Windsor-Essex inches closer to adding another Highway 401 interchange
The main interchange and highway project recently graduated to a preliminary design phase after clearing a provincial transportation environmental assessment study — including species at risk and archaeological considerations. Highway 401 within the area is six lanes with a posted speed limit of 110 km/h. Lauzon Parkway within the study area will be a future four-lane divided road that is proposed to be extended from County Road 42 to Highway 3.
Lake Erie has more ice in late January than any winter in the past 23 years
\"A lot of large lakes around the world don't undergo the sort of same seasonal changes in terms of temperature, ice formation, even what we would call heat content — that's like temperature integrated across the depths,\" Gronewold, an associate professor of environment and sustainability at the University of Michigan, previously told CBC News. George Karaganis, a senior meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the rapid formation of fast ice this month is not unexpected, given conditions that were in place well before the start of the year. \"The conditions [were] set for the lake to start [forming] ice quickly, and then when we had this abrupt cold snap, it just reacted very quickly.\" What stands out to him, however, is that prolonged cold spells and so-called “high ice years” are becoming increasingly rare—something he attributes to climate change.
Gordie Howe bridge Canadian border officers work elsewhere as they await opening
In the summer, Windsor West MP Harb Gill said the public deserved answers on when it would open calling it a “vital economic lifeline for Windsor and Canada.” According to Robichaud, once it does open in 2026, they’ll be immediately transferred from their existing positions — which are extra for those other locations. Canada is footing the entire multi-billion dollar bill for the project — a cost that rose from an original estimate of $5.7 billion to $6.4 billion as of a January 2024 figure.
How the provincial takeover of a Windsor school board 13 years ago played out
In 2012, the then Liberal government appointed a supervisor to takeover the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) because of a heavy and growing deficit. Greater Essex Country District School Board (GECDSB) trustee chair Gale Hatfield referred to Bill 33 as “overwhelming,” when speaking to the media before it was passed. Lisa Gretzky says it puts all school boards on high alert — while taking away the voice and abilities for parents and students locally to have a say in public education.

Windsor mom concerned autistic son could be locked in new green bin
Since the bins won't be used until October, Vernon says her family's bin is sitting upside down in her backyard — so the gravity lock won't engage. According to Vernon, the new curbside program is a long time coming and \"amazing\" for the environment, to keep organic waste out of landfills. According to Copot-Nepszy, it might make more sense for the Vernon family to remove the lock completely.
First snakes, now moths — species at risk continue to delay big east Windsor project
[...]that they're working with the city to consider an amendment under the endangered species act. \"If approved, the amendment would include conditions and requirements that permit for impacts to reversed haploa moth and its habitat, and to enable additional survey days for the relocation of Butler's gartersnake,\" he said in a statement. \"In areas of the project site where reversed haploa moth and its habitat have not been identified, and where snake surveys have been completed during the appropriate timing, the city of Windsor may proceed with vegetation clearing (primarily within areas located on the west side of Banwell Road),\" Davidson added. \" \"The public can expect to see mobilization of the general contractor followed by the localized vegetation clearing and commencement of construction activities in the coming weeks,\" said Michael Janisse with the city's communications department.
How Windsor is banking on debt to unlock and expedite east end development
According to Guthrie, the city's building department has informed administration of a \"significant\" amount of housing that will take place once the road network is available in the Banwell Road corridor. [...]of that, maybe the road condition changes and then it's now more suitable for apartment buildings … rather than just commercial.\" The neighbouring town has done its own recent construction work on more southerly parts of Banwell at County Road 42.
Endangered snakes delay Banwell Road, E.C. Row Expressway overpass projects
Under Ontario's Endangered Species Act, a provincial permit was issued to the city on May 28 regarding the snakes. According to Alexander, they've also come across other types of snakes and moved them, like Eastern gartersnakes, during the sweep of the project area. Traffic volumes are expected to increase in the area as the NextStar Energy battery plant continues to ramp up production and its hiring.
