Paleoparasitology, the study of parasites in the past, brings the knowledge of where and when they occurred in preterit populations. Some groups of parasites, as capillariids, have a complex and controversial systematic, hindering the paleoparasitological diagnosis. In this article, we synthesized the occurrence of capillariids in both the New and the Old World in ancient times, and discussed the difficulty of the diagnosis of species and the strategies for identification. The present review also shows the current status of the phylogeny in capillariids and indicates the necessity to try new approaches for a better understanding of capillariid paleodistribution.
For the systematic review, a predefined guideline defined by PRISMA was used. The articles collected were identified, screened, and included in the review following criteria for eligibility. The current status of the phylogeny of capillariids was accessed using MUSCLE, Bioedit v.7.0.5 and MEGA v. 7.0.21 programs.
The review discussed 38 articles that presented information about capillariids in past populations. Most of capillariid eggs found in the New and Old World were not identified. However, Calodium hepaticum eggs were the most identified, as some from Eucoleus genus. It was observed that sites from the New World had a better chance for capillariid egg identification, due to previous knowledge of its host, when compared to the Old World. In the 18S rDNA phylogenetic analyses, two datasets were constructed, one including sequences from 7 Moravec's genera, where 3 genus-specific clusters, with high bootstrap values, could be observed for Capillaria (ML = 99%, NJ = 96%), Eucoleus (ML / NJ = 100%) and Paratrichosoma (ML / NJ = 100%). A fourth cluster of 18S rDNA dataset I revealed lack of definition of Pearsonema and Aonchotheca genera. The 18S rDNA dataset II comprised 8 Moravec's genera and defined 3 clusters, 2 genus-specific for Eucoleus (ML = 99%, NJ = 100%) and Capillaria (ML / NJ = 98%). The third 18S rDNA dataset II cluster included 6 genera and exhibited, once again, Pearsonema and Aonchotheca poor discrimination. The cox1 gene data consist of 4 Moravec's genera, and in spite of grouping some species-specific clusters, did not show genera-specific definition.
Despite the numerous archaeological findings, both in the New and the Old Worlds, the identification of capillariid species based on the morphology and morphometry of eggs remains imprecise, often resulting in a generic diagnosis of a group or morphotype of capillariid. Capillariid is one of the most diverse group of helminths recovered in archaeological sites. The phylogenetic trees produced in this study showed limited genetic information available, unresolved genera and incongruence with the classical taxonomy. The elucidation of the paleodistribution of capillariids can give insights of the ancient host-parasite associations but also in modern sceneries.

Capillariid diversity in archaeological material from the New and the Old World: clustering and artificial intelligence approaches

Background
Capillariid nematode eggs have been reported in archaeological material in both the New and the Old World, mainly in Europe and South America. They have been found in various types of samples, as coprolites, sediments from latrines, pits, or burial. Modern parasitological records show that around 300 species of capillariids have been described in all vertebrate taxa, including humans, making it a very diversified group. The main proposal of this work is to characterize and identify capillariid eggs found in archaeological sites from Europe and Brazil.
Methods
A total of 39 samples of archeological sites from Europe, deposited in the paleoparasitological collection of the University Marie & Louis Pasteur, Besançon, France was analyzed. In addition, 80 coprolites from the pre-Colombian archaeological site
Gruta do Gentio II
, Brazil, deposited in the Paleogenetic Laboratory at Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Rio de Janeiro, were evaluated. Samples were treated according to the protocols of each laboratory and then analyzed under light microscopy. Capillariid eggs were classified according to length, width, plugs, and eggshell sizes, and statistical analysis of the morphometric dataset was performed. Using a reference dataset of specimens provided by both Institutional Collections, three approaches to species identification were applied: discriminant analysis, hierarchical clustering, and artificial intelligence/machine learning.
Results
A total of 10 samples from Europe and 4 from Brazil were positive for capillariid eggs, showing 13 different morphotypes. As European samples were mainly collected from latrines and pits, parasite–host information was absent, and consequently, species identification was impaired. In contrast, the availability of host information rendered the identification of capillariid species for the Brazilian coprolites. The new methodology indicates capillariid species identified on various samples, resulting in the presence of
Capillaria exigua
(Dujardin, 1845) in feline coprolite,
Baruscapillaria resecta
(Dujardin, 1845) in opossum, and
Aonchotheca bovis
(Schnyder, 1906) in bovid, in the Brazilian site, while in European sites,
Capillaria venusta
(Freitas e Mendonça, 1958),
Aonchotheca myoxinitelae
(Diesing, 1851),
Eucoleus madjerdae
(Bernard, 1964), and
Baruscapillaria spiculata
(Freitas, 1933) were found.
Conclusions
The study provides new results by applying innovative methodologies for parasite identification and gaining insights into the past host (human or animal)/parasite relationships.

Background
There are more than 300 species of capillariids that parasitize various vertebrate groups worldwide. Species identification is hindered because of the few taxonomically informative structures available, making the task laborious and genus definition controversial. Thus, its taxonomy is one of the most complex among Nematoda. Eggs are the parasitic structures most viewed in coprological analysis in both modern and ancient samples; consequently, their presence is indicative of positive diagnosis for infection. The structure of the egg could play a role in genera or species discrimination. Institutional biological collections are taxonomic repositories of specimens described and strictly identified by systematics specialists.
Methods
The present work aims to characterize eggs of capillariid species deposited in institutional helminth collections and to process the morphological, morphometric and ecological data using machine learning (ML) as a new approach for taxonomic identification. Specimens of 28 species and 8 genera deposited at Coleção Helmintológica do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (CHIOC, IOC/FIOCRUZ/Brazil) and Collection de Nématodes Zooparasites du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris (MNHN/France) were examined under light microscopy. In the morphological and morphometric analyses (MM), the total length and width of eggs as well as plugs and shell thickness were considered. In addition, eggshell ornamentations and ecological parameters of the geographical location (GL) and host (H) were included.
Results
The performance of the logistic model tree (LMT) algorithm showed the highest values in all metrics compared with the other algorithms. Algorithm J48 produced the most reliable decision tree for species identification alongside REPTree. The Majority Voting algorithm showed high metric values, but the combined classifiers did not attenuate the errors revealed in each algorithm alone. The statistical evaluation of the dataset indicated a significant difference between trees, with GL + H + MM and MM only with the best scores.
Conclusions
The present research proposed a novel procedure for taxonomic species identification, integrating data from centenary biological collections and the logic of artificial intelligence techniques. This study will support future research on taxonomic identification and diagnosis of both modern and archaeological capillariids.

Discovery of a 240 million year old nematode parasite egg in a cynodont coprolite sheds light on the early origin of pinworms in vertebrates

BACKGROUND: We report the discovery of a nematode parasite egg (Nemata: Oxyurida) from a coprolite closely associated with the remains of several species of Cynodontia, dated to 240 million years old. This finding is particularly significant because this is the oldest record of an oxyurid nematode yet discovered, and because the cynodonts are considered a stem-group of the mammals. METHODS: We extracted material from a fully mineralized coprolite by both scraping the surface, and removing fragments from its interior with clean dental instruments used a single time. A single drop of glycerol from a new vial was added as a clearing reagent. Each slide was sealed with wax and examined with an optical microscope at 100× to 400× magnification. RESULTS: From one coprolite, 550 slides were examined; from 275 of these slides, sediment was examined that was scraped from the surface of the coprolite, and from the other 275 slides, material was examined that was extracted from the interior of the coprolite. All microscopic structures encountered were photographed, measured, and identified when possible. CONCLUSIONS: From the coprolite examined, we discovered an egg representing a new species of pinworm that, based on the egg structure, clearly places it in the family Heteroxynematidae. Nematodes of the order Oxyurida have very constrained life-histories, occurring only in animals that are not strictly carnivorous and also ingest large amounts of plant material. This fact enabled us to determine which species of cynodont, from several collected at the site in Brazil, are most likely the depositors of the coprolite, and therefore were the putative host of the parasite.

Parasitic otitis is an inflammatory process that can affect the external to internal cattle ear, causing discomfort in animals, impairing performance, and even leading to animal death. The infection was initially associated with nematodes of the Rhabditis genus in tropical and subtropical regions. Currently, the nematode species described as associated with bovine otitis are Metarhabditis costai, Metarhabditis freitasi, and, more recently, M. blumi. It is worth highlighting that there is still a lack of robust information regarding the morphological details, ultrastructural aspects, and molecular biology data of these species. The Metarhabditis genus is composed of seven species and two more have recently been added. The objective of this study is to update the morphological data using advanced microscopy techniques to emphasize and clarify the main morphological differences between three species of Metarhabditis currently associated with parasitic otitis. Samples of inflammatory exudate were collected from four adult female Gir cattle (Bos taurus indicus) on a farm in Itabira, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Specimens were analyzed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Two species, M. costai and M. freitasi, were morphologically identified, consistent with previous reports. Scanning electron microscopy revealed new structural characteristics of the nematode species involved in parasitic otitis compared with M. blumi obtained from the CGC Center. Significant differences were observed in the male posterior region, bursa, and tail. Molecular analysis was conducted to differentiate these three species, and it was observed that the species first associated with otitis formed distinct clusters compared to M. blumi. However, it is important to note that further studies are needed to genetically characterize species of the Metarhabditis genus.

Capillariidae is a group of nematode parasites of vertebrates with a complex taxonomy. The structure of the eggshell, which was indicated as the most important characteristic for identification of genus or species through eggs, is very diverse among genera. The visualization and characterization of eggshell by light microscopy (LM) are a challenging task since different planes of the egg surface are needed. Nevertheless, categories of eggshell ornamentation were proposed by LM: smooth, punctuated, reticulated type I, and reticulated type II. The present study aimed to characterize the eggshell structure of Capillariidae species, parasites of mammals and avians, deposited in a helminthological collection using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Institutional Biological Collections are taxonomic repositories of specimens described and strictly identified at the species level by systematics specialists. SEM eggshell images were obtained from 12 species belonging to 5 genera (Aonchotheca, Baruscapillaria, Capillaria, Echinocoleus, Eucoleus) and compared to their respective LM images. Eggshell patterns observed using SEM were associated categories of eggshell ornamentation previously proposed by LM images. The SEM data indicate that eggshell categories are not in agreement with capillariid genera or sites of infection. However, the study provides previously unknown SEM eggshell information from curated species, which contributes with a specific and supplementary taxonomic feature at the species level of Capillariidae.

Edible flora is one of the most relevant groups for the survival and food security of socioeconomically vulnerable communities in Brazil. We aimed to provide an overview of research advances in the country, record the known edible biodiversity, national consumption patterns across different communities (rural, traditional, and urban), and the geographic and ethnic distribution of the articles, while identifying gaps and possibilities for future studies. To this end, a literature review was conducted in the SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases for the indexing of ethnobiological research. Following detailed analyses, 163 articles were included in our database. The research was concentrated in the Northeast and North regions, primarily in rural communities. A total of 1,079 botanical species were cited (754 native, 325 exotic), with the most diverse families being Myrtaceae Juss., Arecaceae Bercht. & J. Presl., and Fabaceae Lindl. The chosen predictors (urbanity gradient, phytogeographic domains, and types of traditional communities) could not distinguish the analyzed groups according to their similarity in food diversity, although some detectable statistical differences exist, especially when considering the type of traditional community and native edible species. Gaps in Brazilian local and traditional ecological knowledge regarding species diversity for food security and its cultural relationship, in addition to the low scientific representation of traditional groups, influenced these results. Studies on the internal variability of edible species composition are important as they allow for an understanding of whether the characteristics that differentiate communities, regarding the richness of utilized edible species, are related to ethnic, cultural, and geographical delimitations and which groups overlap these barriers.

e-Nature Positive Emotions Photography Database (e-NatPOEM): affectively rated nature images promoting positive emotions

Affectively rated image databases have their main application in studies that require inducing distinct stimuli on subjects. Widespread databases are designed to cover a broad range of stimuli, from negative to positive (valence), and relaxed to excited (arousal). The availability of narrow domain databases, designed to cover and thoroughly analyze a few categories of images that induce a particular stimulus, is limited. We present a narrow domain affective database with positive images, named e-Nature Positive Emotions Photography Database (e-NatPOEM), consisting of 433 high-quality images produced by professional and amateur photographers. A total of 739 participants evaluated them using a web-based tool to input valence-arousal values and a single word describing the evoked feeling. Ratings per image ranged from 36 to 108, median: 57; first/third quartiles: 56/59. 84% of the images presented valence > middle of the scale and arousal < middle of the scale. Words describing the images were classified into semantical groups, being predominant: Peace/tranquility (39% of all words), Beauty (23%), and Positive states (15%). e-NatPOEM is free and publicly available, it is a valid resource for affective research, and presents the potential for clinical use to assist positive emotions promotion.
