The CUPID-Mo experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay: performance and prospects
CUPID-Mo is a bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ( 0 ν β β ) of 100 Mo . In this article, we detail the CUPID-Mo detector concept, assembly and installation in the Modane underground laboratory, providing results from the first datasets. The CUPID-Mo detector consists of an array of 20 100 Mo -enriched 0.2 kg Li 2 MoO 4 crystals operated as scintillating bolometers at ∼ 20 mK . The Li 2 MoO 4 crystals are complemented by 20 thin Ge optical bolometers to reject α events by the simultaneous detection of heat and scintillation light. We observe a good detector uniformity and an excellent energy resolution of 5.3 keV (6.5 keV) FWHM at 2615 keV, in calibration (physics) data. Light collection ensures the rejection of α particles at a level much higher than 99.9% – with equally high acceptance for γ / β events – in the region of interest for 100 Mo 0 ν β β . We present limits on the crystals’ radiopurity: ≤ 3 μ Bq/kg of 226 Ra and ≤ 2 μ Bq/kg of 232 Th . We discuss the science reach of CUPID-Mo, which can set the most stringent half-life limit on the 100 Mo 0 ν β β decay in half-a-year’s livetime. The achieved results show that CUPID-Mo is a successful demonstrator of the technology developed by the LUMINEU project and subsequently selected for the CUPID experiment, a proposed follow-up of CUORE, the currently running first tonne-scale bolometric 0 ν β β experiment.
Identifying the Extent of the Urban Fringe and Its Impact on Agricultural Land Values
This study presents an empirical model of the impacts of agricultural and urban returns on farmland value. The model allows the marginal impacts of parcel characteristics to vary nonlinearly over space with an endogenous smooth transition between urban fringe and rural areas. The estimation examines 10,317 parcel-level farmland transactions across the state of Illinois over the period January 2001–December 2009. The results suggest that marginal impacts of both agricultural and urban returns differ between urban fringe and rural areas.
The NIKA2 Instrument, A Dual-Band Kilopixel KID Array for Millimetric Astronomy
New IRAM KID array 2 (NIKA2) is a camera dedicated to millimeter-wave astronomy based upon kilopixel arrays of kinetic inductance detectors [ 1 ] (KID). The pathfinder instrument, NIKA [ 2 ], has already shown state-of-the-art detector performance. NIKA2 builds upon this experience but goes one step further, increasing the total pixel count by a factor ∼ 10 while maintaining the same per pixel performance. For the next decade, this camera will be the resident photometric instrument of the Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimetrique (IRAM) 30 m telescopes in Sierra Nevada (Spain). In this paper, we give an overview of the main components of NIKA2 and describe the achieved detector performance. The camera has been permanently installed at the IRAM 30 m telescope in October 2015. It will be made accessible to the scientific community at the end of 2016, after a 1-year commissioning period. When this happens, NIKA2 will become a fundamental tool for astronomers worldwide.
Precise measurement of $2νββ$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the CUPID-Mo detection technology
We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta ($2\\nu\\beta\\beta$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru using lithium molybdate (\\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of $42.235$ kg$\\times$d, the half-life of $^{100}$Mo is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2\\nu}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\\,\\mathrm{(stat.)}\\pm0.10\\,\\mathrm{(syst.)}]\\times10^{18}$ years. This is the most accurate determination of the $2\\nu\\beta\\beta$ half-life of $^{100}$Mo to date. We also confirm, with the statistical significance of $>3\\sigma$, that the single-state dominance model of the $2\\nu\\beta\\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo is favored over the high-state dominance model.
Panic Disorder Severity Scale self-report: transcultural validation and sensitivity to change of the French-Canadian adaptation
IntroductionThe self-report version of the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS-SR) is a reliable and valid instrument to assess panic disorder, but is unavailable in French.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to conduct a transcultural validation of the French-Canadian PDSS-SR and examine its psychometric properties.MethodsThis study is part of a pragmatic RCT of group transdiagnostic CBT for anxiety disorders, and includes 272 adults meeting DSM-5 panic disorder diagnostic criteria. At baseline, participants completed the Anxiety and Related Disorders Interview Schedule (ADIS-5), the French-Canadian PDSS-SR and self-report measures. Convergent validity was assessed with Spearman correlations, Cronbach’s α was used to analyse internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) evaluated its factor structure. Sensitivity to change was assessed with paired sample t-tests in patients (n = 72) meeting DSM-5 criteria for panic disorder at baseline with posttreatment data.Results108 patients met DSM-5 criteria for panic disorder, including 58 with agoraphobia. The majority were women (85.3%) and mean age was 37.1 (SD = 12.4). Internal consistency (Cronbach’s α) was 0.91. For convergent validity, the highest correlation was with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (r = 0.64). CFA suggested a two-factor model. Optimal threshold for probable diagnosis was 10. Analyses support sensitivity to change when comparing transdiagnostic group CBT and control conditions.ConclusionsWith its good psychometric properties in primary care patients, the French-Canadian self-report version of the Panic Disorder Severity Scale is an efficient and practical instrument for both clinicians and researchers working in the field of mental health.DisclosureNo significant relationships.
High Impedance TES Bolometers for EDELWEISS
The EDELWEISS collaboration aims for direct detection of light dark matter using germanium cryogenic detectors with low threshold phonon sensor technologies and efficient charge readout designs. We describe here the development of Ge bolometers equipped with high impedance thermistors based on a Nb x Si 1−x TES alloy. High aspect ratio spiral designs allow the TES impedance to match with JFET or HEMT front-end amplifiers. We detail the behavior of the superconducting transition properties of these sensors and the detector optimization in terms of sensitivity to a-thermal phonons. We report preliminary results of a 200 g Ge detector that was calibrated using 71 Ge activation by neutrons at the LSM underground laboratory.
Ten new complete mitochondrial genomes of pulmonates (Mollusca: Gastropoda) and their impact on phylogenetic relationships
Background Reconstructing the higher relationships of pulmonate gastropods has been difficult. The use of morphology is problematic due to high homoplasy. Molecular studies have suffered from low taxon sampling. Forty-eight complete mitochondrial genomes are available for gastropods, ten of which are pulmonates. Here are presented the new complete mitochondrial genomes of the ten following species of pulmonates: Salinator rhamphidia (Amphiboloidea); Auriculinella bidentata, Myosotella myosotis, Ovatella vulcani , and Pedipes pedipes (Ellobiidae); Peronia peronii (Onchidiidae); Siphonaria gigas (Siphonariidae); Succinea putris (Stylommatophora); Trimusculus reticulatus (Trimusculidae); and Rhopalocaulis grandidieri (Veronicellidae). Also, 94 new pulmonate-specific primers across the entire mitochondrial genome are provided, which were designed for amplifying entire mitochondrial genomes through short reactions and closing gaps after shotgun sequencing. Results The structural features of the 10 new mitochondrial genomes are provided. All genomes share similar gene orders. Phylogenetic analyses were performed including the 10 new genomes and 17 genomes from Genbank (outgroups, opisthobranchs, and other pulmonates). Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses, based on the concatenated amino-acid sequences of the 13 protein-coding genes, produced the same topology. The pulmonates are paraphyletic and basal to the opisthobranchs that are monophyletic at the tip of the tree. Siphonaria , traditionally regarded as a basal pulmonate, is nested within opisthobranchs. Pyramidella , traditionally regarded as a basal (non-euthyneuran) heterobranch, is nested within pulmonates. Several hypotheses are rejected, such as the Systellommatophora, Geophila, and Eupulmonata. The Ellobiidae is polyphyletic, but the false limpet Trimusculus reticulatus is closely related to some ellobiids. Conclusions Despite recent efforts for increasing the taxon sampling in euthyneuran (opisthobranchs and pulmonates) molecular phylogenies, several of the deeper nodes are still uncertain, because of low support values as well as some incongruence between analyses based on complete mitochondrial genomes and those based on individual genes (18S, 28S, 16S, CO1). Additional complete genomes are needed for pulmonates (especially for Williamia, Otina , and Smeagol ), as well as basal heterobranchs closely related to euthyneurans. Increasing the number of markers for gastropod (and more broadly mollusk) phylogenetics also is necessary in order to resolve some of the deeper nodes -although clearly not an easy task. Step by step, however, new relationships are being unveiled, such as the close relationships between the false limpet Trimusculus and ellobiids, the nesting of pyramidelloids within pulmonates, and the close relationships of Siphonaria to sacoglossan opisthobranchs. The additional genomes presented here show that some species share an identical mitochondrial gene order due to convergence.

The NIKA2 Instrument at 30-m IRAM Telescope: Performance and Results
The New IRAM KID Arrays 2 (NIKA2) consortium has just finished installing and commissioning a millimetre camera on the IRAM 30-m telescope. It is a dual-band camera operating with three frequency-multiplexed kilo-pixels arrays of lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKID) cooled at 150 mK, designed to observe the intensity and polarisation of the sky at 260 and 150 GHz (1.15 and 2 mm). NIKA2 is today an IRAM resident instrument for millimetre astronomy, such as intracluster medium from intermediate to distant clusters and so for the follow-up of Planck satellite detected clusters, high redshift sources and quasars, early stages of star formation and nearby galaxies emission. We present an overview of the instrument performance as it has been evaluated at the end of the commissioning phase.
IAS/CEA Evolution of Dust in Nearby Galaxies (ICED): The spatially-resolved dust properties of NGC4254
We present the first preliminary results of the project ICED , focusing on the face-on galaxy NGC4254. We use the millimetre maps observed with NIKA2 at lRAM-30m. as part of the IMEGIN Guaranteed Time Large Program. and of a wide collection of ancillary data (multi-wavelength photometry and gas phase spectral lines) that are publicly available. We derive the global and local properties of interstellar dust grains through infrared-to-radio spectral energy distribution fitting, using the hierarchical Bayesian code HerBIE. which includes the grain properties of the state-of-the-art dust model. THEMIS. Our method allows us to get the following dust parameters: dust mass, average interstellar radiation field, and fraction of small grains. Also, it is effective in retrieving the intrinsic correlations between dust parameters and interstellar medium properties. We find an evident anti-correlation between the interstellar radiation field and the fraction of small grains in the centre of NGC4254. meaning that, at strong radiation field intensities, very small amorphous carbon grains are efficiently destroyed by the ultra-violet photons coming from newly formed stars, through photo-desorption and sublimation. We observe a flattening of the anti-correlation at larger radial distances, which may be driven by the steep metallicity gradient measured in NGC4254.
