Joe Fortin's Casa Verde Custom Homes uses straw bales and concrete in its construction. A foremost goal for Casa Verde is to build environmentally friendly and energy-efficient homes. The company has built about 20 homes so far, with five of those being straw bale homes. The non-straw homes were built with optimum value engineering, a technique that aims to conserve framing lumber and stick-built homes. Under the building code, Casa Verde is not allowed to consider any structural integrity the straw may add to the overall building. However, Fortin believes the straw does add some strength.
