Untreated sewage outfalls do not promote Trichodesmium blooms in the coasts of the Canary Islands
During the summer of 2017, recurrent extensive blooms of the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium invaded the beaches and coastal waters of the Canary Islands, causing great social alarm. Some local media and public sectors ascribed, without any strong scientific evidence, the origin and reactivation of these blooms to untreated sewage outfalls distributed along the coasts. In order to test whether sewage outfalls could have any influence on the metabolic activity of Trichodesmium , we performed 13 C and 15 N 2 uptake experiments with colonies experiencing three different bloom development stages, incubated both with clear seawater and sewage water from an outfall south of Gran Canaria island. Our results showed that sewage outfalls did not promote any increase in dinitrogen (N 2 ) fixation in Trichodesmium , supporting the hypothesis that decaying blooms were generated offshore and transported shoreward by local currents and winds, accumulating mostly leeward of the islands. The combination of unusually warm seawater temperatures, enhanced and sustained stratification of the upper water column and recurrent dust deposition events would have favored the development of the Trichodesmium blooms, which lasted for at least four months.
Cost accounting practices in SMEs: liability of age and other factors that hinder or burst its implementation in turbulent years
This study aimed to investigate the level of cost accounting (CA) implementation in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). CA is a management accounting tool whose application in small companies has always been difficult. Nevertheless, academicians and practitioners recommend CA implementation in SMEs, especially because of the deep market instability, competitive pressure, and margin erosion that have occurred following the COVID-19 pandemic and 2022 European war scenario. Company size influences CA implementation; however, it is not the only influencing factor and perhaps not even the most important. To investigate the barriers to the adoption of CA and which conditions or actions can remove these barriers, leveraging from the contingency theory, a questionnaire was sent out in July 2022 to limited liability SMEs operating in the manufacturing, construction, and distribution macro-sectors in Verona and Vicenza provinces (Italy). Respondents answered a set of questions regarding CA implementation in their SMEs as of July 2022. Using a multivariate regression model to analyze data from the 120 questionnaires received, we found that lack of resources, limited training and skills, firm age, and the presence of the founder in the firm had a negative influence on CA implementation in SMEs. The low level of CA implementation was also associated with its supposed inefficiency, uselessness, and unsuitability for business. The effect of company size on CA implementation was not statistically significant. Despite this study’s limitations regarding the sample and period considered, we believe that it contributes to both academic debates and practice by illustrating the limiting factors and ways in which CA implementation can be fostered in SMEs in turbulent years.
Innovation and knowledge creation: perspectives on the SMEs sector
Purpose - The paper aims to look at small to medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs') approach to learning and innovation.Design methodology approach - The first research direction focuses on the internal and external sources for learning used in the innovation process. A second research direction focuses on the main types of innovation SMEs engage in along with some of the obstacles or constraints identified within the innovation process. In order to answer the research questions set, the authors conducted a survey among 161 Romanian SMEs from various economic sectors and covering different geographical areas.Findings - Romanian SMEs display a learning orientation related to innovation, using best practices within the organization and networking with external partners as internal sources for learning, whereas in terms of external support for learning, SMEs consider changes that take place on the market, changes in technology and the input from experts and consultants. Concerning the innovation type, Romanian SMEs are very much oriented towards innovation in their business model, at the same time being faced with various constraints such as lack of funds and high costs involved.Practical implications - Firstly, in what concerns the organizational learning dimension, the need for SMEs to focus on strengthening the collaboration with universities (higher education area), as the research pointed out that only few SMEs rely on universities and educational institutions in acquiring knowledge. Secondly, to focus on innovation and manage innovation activities as a core competency inside the firm in relation to designing a process of organizational change in SMEs, which should enhance drastically the performance of such initiatives.Originality value - So far, few studies have been conducted on innovation and knowledge creation in South-Eastern European SMEs. The findings presented in the paper offer a holistic view of the innovation approach in Romanian SMEs, emphasizing the predominant type of innovation implemented along with specific constraints applied. The originality of the paper also relates to the fact that few studies conducted in Romania on SMEs focus on the internal and external sources of knowledge in the innovation process.
How can agrifood businesses improve their performance? The role of digital transformation
PurposeThe aim of this paper is to analyse the moderating effect of digital transformation (DT) on the relationship between innovation capacity and the performance of agrifood businesses.Design/methodology/approachBased on a structured questionnaire, data on 98 agrifood small and medium-sized enterprises operating in Spain were collected. The data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling to test the proposed model and study the moderating effect of DT on the relationship between the innovation capacity and performance of agrifood businesses.FindingsThe study finds support for the hypotheses and shows the existence of a direct positive relationship between the DT and performance of agrifood businesses. Developing new practices focussed on customer service and performing actions such as improving sales, promoting a new product or service and including a post-sales service influence the capacity of a business to undertake DT.Research limitations/implicationsFuture studies should include other factors in the analysis. For example, the impact of knowledge transfer and research and development (R&D) on agrifood businesses' performance should be studied. Education and training, as well as having a diverse network, can help develop and boost businesses' capacity to use and apply the required innovation. Networks play an important role in learning how to apply DT.Originality/valueThis quantitative study is the first to examine the moderating effect of DT in the Spanish agrifood sector on the relationship between innovation capacity and performance. The study examines the role of the DT of companies and explores the competitiveness and efficiency tools that digitalisation offers. Innovation capacity is crucial for the application of these tools.
When intentions turn into action: pathways to successful firm performance
Entrepreneurship brings wealth to nations and contributes to their economic growth. People can take many paths to become entrepreneurs. Some join the family business, whilst others are born entrepreneurs, letting their innate intuition lead them into firm creation. For many, though, being able to learn and acquire the right skills is critical for a successful career as an entrepreneur. Like other human capital factors, entrepreneurial skills can be acquired. In today’s fast-changing society, it is of utmost importance for entrepreneurs not only to gain these skills but also to be surrounded by a supportive environment that will (1) guide them in the creation of their business idea and (2) help them succeed and keep their business alive. Taking the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as an initial theoretical framework, this paper studies the pathways that lead newly established entrepreneurs to successful firm performance. In this paper, qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is used to study a sample of 49 entrepreneurs who responded to an online survey. The results reveal different pathways leading to successful firm performance. This study fills a theoretical and empirical gap and makes a valuable contribution to the literature on entrepreneurial behaviour by exploring the combinations of factors that best explain entrepreneurs’ success in achieving high firm performance. Examining the entrepreneurial process and the factors that guide entrepreneurs towards new firm success provides valuable insights that can help universities, policymakers and prospective entrepreneurs take better decisions.
The refugee entrepreneurship process from/in emerging economies
The paper examines several refugee experiences in Mexico and presents their reasons for leaving their home countries. A gap in research is identifying the entrepreneurial process experienced by refugee entrepreneurs. We use the case study of 10 Latin American refugees in Mexico to propose a conceptual framework that describes the entrepreneurial process of refugee entrepreneurs. We have found that this process begins with the abandonment of the country of origin, followed by the traumatic experiences that caused flight and the difficulties they face in the pilgrimage to the host country. These events help shape the entrepreneurial intention of the refugees.
Dissolved organic matter uptake by Trichodesmium in the Southwest Pacific
The globally distributed diazotroph Trichodesmium contributes importantly to nitrogen inputs in the oligotrophic oceans. Sites of dissolved organic matter (DOM) accumulation could promote the mixotrophic nutrition of Trichodesmium when inorganic nutrients are scarce. Nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometry (nanoSIMS) analyses of individual trichomes sampled in the South Pacific Ocean, showed significant 13 C-enrichments after incubation with either 13 C-labeled carbohydrates or amino acids. These results suggest that DOM could be directly taken up by Trichodesmium or primarily consumed by heterotrophic epibiont bacteria that ultimately transfer reduced DOM compounds to their host trichomes. Although the addition of carbohydrates or amino acids did not significantly affect bulk N 2 fixation rates, N 2 fixation was enhanced by amino acids in individual colonies of Trichodesmium. We discuss the ecological advantages of DOM use by Trichodesmium as an alternative to autotrophic nutrition in oligotrophic open ocean waters.
Sinking Trichodesmium fixes nitrogen in the dark ocean
The photosynthetic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium is widely distributed in the surface low latitude ocean where it contributes significantly to N 2 fixation and primary productivity. Previous studies found nifH genes and intact Trichodesmium colonies in the sunlight-deprived meso- and bathypelagic layers of the ocean (200–4000 m depth). Yet, the ability of Trichodesmium to fix N 2 in the dark ocean has not been explored. We performed 15 N 2 incubations in sediment traps at 170, 270 and 1000 m at two locations in the South Pacific. Sinking Trichodesmium colonies fixed N 2 at similar rates than previously observed in the surface ocean (36–214 fmol N cell −1 d −1 ). This activity accounted for 40 ± 28% of the bulk N 2 fixation rates measured in the traps, indicating that other diazotrophs were also active in the mesopelagic zone. Accordingly, cDNA nifH amplicon sequencing revealed that while Trichodesmium accounted for most of the expressed nifH genes in the traps, other diazotrophs such as Chlorobium and Deltaproteobacteria were also active. Laboratory experiments simulating mesopelagic conditions confirmed that increasing hydrostatic pressure and decreasing temperature reduced but did not completely inhibit N 2 fixation in Trichodesmium . Finally, using a cell metabolism model we predict that Trichodesmium uses photosynthesis-derived stored carbon to sustain N 2 fixation while sinking into the mesopelagic. We conclude that sinking Trichodesmium provides ammonium, dissolved organic matter and biomass to mesopelagic prokaryotes.
Mesopelagic N2 Fixation Related to Organic Matter Composition in the Solomon and Bismarck Seas (Southwest Pacific)
Dinitrogen (N2) fixation was investigated together with organic matter composition in the mesopelagic zone of the Bismarck (Transect 1) and Solomon (Transect 2) Seas (Southwest Pacific). Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) and the presence of compounds sharing molecular formulae with saturated fatty acids and sugars, as well as dissolved organic matter (DOM) compounds containing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were higher on Transect 1 than on Transect 2, while oxygen concentrations showed an opposite pattern. N2 fixation rates (up to ~1 nmol N L-1 d-1) were higher in Transect 1 than in Transect 2, and correlated positively with TEP, suggesting a dependence of diazotroph activity on organic matter. The scores of the multivariate ordination of DOM molecular formulae and their relative abundance correlated negatively with bacterial abundances and positively with N2 fixation rates, suggesting an active bacterial exploitation of DOM and its use to sustain diazotrophic activity. Sequences of the nifH gene clustered with Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma- and Deltaproteobacteria, and included representatives from Clusters I, III and IV. A third of the clone library included sequences close to the potentially anaerobic Cluster III, suggesting that N2 fixation was partially supported by presumably particle-attached diazotrophs. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) primer-probe sets were designed for three phylotypes and showed low abundances, with a phylotype within Cluster III at up to 103 nifH gene copies L-1. These results provide new insights into the ecology of non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs and suggest that organic matter sustains their activity in the mesopelagic ocean.
Activity and distribution of diazotrophic communities across the Cape Verde Frontal Zone in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean
We investigated dinitrogen (N₂) fixation activity and diazotroph community composition across the Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ), from photic epipelagic waters (0-200 m) to aphotic meso-(200–1000 m) and bathypelagic (> 1000 m) waters. The highest N₂ fixation rates of 4.1 ± 2.2 nmol N l⁻¹ day⁻¹ and 7.8 ± 2.3 nmol N l⁻¹ day⁻¹ were in epipelagic waters south of the front. We detected aphotic N₂ fixation in 5 out of 32 samples, primarily south of the front, and sporadically down to 3,000 m, with rates ranging from 0.03 ± 0.01 nmol N l⁻¹ day⁻¹ to 0.07 ± 0.01 nmol N l-1 day⁻¹. Cyanobacteria dominated the diazotroph community and nitrogenase gene (nifH) expression profiles in surface waters and, surprisingly, in aphotic waters. The detection of cyanobacterial nifH genes by DNA sequencing and quantitative PCR in the aphotic zone, together with nifH expression in meso- and bathypelagic waters, indicates a downward flux of metabolically active cyanobacteria, and points to a contribution to the observed aphotic N₂ fixation rates. In the photic zone, UCYN-A dominated north of the front, whereas Trichodesmium was mainly found in the southern region. However, our results also show that cross-frontal advection of cyanobacterial diazotrophs can occur via intrusions of surface water. Salinity, temperature, and mixed layer depth were the main determinants of the diazotroph composition and distribution of the key cyanobacteria. Thus, the front appeared to act as a dynamic barrier controlling the distribution of cyanobacterial diazotrophs.
