Comparative transcriptome analysis highlights the crucial roles of photosynthetic system in drought stress adaptation in upland rice
Drought stress is one of the major adverse environmental factors reducing plant growth. With the aim to elucidate the underlying molecular basis of rice response to drought stress, comparative transcriptome analysis was conducted between drought susceptible rice cultivar Zhenshan97 and tolerant cultivar IRAT109 at the seedling stage. 436 genes showed differential expression and mainly enriched in the Gene Ontology (GO) terms of stress defence. A large number of variations exist between these two genotypes including 2564 high-quality insertion and deletions (INDELs) and 70,264 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs). 1041 orthologous gene pairs show the ratio of nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution rate to synonymous nucleotide substitutions rate (Ka/Ks) larger than 1.5, indicating the rapid adaptation to different environments during domestication. GO and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis of positive selection genes suggested that photosynthesis represents the most significant category. The collocation of positively selected genes with the QTLs of photosynthesis and the different photosynthesis performance of these two cultivars further illuminate the crucial function of photosynthesis in rice adaptation to drought stress. Our results also provide fruitful functional markers and candidate genes for future genetic research and improvement of drought tolerance in rice.

Increased expression of NLRP3 associated with elevated levels of HMGB1 in children with febrile seizures: a case–control study
Background High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) is an endogenous danger signal that mediates activation of the innate immune response including NLR pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation and proinflammatory cytokine release. Although HMGB1 and NLRP3 have been implicated in the pathophysiology of seizures, the correlation between HMGB1 and NLRP3 expression has not been determined in children with febrile seizures (FS). To explore the relationship between extra-cellular HMGB1 and NLRP3 in children with FS, we analyzed serum HMGB1, NLRP3, caspase-1, and proinflammatory cytokines in patients with FS. Methods Thirty children with FS and thirty age-matched febrile controls were included in this study. Blood was obtained from the children with FS within 1 h of the time of the seizure; subsequently, the serum contents of HMGB1, NLRP3, caspase-1, interleukin (IL)-1β, interleukin (IL)-6, and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The Mann‒Whitney U test was used to compare serum cytokine levels between FS patients and controls. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was calculated to detect significant correlations between cytokine levels. Results Serum levels of HMGB1, NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were significantly higher in FS patients than in febrile controls ( p  < 0.05). Serum levels of HMGB1 were significantly correlated with levels of NLRP3 and caspase-1 (both, p  < 0.05). Serum levels of caspase-1 were significantly correlated with levels of IL-1β ( p  < 0.05). Serum levels of IL-1β were significantly correlated with levels of IL-6 and TNF-α ( p  < 0.05). Conclusions HMGB1 is up-regulated in the peripheral serum of FS patients, which may be responsible, at least in part, for the increased expression of NLRP3 and Caspase-1. Increased expression of caspase-1 was significantly associated with elevated serum levels of IL-1β. Given that activated Caspase-1 directly regulates the expression of mature IL-1β and positively correlates with activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, our data suggest that increased levels of peripheral HMGB1 possibly mediate IL-1β secretion through the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in children with FS. Thus, both HMGB1 and NLRP3 might be potential targets for preventing or limiting FS.
Performance, kinetic characteristics and bacterial community of short-cut nitrification and denitrification system at different ferrous ion conditions
In order to explore the operation performance, kinetic characteristics and bacterial community of the short-cut nitrification and denitrification (SND) system, the SND system with pre-cultured short cut nitrification and denitrification sludge was established and operated under different ferrous ion (Fe (II)) conditions. Experimental results showed that the average NH4+–N removal efficiency (ARE) of SND system was 97.3% on Day 5 and maintained a high level of 94.9% ± 1.3% for a long operation period. When the influent Fe(II) concentration increased from 2.3 to 7.3 mg L−1, the sedimentation performance, sludge concentration and organic matter removal performance were improved. However, higher Fe(II) of 12.3 mg L−1 decreased the removal of nitrogen and CODCr with the relative abundance (RA) of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes decreased to 30.28% and 19.41%, respectively. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in SND system. Higher Fe(II) level of 12.3 mg L−1 increase the RA of denitrifying genus Trichococcus (33.93%), and the denitrifying genus Thauera and Tolumonas dominant at Fe(II) level of no more than 7.3 mg L−1.

Synthesis and Shape Memory Property of a MDI Based Liquid Crystalline Polyurethane
Liquid crystalline polyurethanes (LCPU) were prepared from 4,4’-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), 1,6-hexanediol (HDO), 2,2-dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) and polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG). The experiments synthesized three liquid crystalline polyurethane films with different soft/hard segment ratio. Chemical and structural characterization of the polyurethanes were investigated by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimeter and polarized microscopy respectively. Swelling rate and shape memory property were tested. The results indicated that the polyurethane with 62% soft segment and large group of carboxyl displayed excellent swelling and shape memory properties, and the shape recovery rate reached 100%. It was found that the crystallinity, thermal stability decreased and the temperature flexibility, water absorption and shape recovery rate increased with the increase of polytetramethylene ether glycol.
Effects of Ionic Group on the Shape Memory Performance of Polyurethane
Ionic polyurethane (IPU) was synthesized as shape memory materials. Poly (tetramethylene ether) glycol with 2000g/mol number average molecular weight were used as soft segment, 4,4-methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate), and 1,2-dihydroxy-3-propanesulfonic acid salt were used to compose the segment of SMP materials. The structure and properties of these IPU films were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, Thermal gravimetric analysis and Differential scanning calorimeter. The results showed that the glass transition temperature of the IPU increased with the increase of hard segment content. The physical properties in terms of swelling property, water absorption and ion-exchange capacity increased with the improving of sulfonic group content in IPU. The shape memory property of IPU exhibited that the shape fixity ratio and recovery rate improved remarkably with the increase of hard segment content.
Inhibition of β -catenin-mediated Transactivation by Cadherin Derivatives
We studied the effect of N-cadherin, and its free or membrane-anchored cytoplasmic domain, on the level and localization of β -catenin and on its ability to induce lymphocyte enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF-1)-responsive transactivation. These cadherin derivatives formed complexes with β -catenin and protected it from degradation. N-cadherin directed β -catenin into adherens junctions, and the chimeric protein induced diffuse distribution of β -catenin along the membrane whereas the cytoplasmic domain of N-cadherin colocalized with β -catenin in the nucleus. Cotransfection of β -catenin and LEF-1 into Chinese hamster ovary cells induced transactivation of a LEF-1 reporter, which was blocked by the N-cadherin-derived molecules. Expression of N-cadherin and an interleukin 2 receptor/cadherin chimera in SW480 cells relocated β -catenin from the nucleus to the plasma membrane and reduced transactivation. The cytoplasmic tails of N- or E-cadherin colocalized with β -catenin in the nucleus, and suppressed the constitutive LEF-1-mediated transactivation, by blocking β -catenin-LEF-1 interaction. Moreover, the 72 C-terminal amino acids of N-cadherin stabilized β -catenin and reduced its transactivation potential. These results indicate that β -catenin binding to the cadherin cytoplasmic tail either in the membrane, or in the nucleus, can inhibit β -catenin degradation and efficiently block its transactivation capacity.
