Kevin Wrathall, a certified massage therapist who specializes in muscle, ligament and tendon injuries for the Center for Sports Medicine here, teaches a baby-massage course at the center for parents who want to learn the proper way to rub down their young ones. \"Babies have stress just like adults do,\" Wrathall said. \"And massage gives babies a sense of physical contact that is very important.\" Wrathall promotes baby massage as a means of bonding between parents and children. \"I especially recommend it for fathers,\" he said. \"A study showed that fathers spend an average of five minutes a day with their infant. Massage can develop a bond between them.\"

Wrathall also says he consulted with three pediatricians before his current massage class and although they said there was no scientific evidence that massage is physically beneficial for babies, they agreed there was potential benefit for infants through improved bonding.
