Bates provides a comprehensive overview or theory of the saz, an instrument that is grossly undertheorized. He explains the immense thing-power of the saz that demonstrates the heterogeneity of networks in which sazes have agency, and the multitude of attitudes towards and engagements with the saz. He entails the study of heterogeneous networks including instruments, performers, makers, listeners, and other material objects which directly addresses many key questions at the core of ethnomusicology, while extending the analytical models and methodological paradigms. Furthermore, Bates encourages others to publish their own saz stories, to expand the people's understanding of the social life of the saz.

Resource ecologies, political economies and the ethics of audio technologies in the Anthropocene

Understanding how recorded and amplified stage musics contribute towards producing the Anthropocene necessitates attending to complex transnational flows of material, capital and labor, and how they coalesce into technological objects. This is complicated by the wide array of sites, practices and knowledges involved during various stages of the production process, from initial resource extraction, to smelting, component manufacturing, technology assembly, and distribution. To develop a suitable technological ethics, and to understand what happens to environments and to human, animal and plant lifeworlds, requires one to resist abstraction and undertake a global accounting of resource ecologies with recourse to planetary-scale political economy. Towards this goal, I provide a partial account of an early 2000s mic preamp, a mundane but nonetheless fetishised recording studio technological object. I focus on two metals, tin and tantalum, that are primarily extracted for electronics manufacturing, and two building blocks of electronics, solder and capacitors, which are essential for making contemporary electronics.

Actor-Network Theory and Organology

At its most basic, actor-network theory is a methodological standpoint that assumes an analytical equivalence between humans and non-humans. Since anything can be an actor, ANT has been termed a \"flat ontology\" or, in other words, a non-hierarchical ordering of things. ANT, in its most basic form, doesn't have any particular explanatory or predictive power (the \"theory\" part of the term is a misnomer), but the methodology was developed alongside a number of interrelated concepts, some of which need to be included for an analysis to be truly exemplary of ANT. Here we need to understand the roles of many kinds of actors, including marketers, distributors, and expert users, in translating between the worlds of electronics and lab equipment, and the worlds of musicians in the genres of psychedelic rock, sound design, and underground/mainstream dance music. Agency, in this conceptualization, is not to be confused with intentionality: agency is simply a property of things that make a difference/change in a particular situation, rather than a result of conscious thought or intention.

Bates explores the production aesthetics that define the sound of most arranged traditional music albums produced in the early 2000s in Istanbul, Turkey. He focuses on two primary aesthetic characteristics, the achievement of which consume much of he labor put into tracking and mixing: parlak (\"shine\") and buyuk ses (\"big sound\"). He also examines the phenomenon of arranged traditional music, which has roots in Turkish government ensembles, but now encompasses performances of repertoire in many ethnic languages found in Turkey.
