Perhaps it will help us combat future attacks (\"Moshe's grandparents: We'll take over Chabad mission in India,\" December 2). Sir, - I am perplexed that David Horovitz should suggest that Binyamin Netanyahu ought to reveal whether he is prepared to relinquish the Golan, and where he would draw his West Bank red lines (\"Spoilt for choice,\" November 28). Would not such clarity, which would inform the Arabs just what territory we are prepared to concede, weaken Israel's bargaining position in the event of negotiations between a - hopefully - more hawkish Israeli government and the opposing side?
Letters
Sir, - In rebuttal to the eloquent letter by Lt.-Col. Patrick Lort-Phillips (\"Bigoted and jingoistic...,\" June 25) stating that his daughter Alexandra \"and her friends had been assaulted, killed, injured, abused, robbed and incarcerated,\" he did not mention that her friends attacked the commandos first - they were not well-meaning idealists. He writes that responses to \"well-meaning idealists\" have \"lost Israel many friends,\" a refrain we Israelis have heard often these past few weeks. What a cruel irony that a British army officer did not learn the lesson of an earlier peer who claimed that \"everything would have been fine if only Herr Hitler had not lied to me.\" Neville Chamberlain also was an idealist. Sir, - Tony Blair is either wittingly or unwittingly complicit in the process mentioned by Sarah Honig (\"Musings on skillful salami-slicers,\" June 18).

Sir, - In \"Pearlman alleges Shin Bet agent urged him to murder Raed Salah\" (July 16), you state that Haim Pearlman's remand hearing \"was held in Pearlman's absence as he has been forbidden to meet with his lawyer Adi Keidar since his arrest.\" Sir, - I was shocked to the core to read that no less an authority than Israel's deputy attorney-general was reported to have told the UN Human Rights Committee that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights did not apply to Israel's treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza \"because these areas were outside the country's national boundaries\" (\"Israel to UN: West Bank outside our boundaries,\" July 16). The unmistakable implication of this statement (if indeed it was made) is that Israel regards the armistice lines of 1949 - the so-called Green Line, once dubbed by the late Abba Eban as Israel's \"Auschwitz lines\" - as its national boundary, an implication that runs directly counter to Israeli policy as conducted by all of Israel's governments ever since the 1967 Six-Day War. Thus, when the Begin government in December 1977 submitted its proposals for the establishment of autonomy for the Arab inhabitants of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza district, it spelled out its position as follows:

I respectfully disagree with [Yehuda Bauer], who feels there is no space in Yad Vashem for reference to Hillel Kook (\"Why Kook is out,\" August 22). If the US Holocaust Museum could find space, surely Yad Vashem can do likewise. I feel that those visiting Yad Vashem should be made aware that in times of crisis, there is an obligation on Jews in free countries to follow Kook's example rather than that of the failed Jewish establishment, which feared to rock the boat and placed their faith in princes. Even if the request is problematic, it is outrageous for Yad Vashem spokesmen to dismiss a petition from over 100 distinguished Jewish scholars and public figures ranging over the entire political spectrum, and say \"We might review the situation in 10 years' time.\" Sir, - Yehuda Bauer of Yad Vashem tells us that the museum \"is devoted, by design, to what happened to the Jews of Europe, in Europe.\" Does that mean it is not interested in the Holocaust the Nazis introduced in North Africa, specifically Tunisia?

Sir, - I am deeply concerned about statements made after US envoy George Mitchell's recent \"proximity\" talks (\"PM: There's no back and forth between Israel, Palestinians,\" May 24). Meanwhile, Israeli officials expressed irritation at the Palestinians' \"endless chatter\" about the content of the indirect talks, saying that if details are made public, \"it will make things more difficult.\" This really means, however, that it would lead to domestic opposition. Tuesday's Jerusalem Post headline \"Barak: Labor will never leave [Netanyahu] coalition\" did not accurately reflect the article, which correctly reported that the defense minister had only \"hinted\" that his party would not bring down the government.
