The 5-M Downsizing Communication Model for Survivor-Employee Engagement
2024
The global economic crisis has led to downsizing, creating survivor-employees and affecting employee-engagement. This study aimed to assess the relationship between banks’ internal communication strategies and their survivor-employee engagement. The research involved in-depth interviews and descriptive design, focusing on 15 commercial banks in Nigeria. The findings revealed that downsizing is prevalent in the industry, with no protection from Nigerian labour laws. The downsizing-communication from top management to survivor-employees is minimal, leading to survivor syndrome and declining employee-engagement. The study created and proposed the 5M-model for downsizing communication and employee engagement. The 5M-model framework connotes Mobilisation, Management, Motivate, Monitor and Measure. However, the 5M-model for downsizing-communication and employee-engagement amplifies the media richness theory, integrates employee-engagement theory and caters for downsizing communication phenomena, a new solution-dimension for optimal employee-organisation relationship. The 5M model communication gradient transits from green to yellow indicating efficacy of communication, the capacity to convey meaning between sender and receiver, record reactions and get immediate feedback. This novel model is a template to improve survivor-employee engagement and employee-organization relationships.

Evaluating The Role Of The Media In Communicating Terrorist Activities And Hostage Negotiation In Africa: Users’ Perspectives
2023
Terrorism is one of Africa’s greatest security threats, with Somalia, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali & Niger in the top 10 most impacted globally. It has become more transactional, with terrorists making demands at the expense of hostages. The UN and African Union have counter-terrorism pillars, but terrorism is still thriving. This study assesses the role of the media in communicating terrorist activities and hostage negotiation. This study surveyed 137 Africans in 17 countries and found that international media are more prominent than African media channels in broadcasting terrorist activities in Africa. Hypothesis analysis indicate that there is no association between age range and awareness variables, but there is an association between individuals age group and their awareness of terrorism and hostage negotiations. The media’s role in communicating terrorist activities and hostage negotiation in Africa is purely informative, requires collaboration with the government and has no significant impact. Finally, the media still controls the rhetoric and narratives on terrorism communication and require collaboration with the government on counter-terrorism activities. The findings of this study are significant for terrorism crisis communication, counter-terrorism policies and strategic communication for governments, the UN and international humanitarian agencies. It is the responsibility of the media to cover terrorism in an ethical, responsible, and considerate manner, to assist in educating the public and contributes to a society that is safer and more tranquil.

Social Media for Crisis Communication in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak: A Study of NCDC
2021
Several scholars have studied social media use for crisis communication. However, few studies have been carried out to investigate social media deployment during a public health crisis, such as the Coronavirus outbreak. This study accessed public awareness and engagement of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)s social media use for crisis communications during the Coronavirus outbreak in Nigeria. It also assessed the influence of communication towards public positive behavioural adjustments. The study data was gathered via a survey of 400 citizens and Facebook users and analysed using excel and SPSS. The study found public awareness of the NCDC social media communications during the outbreak; there was also a public behavioural adjustment to NCDCs recommended preventive behaviours. However, there was a low engagement in NCDCs crisis communication via Facebook. The study reveals a high level of public uncertainty about NCDC Facebook communications and a change in public opinion about the Coronavirus. This study concludes that this situation could result from competing information about the Coronavirus on social media during the COVID outbreak and recommended further studies in this area. Findings are helpful for health communication policy reviews, strategic crisis communication assessments, appraisal of similar agencies, and further research.

Influence of Media Globalization on Denigration of National Values in African Children
2020
Media globalization has eased the availability of entertainment for African Children, particularly via cable-TV. Considering the power of media as socialization agent, this research appraised proliferation of children shows on DsTv/GoTv via the lens of African cultural particulars, particularly respect for elders and authoritative parenting. Using media content analysis methodology and discourse analysis, findings link globalmedia influence as the mechanism for the denigration of African values in children, with Social cognitive theory framing the implications. Recommendations are stronger national broadcast regulations for reinforcement offamily values via television to preserve the identity of society, providing local content for global export and contributing to glocal media content.

Social constructionism and the effects of media's portrayal of Nigeria's economic recession on foreign direct investment
2021
Although Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa, it has been bedeviled by various issues in recent times, which has led to its experience of an economic recession. Its over-dependence on foreign products, the activities of militants and pipeline vandals in the Niger-Delta, poor economic planning and the delayed budget signing are some of the issues that have being credited to the fall into recession. However, some economists have suggested that Nigeria’s economy has the potential to rise from the recession and have identified the inflow of foreign direct investments as one of the key factors that will contribute to the rise. On the other hand, the media’s reporting of Nigeria’s recession seems to have caused mixed reactions from among the public who worry about their daily bread. Potential investors, both local and foreign, are also not left out in the expression of uncertainty. Since they rely on the media to provide information on the situation of the Nigerian economy, the power of the media in the making or marring of the government’s encouragement of FDI to boost the economy cannot be underestimated. The power of the media, which appears to be able to determine or construct the position and perception of individuals/organisation follow it can be relat-ed to the theory of social constructionism. So-cial constructionism suggests that the media’s have the capacity to selectively reproduce and construct the reality of any situation – in this case, Nigeria’s recession. However, it also acknowledges that the meanings offered by the media can be negotiated or rejected by those to whom it is directed. This study explores the capacity of the media’s construction of Nigeria’s economic recession to influence the inflow of foreign direct investments.
