Applications of regenerated bacterial cellulose: a review
Whilst synthetic polymers have changed the world in many important ways, the negative impacts associated with these materials are becoming apparent in waste accumulation and microplastic pollution due to lack of biodegradability. Society has become aware of the need to replace or substitute environmentally persistent synthetic polymers, and cellulose has received a large amount of attention in this respect. The mechanical properties of cellulose, its renewable nature and biodegradability are advantageous properties. Drawbacks exist for the use of plant cellulose (PC), including the water footprint of cotton, deforestation associated with wood/dissolving pulp, and the extensive processing required to refine plants and wood into pure cellulose. Bacterial cellulose (BC), also known as microbial cellulose, is gaining momentum in both academic and industry settings as a potential solution to the many drawbacks of plant-based cellulose. Compared to PC, BC has high purity, crystallinity and degree of polymerisation, and can be manufactured from waste in a way that yields more cellulose per hectare, per annum, and requires less intense chemical processing. Native bacterial cellulose can be formed and shaped to an extent and is found in a variety of commercial products. However, dissolving and regenerating bacterial cellulose is a potential avenue to broaden the applications available to this material. The aim of this study is to review the applications which utilize regenerated bacterial cellulose, with a focus on the dissolution/regeneration methods used and discussing the associated limitations and future outlook.
Assessing the Gains from E-Commerce
E-commerce represents a rapidly growing share of consumer spending in the United States. We use transactions-level data on credit and debit cards from Visa, Inc. between 2007 and 2017 to quantify the resulting consumer surplus. We estimate e-commerce reached 8 percent of consumption by 2017, yielding the equivalent of a 1 percent boost to their consumption, or over $1,000 per household per year. While some of the gains arose from avoiding travel costs to local merchants, most of the gains stemmed from substituting to merchants available online but not locally. Higher income consumers gained more, as did consumers in more densely populated counties.
The synthesis of a carbohydrate-like dihydrooxazine and tetrahydrooxazine as putative inhibitors of glycoside hydrolases: A direct synthesis of isofagomine
The treatment of benzyl 2,3-O-isopropylidene- - L -xylopyranoside with N-hydroxyphthalimide under Mitsunobu conditions, followed by protecting-group interchange, gave benzyl 4-O-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]-2,3- O-isopropylidene- - D -arabinoside. Mild acid hydrolysis and catalytic hydrogenolysis afforded 4-O-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]- D -arabinose that, upon heating in water, gave the dihydrooxazine [(4R,5S,6R)-5,6-dihydro-4,5-dihydroxy-6-hydroxymethyl-4H-1,2-oxazine] as a crystalline solid. A single-crystal structure determination of this solid showed it to exist in the 5 H 6 conformation. Reduction of the dihydrooxazine gave the tetrahydrooxazine [(4R,5S,6R)-4,5-dihydroxy-6-hydroxymethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2H-1,2-oxazine]. The dihydrooxazine was an effective inhibitor of two -glucosidases (K i = 27 and 35 µM). Benzyl 2,3-O-isopropylidene- - L -xylopyranoside, via the derived imidazylate, was converted into a nitrile that, upon reduction and protecting-group manipulations, gave benzyl 4-C-aminomethyl-4-deoxy- - D -arabinoside. Treatment of this amine with hydrogen and palladium-on-carbon gave isofagomine.Key words: dihydrooxazine, tetrahydrooxazine, isofagomine, iminosugars, glycosidase inhibitors.
