to the solid molecular bond between all materials. Scanning electron microscopy and surface wettability and mechanical evaluations vouched for the (1) uniform/homogenous dispersion/embedding of HA particles up to the highest HA/GNP ratio, (2) physical adhesion at the HA-PLA interface due to the HA particles’ porosity, (3) HA-GNP bonding, and (4) PLA-GNP synergy based on GNP complete exfoliation and dispersion into the matrix.

Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Mn55Bi45 Powders Obtained by Different Ball Milling Processes
2019
Low-temperature phase (LTP) MnBi is considered as a promising rare-earth-free permanent magnetic material with high coercivity and unique positive temperature coefficient of coercivity. Mn55Bi45 ribbons with high purity of LTP MnBi phase were prepared by melt spinning. Then, Mn55Bi45 powders with different particle size were obtained by low-energy ball milling (LEBM) with and without added surfactant. The coercivity is enhanced in both cases. Microstructure characterization reveals that Mn55Bi45 powders obtained by surfactant assisted low-energy ball milling (SALEBM) have better particle size uniformity and show higher decomposition of LTP MnBi. Coercivity can achieve a value of 17.2 kOe and the saturation magnetization (Ms) is 16 emu/g when Mn55Bi45 powders milled about 10 h by SALEBM. Coercivity has achieved a maximum value of 18.2 kOe at room temperature, and 23.5 kOe at 380 K after 14 h of LEBM. Furthermore, Mn55Bi45 powders obtained by LEBM have better magnetic properties.
