Handling \I Don't Care\ Attitudes
Says teacher A, \"The students simply do not care! They accept zeroes as though they were candy! They refuse to turn in homework assignments. In fact, they won't even complete the in-class assignments. Several of them sleep in class on a daily basis. They are going to be in for a big surprise when report cards go out, and I'm not bending on those grades at all. Maybe all those F's will wake them up and alert them to how serious this really is!\" (When report cards are finally issued, 48% of Teacher A's students receive failing grades.)
Dealing with Disrespectful Student Behaviors
It was the first day of school and in walked Albert Wilson. Albert was almost sixteen years old and in the seventh grade. Albert had an agenda: He would make certain that his teachers knew not to mess with him! He would soon be quitting school and had no intentions of doing anything until then, other than biding his time. The teachers were to simply leave him alone. Expecting anything from him would be a mistake on their parts. His intention was (should anyone forget this) to be a constant reminder of that fact.
Enjoying What You Do
FACT: If we enjoy what we do, we become better. If we do not enjoy what we do, we become bitter.
Teaching All Students at All Levels
THINGS TO CONSIDER: One of the things that makes teaching so difficult is the fact that we teach students, not textbooks and not grade levels. Each year, students come to us in all shapes, sizes, and colors, from all backgrounds, and yes, at all levels! Students are people, real people with unique abilities. And one of the things that makes the world \"go round\" is the fact that no two individuals are exactly alike. That's what makes teaching unlike any other profession! As teachers, we literally shape the future!
Dealing with Difficult Co-Workers
Mr. James was the consummate professional who had many years of experience dealing with \"at-risk\" students and had always managed to be extremely successful. He taught the most difficult groups of students, yet he seldom, if ever, had discipline problems. His students were successful (some for the first time in their lives). He had very high standards from which he seldom wavered. He believed in taking students from where they were and leading them toward where they needed to be. No excuses allowed. He made none for himself and accepted none from his students. He was highly respected by students, teachers, parents, and administrators. He was the kind of teacher that we all aspire to be.
