Monitoring the world’s areas that are more vulnerable to natural hazards has become crucial worldwide. In order to reduce disaster risk, effective tools and relevant land cover (LC) data are needed. This work aimed to generate a high-resolution LC map of flood-prone rural villages in southwest Niger using multispectral drone imagery. The LC was focused on highly thematically detailed classes. Two photogrammetric flights of fixed-wing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) using RGB and NIR optical sensors were realized. The LC input dataset was generated using structure from motion (SfM) standard workflow, resulting in two orthomosaics and a digital surface model (DSM). The LC system is composed of nine classes, which are relevant for estimating flood-induced potential damages, such as houses and production areas. The LC was generated through object-oriented supervised classification using a random forest (RF) classifier. Textural and elevation features were computed to overcome the mapping difficulties due to the high spectral homogeneity of cover types. The training-test dataset was manually defined. The segmentation resulted in an F1_score of 0.70 and a median Jaccard index of 0.88. The RF model performed with an overall accuracy of 0.94, with the grasslands and the rocky clustered areas classes the least performant.

Riparian habitats provide a series of ecological services vital for the balance of the environment, and are niches and resources for a wide variety of species. Monitoring riparian environments at the intra-habitat level is crucial for assessing and preserving their conservation status, although it is challenging due to their landscape complexity. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and multi-spectral optical sensors can be used for very high resolution (VHR) monitoring in terms of spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions. In this contribution, the vegetation species of the riparian habitat (91E0*, 3240 of Natura 2000 network) of North-West Italy were mapped at individual tree (ITD) level using machine learning and a multi-temporal phenology-based approach. Three UAV flights were conducted at the phenological-relevant time of the year (epochs). The data were analyzed using a structure from motion (SfM) approach. The resulting orthomosaics were segmented and classified using a random forest (RF) algorithm. The training dataset was composed of field-collected data, and was oversampled to reduce the effects of unbalancing and size. Three-hundred features were computed considering spectral, textural, and geometric information. Finally, the RF model was cross-validated (leave-one-out). This model was applied to eight scenarios that differed in temporal resolution to assess the role of multi-temporality over the UAV’s VHR optical data. Results showed better performances in multi-epoch phenology-based classification than single-epochs ones, with 0.71 overall accuracy compared to 0.61. Some classes, such as Pinus sylvestris and Betula pendula, are remarkably influenced by the phenology-based multi-temporality: the F1-score increased by 0.3 points by considering three epochs instead of two.

Forests play a central role in the management of the Earth’s climate. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) technologies facilitate the monitoring of large and impassable areas and can be used to monitor the 3D structure of forests. While the ALS-based forest measures have been studied in depth, 3D change detection in forests is still a subject of little attention in the literature due to the challenges introduced by comparing point cloud pairs. In this study, we propose an innovative methodology to (i) automatically perform a 3D change detection of forests on an individual tree level; (ii) estimate tree parameters with allometric equations; and (iii) perform an assessment of the aboveground biomass (AGB) variation over time. The area in which the tests were carried out was hit by an ice storm that occurred in the time interval between the two LiDAR acquisitions; furthermore, field measurements were carried out and used to validate the results. The single-tree segmentation of the point clouds was automatically performed with a local maxima algorithm to detect the treetop, and a decision tree method to define the individual crowns around the local maxima. The multitemporal comparison of the point clouds was based on the identification of single trees, which were matched when there was a correlation between the position of the treetops. For each tree, the DBH (diameter at breast height) and the AGB were also estimated using allometric equations. The results are promising and allowed us to identify the uprooted trees and estimate that about 40% of the AGB of the area under examination had been destroyed, with an RMSE over the estimation ranging between 4% and 21% in four scenarios.

This article explores the application of Hölder exponent analysis for the identification and delineation of single tree crowns from very high-resolution (VHR) imagery captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Most of the present individual tree crown detection (ITD) methods are based on canopy height models (CHM) and are very effective as far as an accurate digital terrain model (DTM) is available. This prerequisite is hard to accomplish in some environments, such as alpine forests, because of the high tree density and the irregular topography. Indeed, in such conditions, the photogrammetrically derived DTM can be inaccurate. A novel image processing method supports the segmentation of crowns based only on the parameter related to the multifractality description of the image. In particular, the multifractality is related to the deviation from a strict self-similarity and can be treated as the information about the level of inhomogeneity of considered data. The multifractals, even if well established in image processing and recognized by the scientific community, represent a relatively new application in VHR aerial imagery. In this work, the Hölder exponent (one of the parameters related to multifractal description) is applied to the study of a coniferous forest in the Western Alps. The infrared dataset with 10 cm pixels is captured by a UAV-mounted optical sensor. Then, the tree crowns are detected by a basic workflow. This consists of the thresholding of the image on the basis of the Hölder exponent. Then, the single crowns are segmented through a multiresolution segmentation approach. The ITD segmentation was validated through a two-level validation analysis that included a visual evaluation and the computing of quantitative measures based on 200 reference crowns. The results were checked against the ITD performed in the same area but using only spectral, textural, and elevation information. Specifically, the visual assessment included the estimation of the producer’s and user’s accuracies and the F1 score. The quantitative measures considered are the root mean square error (RMSE) (for the area, the perimeter, and the distance between centroids) and the over-segmentation and under-segmentation indices, the Jaccard index, and the completeness index. The F1 score indicates positive results (over 73%) as well as the completeness index that does not exceed 0.23 on a scale of 0 to 1, taking 0 as the best result possible. The RMSE of the extension of crowns is 3 m2, which represents only 14% of the average extension of reference crowns. The performance of the segmentation based on the Hölder exponent outclasses those based on spectral, textural, and elevation information. Despite the good results of the segmentation, the method tends to under-segment rather than over-segment, especially in areas with sloping. This study lays the groundwork for future research into ITD from VHR optical imagery using multifractals.

Monitoring Strawberry Plants’ Growth in Soil Amended with Biochar

This study evaluated the impact of biochar on the growth of strawberry plants, combining visual and proximal sensing monitoring. The plants were rooted in soil enriched with biochar, derived from pyrolysis of soft wood at 550 °C and applied in two doses (2 and 15 g/L), and after physical activation with CO2 at 900 °C; there was also a treatment with no biochar (unaltered). Visual monitoring was based on data logging twice per week of plants’ height and number of flowers and ripe fruits. Proximal sensing monitoring involved a system including a low-cost multispectral camera and a Raspberry Pi 4. The camera acquired nadiral images hourly in three spectral bands (550, 660, and 850 nm), allowing calculation of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). After three months, control plants reached a height of 12.3 ± 0.4 cm, while those treated with biochar and activated biochar grew to 18.03 ± 1.0 cm and 17.93 ± 1.2 cm, respectively. NDVI values were 0.15 ± 0.11 for control plants, increasing to 0.26 ± 0.03 (+78%) with biochar and to 0.28 ± 0.03 (+90%) with activated biochar. In conclusion, biochar application was beneficial for strawberry plants’ growth according to both visual and proximal-sensed measures. Further research is needed to optimize the integration of visual and proximal sensing monitoring, also enhancing the measured parameters.

Riparian ecosystems mapping at fine scale: a density approach based on multi‐temporal UAV photogrammetric point clouds

In recent years, numerous directives worldwide have addressed the conservation and restoration of riparian corridors, activities that rely on continuous vegetation mapping to understand its volumetric features and health status. Mapping riparian corridors requires not only fine‐scale resolution but also the coverage of relatively large areas. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) allows for meeting both conditions, although the cost‐effectiveness of their use is highly influenced by the type of sensor mounted on them. Few works have so far investigated the use of photogrammetric sensors for individual tree crown detection, despite being cheaper than the most common Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) ones. This work aims to improve the individual crown detection from UAV‐photogrammetric datasets in a twofold way. Firstly, the effectiveness of a new approach that has already achieved interesting results in LiDAR applications was tested for photogrammetric point clouds. The test was carried out by comparing the accuracy achieved by the new approach, which is based on the point density features of the analysed dataset, with those related to the more common local maxima and textural methods. The results indicated the potentiality of the density‐based method, which achieved accuracy values (0.76 F‐score) consistent with the traditional methods (0.49–0.80 F‐score range) but was less affected by under‐ and over‐fitting. Secondly, the potential improvement of working on intra‐annual multi‐temporal datasets was assessed by applying the density‐based approach to seven different scenarios, three of which were constituted by single‐epoch datasets and the remaining given by the joining of the others. The F‐score increased from 0.67 to 0.76 when passing from single‐ to multi‐epoch datasets, aligning with the accuracy achieved by the new method when applied to LiDAR data. The results demonstrate the potential of multi‐temporal acquisitions when performing individual crown detection from photogrammetric data. In the past decades, technology-based agriculture, also known as Precision Agriculture (PA) or smart farming, has grown, developing new technologies and innovative tools to manage data for the whole agricultural processes. In this framework, geographic information, and spatial data and tools such as UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and multispectral optical sensors play a crucial role in the geomatics as support techniques. PA needs software to store and process spatial data and the Free and Open Software System (FOSS) community kept pace with PA’s needs: several FOSS software tools have been developed for data gathering, analysis, and restitution. The adoption of FOSS solutions, WebGIS platforms, open databases, and spatial data infrastructure to process and store spatial and nonspatial acquired data helps to share information among different actors with user-friendly solutions. Nevertheless, a comprehensive open-source platform that, besides processing UAV data, allows directly storing, visualising, sharing, and querying the final results and the related information does not exist. Indeed, today, the PA’s data elaboration and management with a FOSS approach still require several different software tools. Moreover, although some commercial solutions presented platforms to support management in PA activities, none of these present a complete workflow including data from acquisition phase to processed and stored information. In this scenario, the paper aims to provide UAV and PA users with a FOSS-replicable methodology that can fit farming activities’ operational and management needs. Therefore, this work focuses on developing a totally FOSS workflow to visualise, process, analyse, and manage PA data. In detail, a multidisciplinary approach is adopted for creating an operative web-sharing tool able to manage Very High Resolution (VHR) agricultural multispectral-derived information gathered by UAV systems. A vineyard in Northern Italy is used as an example to show the workflow of data generation and the data structure of the web tool. A UAV survey was carried out using a six-band multispectral camera and the data were elaborated through the Structure from Motion (SfM) technique, resulting in 3 cm resolution orthophoto. A supervised classifier identified the phenological stage of under-row weeds and the rows with a 95% overall accuracy. Then, a set of GIS-developed algorithms allowed Individual Tree Detection (ITD) and spectral indices for monitoring the plant-based phytosanitary conditions. A spatial data structure was implemented to gather the data at canopy scale. The last step of the workflow concerned publishing data in an interactive 3D webGIS, allowing users to update the spatial database. The webGIS can be operated from web browsers and desktop GIS. The final result is a shared open platform obtained with nonproprietary software that can store data of different sources and scales.

Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world. However, it has been a challenge to manage the main pest affecting the plant’s foliar part, the Coffee Leaf Miner (CLM) Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). To mitigate this, remote sensing has been employed to spectrally characterize various stresses on coffee trees. This study establishes the groundwork for efficient pest detection by investigating the spectral characteristics of CLM infestation at different levels. This research aims to characterize the spectral signature of leaves at different CLM levels of infestation and identify the optimal spectral regions for discriminating these levels. To achieve this, hyperspectral reflectance measurements were made of healthy and infested leaves, and the classes of infested leaves were grouped into minimally, moderately, and severely infested. As the infestation level rises, the 700 nm region becomes increasingly suitable for distinguishing between infestation levels, with the visible region also proving significant, particularly during severe infestations. Reflectance thresholds established in this study provide a foundation for agronomic references related to CLM. These findings lay the essential groundwork for enhancing monitoring and early detection systems and underscore the value of terrestrial hyperspectral data for developing sustainable pest management strategies in coffee crops.

Flood Damage Risk Mapping Along the River Niger: Ten Benefits of a Participated Approach

Flood risk mapping is spreading in the Global South due to the availability of high-resolution/high-frequency satellite imagery, volunteered geographic information, and hydraulic models. However, these maps are increasingly generated without the participation of exposed communities, contrary to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 priorities. As a result, the understanding of risk is limited. This study aims to map flood risk with citizen science complemented by hydrology, geomatics, and spatial planning. The Niger River floods of 2024–2025 on a 113 km2 area upstream of Niamey are investigated. The novelty of the work is the integration of local and technical knowledge in the micro-mapping of risk in a large area. We consider risk the product of a hazard and damage in monetary terms. Focus groups in flooded municipalities, interviews with irrigation perimeter managers, and statistical river flow and rainfall analysis identified the hazard. The flood plain was extracted from Sentinel-2 images using MNDWI and validated with ground control points. Six classes of assets were identified by visual photo interpretation of very high-resolution satellite imagery. Damage was ascertained through interviews with a sample of farmers. The floods of 2024–2025 may occur again in the next 12–19 years. Farmers cannot crop safer sites, raising significant environmental justice issues. Damage depends on the strength of the levees, the crop, and the season. From January to February, horticulture is at a higher risk. Flooding does not bring benefits. Risk maps highlight hot spots, are validated, and can be linked to observed flood levels.

Flood Hazard Scenarios of the Sirba River (Niger): Evaluation of the Hazard Thresholds and Flooding Areas

In Sahelian countries, a vast number of people are still affected every year by flood despite the efforts to prevent or mitigate these catastrophic events. This phenomenon is exacerbated by the incessant population growth and the increase of extreme natural events. Hence, the development of flood management strategies such as flood hazard mapping and Early Warning Systems has become a crucial objective for the affected nations. This study presents a comprehensive hazard assessment of the Nigerien reach of the Sirba River, the main tributary Middle Niger River. Hazard thresholds were defined both on hydrological analysis and field effects, according to national guidelines. Non-stationary analyses were carried out to consider changes in the hydrological behavior of the Sirba basin over time. Data from topographical land surveys and discharge gauges collected during the 2018 dry and wet seasons were used to implement the hydraulic numerical model of the analyzed reach. The use of the proposed hydraulic model allowed the delineation of flood hazard maps as well the calculation of the flood propagation time from the upstream hydrometric station and the validation of the rating curves of the two gauging sites. These significative outcomes will allow the implementation of the Early Warning System for the river flood hazard and risk reduction plans preparation for each settlement.
