Surface Reading: An Introduction
In the text-based disciplines, psychoanalysis and Marxism have had a major influence on how we read, and this has been expressed most consistently in the practice of symptomatic reading, a mode of interpretation that assumes that a text's truest meaning lies in what it does not say, describes textual surfaces as superfluous, and seeks to unmask hidden meanings. For symptomatic readers, texts possess meanings that are veiled, latent, all but absent if it were not for their irrepressible and recurring symptoms. Noting the recent trend away from ideological demystification, this essay proposes various modes of \"surface reading\" that together strive to accurately depict the truth to which a text bears witness. Surface reading broadens the scope of critique to include the kinds of interpretive activity that seek to understand the complexity of literary surfaces---surfaces that have been rendered invisible by symptomatic reading.
Genome-wide association study of intraocular pressure uncovers new pathways to glaucoma
Intraocular pressure (IOP) is currently the sole modifiable risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide 1 . Both IOP and POAG are highly heritable 2 . We report a combined analysis of participants from the UK Biobank ( n  = 103,914) and previously published data from the International Glaucoma Genetic Consortium ( n  = 29,578) 3 , 4 that identified 101 statistically independent genome-wide-significant SNPs for IOP, 85 of which have not been previously reported 4 – 12 . We examined these SNPs in 11,018 glaucoma cases and 126,069 controls, and 53 SNPs showed evidence of association. Gene-based tests implicated an additional 22 independent genes associated with IOP. We derived an allele score based on the IOP loci and loci influencing optic nerve head morphology. In 1,734 people with advanced glaucoma and 2,938 controls, participants in the top decile of the allele score were at increased risk (odds ratio (OR) = 5.6; 95% confidence interval (CI): 4.1–7.6) of glaucoma relative to the bottom decile. A combined analysis of participants from the UK Biobank and the International Glaucoma Genetic Consortium identifies 85 new loci for intraocular pressure (IOP). Pathway analysis uncovers new pathways associated with both IOP and glaucoma.
Nanostructure and dynamics of N-truncated copper amyloid-β peptides from advanced X-ray absorption fine structure
An X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) electrochemical cell was used to collect high-quality XAS measurements of N-truncated Cu:amyloid-β (Cu:Aβ) samples under near-physiological conditions. N-truncated Cu:Aβ peptide complexes contribute to oxidative stress and neurotoxicity in Alzheimer's patients' brains. However, the redox properties of copper in different Aβ peptide sequences are inconsistent. Therefore, the geometry of binding sites for the copper binding in Aβ 4–8/12/16 was determined using novel advanced extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. This enables these peptides to perform redox cycles in a manner that might produce toxicity in human brains. Fluorescence XAS measurements were corrected for systematic errors including defective-pixel data, monochromator glitches and dispersion of pixel spectra. Experimental uncertainties at each data point were measured explicitly from the point-wise variance of corrected pixel measurements. The copper-binding environments of Aβ 4–8/12/16 were precisely determined by fitting XAS measurements with propagated experimental uncertainties, advanced analysis and hypothesis testing, providing a mechanism to pursue many similarly complex questions in bioscience. The low-temperature XAS measurements here determine that Cu II is bound to the first amino acids in the high-affinity amino-terminal copper and nickel (ATCUN) binding motif with an oxygen in a tetragonal pyramid geometry in the Aβ 4–8/12/16 peptides. Room-temperature XAS electrochemical-cell measurements observe metal reduction in the Aβ 4–16 peptide. Robust investigations of XAS provide structural details of Cu II binding with a very different bis -His motif and a water oxygen in a quasi-tetrahedral geometry. Oxidized XAS measurements of Aβ 4–12/16 imply that both Cu II and Cu III are accommodated in an ATCUN-like binding site. Hypotheses for these Cu I , Cu II and Cu III geometries were proven and disproven using the novel data and statistical analysis including F tests. Structural parameters were determined with an accuracy some tenfold better than literature claims of past work. A new protocol was also developed using EXAFS data analysis for monitoring radiation damage. This gives a template for advanced analysis of complex biosystems.
CLASSICAL DIFFUSION
At Howard University, the only historically Black university in the United States with a Classics department, campus leaders decided in 2021 to eliminate that department after a three-year review of its academic programs. The response was vehement and swift, with students, faculty, and alumni condemning the decision as a case of administrative overreach. The philosopher Cornel West described the divestment from the Classics curriculum as a ‘spiritual catastrophe’ for the institution. Few missed the irony that Toni Morrison, one of Howard's most celebrated alumni, studied with Frank Snowden, Jr., a renowned professor of Classics, and received a ‘minor’ in that field as an undergraduate; or that the central inspiration for Morrison's Beloved was a fugitive slave woman named Margaret Garner who became known as ‘the modern Medea’ for having decided (in 1856, in flight from her master's agents) that it was better to kill her children than see them returned to enslavement in the American South. Others would point to the long tradition of transformational Black thinkers who admit to having been inspired by the classics, including Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King, Jr.
\La Foi Postcritique\, on Second Thought
How strongly I have felt of pictures, that when you have seen one well, you must take your leave of it; you shall never see it again. (Emerson 476) Now and then there are readings that make the hairs on the neck, the non-existent pelt, stand on end and tremble, when every word burns and shines hard and clear and infinite and exact … readings when the knowledge that we shall know the writing differently or better or satisfactorily, runs ahead of any capacity to say what we know, or how. In these readings, a sense that the text has appeared to be wholly new, never before seen, is followed, almost immediately, by the sense that it was always there , that we, the readers, knew it was always there, and have always known it was as it was, though we have now for the first time recognized, become fully cognizant of, our knowledge. (Byatt 512) Literary criticism thrives on the distinction between first and second reading, on what is often parsed as absorptive reading versus critical reading, belletristic versus analytic reading. It sets itself against the idea that a irst reading of a text might be the one in which we have “seen [it] well”-on the assumption that critical insight is belated (Emerson 476). “As scholars, we read lengthy texts [such as novels] sequentially; then, in order to write, we inevitably reread recursively,” which has the efect, as the critic Michaela Bronstein goes on to observe, of producing conlicted conceptions of the novel as either “a static object (a form) or an experience in time” (77). One goal of literary criticism would appear to be to keep readers from lingering in that temporal and immersive irst reading in order to arrive at an assessment of the total work. First reading and critique are viewed as largely anathema; second thoughts inspire us to relinquish irst impressions, in a process of questioning and revision infused with a spirit of skepticism and doubt. here is an air of supersession- something vanguardist-about critique, but as Bronstein also points out, “the purpose of rereading need not be to revise the irst reading from an analytic distance. . . . Close reading [can use] the recursive process of analysis to approach, rather than to erase, sequential reading” (78). I take Bronstein's projection of a literary criticism that accounts for rather than dismisses the absorptive aspects of irst reading as an accurate description of Rita Felski's project in The Limits of Critique , a manifesto that calls on literature scholars to recommit to “care or concern for [aesthetic] phenomena” (107). Felski makes the case for a pragmatist phenomenology and calls her method for its achievement “postcritique,” a mode of reading that declines to unmask, demystify, interrogate, subvert, or expose the literary text (the habit of generations of recent critics). Postcritique means to expand the uses of literature beyond that of marking an absence or an insufficiency, returning readers to the values that drew them to the literary work of art in the first place (“aesthetic pleasure, increased selfunderstanding, moral relection, perceptual reinvigoration, ecstatic self- loss, emotional consolation, or heightened sensation” [188]).
Electronic Communication between Dithiolato-Bridged Diiron Carbonyl and S-Bridged Redox-Active Centres
The catalytic potential of linked redox centres is exemplified by the catalytic site of [FeFe]-hydrogenases, which feature a diiron subsite linked by a cysteinyl S atom to a 4Fe4S cube. The investigation of systems possessing similarly-linked redox sites is important because it provides a context for understanding the biological system and the rational design of abiological catalysts. The structural, electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of Fe2(CO)5(CH3C(CH2S)2CH2SPhNO2, I-bzNO2 and the aniline analogue, I-bzNH2, are described and IR spectroelectrochemical studies have allowed investigation of the reduction products and their reactions with CO and protons. These measurements have allowed identification of the nitrobenzenyl radical anion, quantification of the shifts of the (CO) bands on ligand-based reduction compared with NO2/NH2 exchange and protonation of the pendent ligand. The strength of thioether coordination is related to the electronic effects, where competitive binding studies with CO show that CO/thioether exchange can be initiated by redox processes of the pendent ligand. Stoichiometric multi electron/proton transfer reactions of I-bzNO2 localised on nitrobenzene reductions occur at mild potentials and a metal-centred reduction in the presence of protons does not lead to significant electrocatalytic proton reduction.
Building a Better Description
Universally practiced across the disciplines, description is also consistently devalued or overlooked. In this introduction to the special issue “Description Across Disciplines,” Sharon Marcus, Heather Love, and Stephen Best propose that description is a critical practice more complex (and less contradictory) than its detractors have taken it to be. They argue that turning critical attention toward description’s nuances gives us access to the ways that scholars conventionally assign and withhold value and prestige. The authors set forth a number of principles (using their contributors’ essays as a guide) toward the end of “building a better description.”
A Heteroaromatically Functionalized Hexamolybdate
A new heteroaromatic thiophene containing organoimido functionalized hexamolybdate has been synthesized and characterized in both solid form and solution. Structural analysis shows successful introduction of the organoimido ligand through replacement of one terminal oxo site on [Mo6O19]2− to yield the singly functionalized hexamolybdate. Spectroscopic and theoretical analysis indicates charge transfer between the inorganic and organic components, with a significantly red-shifted lowest lying transition of 399 nm vs. the parent Lindqvist ion of 325 nm. Additional characterization includes, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared (IR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) studies.
