Carbamate pesticides are a risk to human well-being, and pirimicarb is the most widely employed carbamate insecticide. This ongoing investigation aimed to reveal its toxicity on neurobehavioral and reproductive function. The study was carried out on male Wistar rats by assessment of behavioral changes via experiments, such as the forced swim test and the elevated plus maze; determination of oxidative stress (checking parameters such as catalase activity, etc.); measurement of cortisol and testosterone serum titers, and IL-1β levels in the plasma and brain; and evaluation of histopathological lesions that induced pirimicarb after 28 days of gavage, specifically in the brain and testis. Traces of pirimicarb were analyzed in tissue extracts using LCMS/MS. At the same time, the beneficial and protective effect of EamCE (Ephedra alata monjauzeana Crude Extract) were tested. The outcomes showed considerable anxiety and depressive status, with an evident increase in cortisol and IL-1β titers and an important decrease in oxidative enzymes and testosterone. Significant histological lesions were also recorded. In addition, the LCMS/MS analysis affirmed the accumulation of pirimicarb in organ tissue from rats force-fed with pirimicarb. Conversely, EamCE demonstrated outstanding potential as a preventive treatment, restoring cognitive and physical performance, boosting fertility, enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and preserving tissue integrity. We concluded that pirimicarb has critical deleterious impacts on health, affecting the neuroimmune-endocrine axis, and EamCE has a general euphoric and preventive effect.

This study represents the first investigation into the ultrasonic and microwave extraction of bioactive metabolites from Jania rubens (J. rubens) (red seaweed) and Sargassum. muticum (S. muticum) (brown seaweed), with a focus on their biological activities. The research compares ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) utilizing a hydromethanolic solvent to evaluate their effects on these seaweeds’ bioactive compounds and biological activities. The assessment included a series of antioxidant essays: DPPH, ABTS, phenanthroline, and total antioxidant capacity, followed by enzyme inhibition activities: alpha-amylase and urease. Results revealed significant proportions of phenolic compounds, ranging from 48.31 ± 0.32 to 74.42 ± 0.80 μg GAE/mg, depending on the extraction method. The extracts demonstrated a high antioxidant activity, with IC50 values ranging from 26.58 ± 0.39 to 87.55 ± 0.69 μg/mL. Notably, the MAE extract of S. muticum showed a value of 48.11 ± 2.75 μg/mL for alpha-amylase inhibition, which is strictly superior to the reference acarbose with an IC50 equal to 3431.01 μg/mL. UPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis identified 14 bioactive compounds. The proportion of riboflavin with MAE was 70.58% and 59.11% for J. rubens and S. muticum fractions, respectively. These findings underscore the critical influence of extraction technique selection on bioactive compounds’ yield and efficiency, highlighting the potential of algal biomass as a sustainable alternative in various applications.

Despite the challenging conditions in the pre-Saharan areas of Algeria, such as weak plant cover and a harsh climate, beekeeping is being developed and spread. In the present work, honey samples collected from ten locations in the El Oued region were examined during the spring of 2021. A melissopalynological analysis was carried out, followed by a floristic investigation. The 10 honey samples were also investigated for their physicochemical properties and antioxidant and antibacterial activity against five strains: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilus, Listeria innocua, and Micrococcus luteus. The floristic analysis found 65 species belonging to 33 botanical families, with a dominance of the Asteraceae family accounting for 18.461% of the total. The melissopalynological study revealed only one monofloral honey (Ziziphus lotus), whereas the nine others were multi-floral. The honey’s color changed from light to dark amber, and most tested honey was of high quality, fulfilling international criteria. The total phenol and flavonoid contents varied considerably amongst the various honey samples. Furthermore, LC-MS-MS phenolic profile analysis identified the presence of 20 chemicals, of which only three phenols were found in all honey types. Antioxidant capacity analyzed with FRAP test and antiradical activities against DPPH differed from one honey sample to another. Moreover, a significant correlation was recorded between the antioxidant activity, honey’s color, polyphenol, and flavonoid contents. The S. aureus strain was the most sensitive regarding honey antibacterial activity, while M. luteus and B. subtilis strains were only moderately sensitive.

Medicinal plants possess the potential to yield bioactive compounds that offer significant health benefits; positioning them as valuable and promising sources for the development of innovative pharmaceutical products. This study aims to comprehensively assess the in vitro and in vivo pharmacological effects of the aqueous extract of the plant Atractylis aristata (AEAA) as well as assessments of its phytochemical composition. UPLC‐ESI‐MS/MS analysis of AEAA revealed a variety of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. In antioxidant assays, AEAA demonstrated considerable activity, with IC50 values of 0.269±0.05 mg/mL for DPPH scavenging and 0.0376±0.003 mg/mL for hydrogen peroxide radical inhibition. AEAA exhibited strong anti‐inflammatory activity in vitro, with an IC50 value of 2.563 mg/mL in the BSA denaturation test. In vivo, AEAA reduced carrageenan‐induced paw edema by 56.51 %, in comparison to an 83.58 % reduction with Ibuprofen®. Antibacterial testing showed AEAA′s broad‐spectrum activity, with the highest inhibition against Bacillus subtilis (34 mm zone of inhibition). Additionally, AEAA induced significant sedative effects, reducing locomotor activity by 48.98 %. These findings underscore the diverse pharmacological potential in addressing oxidative stress, inflammation, microbial infections, and anxiety of A. aristata, which can be attributed to its rich phytochemical profile. This study evaluates the pharmacological properties of the aqueous extract of Atractylis aristata, focusing on its antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial, and sedative activities. Phytochemical analysis identifies bioactive compounds, while in vitro and in vivo tests demonstrate its therapeutic potential in addressing oxidative stress, inflammation, microbial infections, and anxiety, offering a promising natural remedy for various health conditions.

Many plants are well-known for their use in traditional medicine to treat diseases associated with inflammations and oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate a medicinal plant from the Saharan region of Algeria, Pituranthos chloranthus. Phytochemical analysis showed that it is rich in polyphenols (8.93 ± 0.736 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (0.78 ± 0.023 mg EQ/g). The treatment of hypoglycemic individuals with a P. chloranthus extract showed effectiveness when compared to control diabetic rats not treated with this extract. The latter showed a high average glucose at 3.11 ± 0.769 g/L when compared to the two treated rat groups, 0.8 ± 023 g/L and 0.54 ± 0.08 g/L when fed 500 and 250 mg/Kg body weight of P. chloranthus extract, respectively. The in vitro antioxidant evaluation, using the DPPH (IC50 = 0.156 ± 0.23 mg/mL) and FRAP (IC50 = 0.718 ± 0.09 mg/mL) tests and ratio to ascorbic acid 0.0037 ± 0.505 mg/mL showed an important antioxidant potential.

, reducing power, and phenanthroline assays was employed in order to measure the antioxidant activity of TpAE. The results showed that TpAE exhibited significant antioxidant activity, with the best performance of the phenanthroline method. In order to evaluate in vitro anti-inflammatory effect, the inhibition of albumin denaturation by TpAE was investigated. TpAE confers high potential anti-inflammatory activity with a percentage of inhibition very close to that of the reference diclofenac. Acute toxicity, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activities were performed in order to investigate in vivo biological activity of TpAE. Oral administration of TpAE at a single dose of 2000 mg/kg did not cause any symptoms of intoxication in all treated animals. On the other hand, the oral administration of TpAE at different concentrations inhibits the development of paw edema and produces significant inhibition in acetic acid-induced writhing test. Our study revealed that TpAE is not toxic but contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activity.

Emerging techniques in Agricultural Waste Valorization in Bioethanol production

Bioethanol is the only liquid fuel for gasoline engines that is renewable and immediately available since it is produced from vegetable raw material, also called biomass. Hence the name bioethanol refers originally to living plant, not to fossil fuel. It is produced by the transformation of biomass sugars by yeast which is responsible for the fermentation of production alcohol. The objective sought through this study is valuation of biomass that is possibly made for any product with low market value obtaining bioethanol which constitutes a product of high added value, for example the bio valuation of dates of poor quality called \" Degla Bayda \". Physicochemical analyzes were carried out from the dates mill and during its alcoholic fermentation. Identification and purity verification analyze were undertaken for bioethanol. The results obtained show that fermentation conditions obtained that gave the optimum bioethanol yield was chosen of 36.25% at temperature 32°C, pH 5.0, yeast ratio 1g and fermentation time of 48 hours and the quality of our product is conformed with international standards.

Phenolic Compounds Analysis and In Vitro Biological Activities of Aqueous Extract From Leaves of Paronychia Arabica Collected in South Algeria

The objective of this investigation was to assess the biological properties of the leaf's aqueous extract of Paronychia Arabica (PaAE), which is used in conventional medicine for therapeutic purposes of gastric ulcers and abdominal diseases. The content of phenolic and flavonoidic compounds was quantitatively estimated using colorimetric methods. The phenolic component profile was also evaluated using LC–MS/MS. The biological activities were then carried out, namely the antioxidant activity (DPPH test, β‐carotene bleaching and FRAP assays), the anti‐inflammatory impact, and the inhibitory effect of the α‐amylase enzyme was also examined. Lastly, antimicrobial activity against seven bacterial strains: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Micrococcus luteus; and one yeast: Candida albicans. The aqueous extract obtained by use of the decoction of leaves of P. arabica contains high levels of phenolics and flavonoids. Additionally, LC–MS–MS assessment of the phenolic profile revealed the existence of 16 chemical compounds and the major compounds are 35.9% cis‐p‐coumaric acid, 14.8% syringic acid, 9.61% sinapic acid, and 9.6% 8‐Hydroxyquinolin. The findings revealed that P. arabica extract has elevated antioxidant capacity in all tested samples; it also demonstrated a higher anti‐inflammatory activity. Antihyperglycemic activity is marked by a significant inhibitory effect on α‐amylase in vitro with an IC50 equal to 78.82 ± 3.4 μg/mL. Moreover, the Staphylococcus aureus strain had the highest sensitivity to P. arabica extract's antibacterial properties, whilst Micrococcus luteus and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains showed moderate sensitivity, and Escherichia coli displayed the greatest resistance. This study aimed to explore for the first time the in vivo and in vitro anti‐inflammatory, anti‐diabetic, and antimicrobial properties of Paronychia arabica. Positive correlation between the in vitro pharmacological activities that indicated the efficacy of P. arabica in α‐amylase inhibitory and denaturation of BSA. The phytochemical analysis revealed the simultaneous presence of Sinapic Acid and p‐coumaric acid in P. arabica. P. arabica extract is a promising alternative antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and anti‐inflammatory agent for the pharmaceutical industry.

Anacyclus pyrethrum extracts: examination of bioactive compounds and therapeutic implications through in vivo, in vitro, and in silico assays

Anacyclus pyrethrum, a native Algerian medicinal plant, demonstrates notable therapeutic efficacy. The bioactive profile of the Anacyclus pyrethrum extract was examined using HPLC-UV-VIS, which showed a high concentration of phenolic compounds (33.46 ± 0.57 mg EAG/g EP) and flavonoids (11.08 ± 0.24 mg E Qu/g EP). The Anacyclus pyrethrum extract exhibited significant antioxidant activity in iron chelation (IC50 = 0.019 ± 0.0006 mg/ml) DPPH (IC50 = 0.142± 0.001 mg/ml), ABTS+ (IC50 = 0.079 ± 0.0005 mg/ml) and OH (IC50 = 0.845 ± 0.052mg/ml) radicals. Anti-inflammatory investigations were conducted using both in vitro and in silico methods. The in vitro testing involved evaluating the denaturation of egg albumin and BSA, while the in silico tests focused on measuring the effect of caffeic acid on the COX-2 protein. The anti-inflammatory capacity of the substance was similar to that of Aspirin, with a value of 76.1 ± 1.04% compared to Aspirin’s 81.11 ± 1.6%. Our extract exhibited a fatal dose (LD50) of 45.847 ± 1.661 mg/ml and showed significant antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 2.5 to 27.5 mg/ml. The findings emphasize the wide range of medicinal uses of Anacyclus pyrethrum, underscoring its significance in both traditional and modern pharmacology.
